If#20 didn't get you first

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

#1 Whilst you all dwell in 1963, I fathom myself in the year of our Lord 2011!

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

#1 seems like a concept module. No idea how they could miniaturize a CRT that small in 63, especially after looking at #20.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

'Old' inventions, gotta love em..

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

#13 is the IT from South Park, without the, umm, rear component.

8 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 1

Without the steering completely.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They were also in Men In Black III.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Damn, imgur. OP mislabeled so many things. #2 were training aids (think life vests for beginner swimmers). Then there's like 11 more wrong.

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

Yeah, they don't make you swim faster. They were supposed to help you not drown.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Well typically you are not going to swim very fast while drowning.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

“Swimming” aids. Riiiight.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What a terrifying time to be alive when you had to have a "Gas Proof Stroller".

8 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

Agreed. That's one of the most chilling photos I've ever seen.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And it's such a stark, ironic contrast to the personal gassing device in the previous picture (#3)

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

if you look more into it, theres lots of photos of various things like this from both WWI & II that look crazy AF but at the time made sense

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well, Britain was on the brink of war with Germany, and they were partial to weaponized chlorine gas the last time around....

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#13 is not impressed

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I love the absurd steampunky aesthetic to some of these.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Things like this are where that aesthetic came from.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Of course. And I think they look kind of nifty.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think the term is Zeerust (tv tropes warning) http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Zeerust

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

PS: Closely related to retrofuturism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retrofuturism

#3 looks like a good way to die quick

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

#20 Yeah...portable.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And four years after the one in #1, no less!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Walter Pichler was not an inventor but an artist. It's just art.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Walk, stop walking a bit too suddenly, break neck. Genius.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#9 Those roller skates look pretty interesting. Looks like they were trying to work walking in a normal way

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That's the one that got me thinking of these as things you'd get for Christmas and never think of again past that January.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can't help but wonder if there's actually a drive mechanism, so that when you step down on them it accelerates the rear wheel.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That was my thought too

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#22 that tracked motorcycle is kinda beast

8 years ago | Likes 213 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And Fox Mulder riding it!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's not a motorcycle. It's a baby tank.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Kinda looks like luke wilson riding it

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We should get one onto The Grand Tour.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but I can't figure out how it turns...

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Countersteering

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Thank You! Seems people don’t stop to ask how you steer a normal motorcycle, anyway.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well because last I checked the front wheel of motorbikes tend to turn, the front half of the tracks on this can't exactly do that...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That only makes it easy to lean the bike - to actually make a turn you keep the handles straight and lean. Weird, but true.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It doesn't have to!

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Things get out of your way

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

What better way to kill yourself than by smoking a pack at a time.

8 years ago | Likes 77 Dislikes 2

To my recollection cigarettes didn't have nearly as much additives back then?

You might go bankrupt before the ciggs can kill you.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Was considered healthy back in those days. Some even physician tested and approved. Everything's healthy until it gives you the cancer!

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

What about getting stabbed

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Many viruses cannot survive in an oxygen rich environment, so stabbing in a few air vents is so super healthy! Until the cancer sets in.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Airs the body.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

#12 isn't a grenade launcher. It's a gun with a curved barrel that allows for the shooter to shoot without being exposed to gunfire.

8 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 17

Was done for tank crews at the eastern front, as certain tanks didn't have machine guns

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is, the grenade slips over the barrel and has a baffle which "catches" the bullet. It uses the impact to launch off if the barrel.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ah yes this 1/2" wood table will protect me.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If you are not seen it will protect you though.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Must be good for short distances only, if it ever even worked.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

it was designed for tank use against hordes of soviet infantry, by ze Germans

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Rifle grenades work pretty well

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ooh I have been schooled

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yeah it looks nothing like a grenade launcher.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 8

The confusion is - The model of gun also came with an attachable grenade launcher, but the gun pictured does not have it attached.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

Yeah it didn't look like it. It looks like a suppressor on the end but I don't know anything about antique guns

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

I just resorted to google...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It has a 30mm rifle grenade launcher on the end of the barrel.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I still don't see it. That looks like a suppressor to me

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Its not a suppressor... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schiessbecher

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schiessbecher Your googlefu is weak!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did not attempt to google. Not pretending to know much about antique guns either

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Muzzle-loader launcher?
