Does anyone know what the red stamp in the middle is?

I heard the song in slow motion when I saw those frames for when pacman dies...

Imagine being someone that started in the games industry this early, seeing it grow so incredibly over a few decades

Back when Pac Man was a good boy

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like how he "hanko-ed" all his pages so that nobody could steal the idea.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Game design sure was a lot easier back then.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always updoot puckman.

I always liked the pattern on the bottom of the ghosts. Circle Square Circle.

Its nice to see his hand grew back.

That maze layout is different from the final game

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's weird how such legendary game started on a piece of paper

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 3

Most legendary things start on a piece of paper

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It was written with paper too. Things were coded with punch cards at this point.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

No, it was not. PacMan ran on a Z-80 processor (you could buy a MSX machine with the same CPU and use it in your home, with floppy disks)

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think Pac-Man used punch cards, though.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why not Hi Score 99999?

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

To give gainers something to shoot for.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gamers dammit.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Points come in increments of 10 I'm assuming.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That makes sense! Thanks!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Score was stored in 16bits maybe? Allows for a max of 65536 points. The extra 0 was to make players feel cooler (see other replies)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wonder what the stamp says

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pacu pacu

Its Mr.Iwatani's HANKO. Basically his signature, all Japanese have this.

This was back before you used a computer to build computer games.

10 years ago | Likes 316 Dislikes 16

Something tells me you have no idea how games are actually made.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Something tells me you have no idea how games were made in 1979 when PacMan was developed..

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Hell, we still sketch on paper now... It's called concept art.

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

No it wasn't, and sketching concept art and maps was a thing for a long, long time after Pac Man.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

is*

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wait, I'm confused. How did they make computer games then? Some guy would just draw the game on paper and it would magically become a game?

PacMan came out a year before the IBM PC. A CP/M machine might have been used for some development, but more likely a mini-computer.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I assume at that time PacMan was coded into assembler, or something else low level. Graphic were bit mapped, hence the graph paper.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup. Your point of confusion is the joke.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Should have 'design' rather than 'build' I guess.

10 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Should have said 'said' I guess.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Or 'wrote'... Or used a comma...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Going full meta: they made a game about the process https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8b/Pac-Pix_Coverart.png

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They had the means to code the game, but there was little/no design software, so graphics had to be created with directly with code.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Drawing them on graph paper would make it easier to do.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, what I was trying to say.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes. How else would it happen?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 10

It was about to be called Puck Man but someone noticed you could erase a part of the P...

10 years ago | Likes 118 Dislikes 6

The best part of that movie is any time michael cera's character is injured in any way.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You would think it was because he looks like a hockey puck, but it actually comes from the Japanese phrase paku-paku, which means to flap

10 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 2

IIRC in an interview, it was from the sound the Japanese use for eating...like "chomp" or something.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've heard a similar story explaining that "Jazz" replaced "Jass."

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually, the Japanese version *was* called Puck Man. They changed it when localizing the import version. This is the same reason why 1/

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

2/ you have "Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde" rather than "Oikake, Machibuse, Kimagure and Otoboke".

For the curious: Pacman there is "CANADIAN SYLLABICS CARRIER TTA" - that is, the sound "tta" as written by the Carrier people.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The ghost is "CANADIAN SYLLABICS CARRIER TTO" - that is, the sound "tto" from the same abugida.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Abugida (noun): Writing system where you write consonant+vowel pairs, and the vowel is a systematic modifier of the consonant.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Carrier uses rotation: ᗣ ᗤ ᗢ ᗧ is tto ttə ttu tta (and ᗥ ᗦ is tte tti). It's related to the other Canadian-native systems from the 1800s.
