Tried it. Works like a charm, but use CD cases (if you know what that is) and put transparent tape on as far up and lightly as possible.

DVD-Rs come in the same plastic cases. There is nothing remotely obscure about "CD case".

I used a box cutter. Once you've made enough of a dent, you can usually snap it right off. It did take me a few hours altogether though.
