After 72 years this guy finally got his high school diploma

My great grandfather dropped out of school in 1943 to serve in the Navy during WWII. After his release, he decided to join the reserves and did not have the chance to go back to school. Thanks to my aunt, uncle and the local school board, my grandpa was finally able to get his degree! I think that smile on his face says it all.

Here's the video of him finding out about it; a lot of teachers told us they're going to plan lessons around this video and how education truly is a privilege. I'm just happy we were able to make one of his dreams come true.

Congrats grad!

see mom I've got time

Did he have to take a standardized state test or was he grandfathered in?

He looks so proud! As we all are of him as well! Wonderful

Plot twist: He's just won a football scholarship to a great university. He's a minority 'coz there aren't many 72 yo's in the NFL.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

LOL - he's 89! He was supposed to graduated high school 72 years ago. Does that mean a bigger scholarship?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oops, with my logic he must have been one bad-ass embryo. Better than Chuck Norris in WWII.

I never technically got my diploma. I didn't go to graduation and they never mailed mine home. I'm in a constant state of fear that 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 I never actually graduated and they'll just tell me my college degree is void.

Fun fact, the VA will literally give any ww2, korean and nam vets a high school diploma if they didnt get one.

Yes! That's how he got his

I got some bad news though. I think his chance to use the GI bill expired.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Haha I'll have to break that news to him

The reserves are literally one weekend a month and one week a year. What the fuck has he been doing?!?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

He doesn't talk about it much, but I think he worked in a steel factory while in the reserves? At the time providing for his family was

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

More important than going back to high school

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought all he was doing was reserves and nothing else. But, yes providing for family is more important

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh no, all he talks about is his time served and the reserves. I had to find out from my great aunt that he was a steel worker.
