King st station in Seattle did the reverse. They had sixtified the main hall, false acoustic tile ceiling, cover up the walls etc. a few years ago they completely restored it so now it looks wonderful, like your 'before' pic

I'd take any kind of workable passenger rail at this point...

Yeah, and there are still some really nice stations besides Chicago and New York. Denver is nice and downtown and Kansas City has a lot of really cool stuff around it.

That’s because they let that rail station rot for 60 years. It was an eyesore until it was bought by a tv station and remodeled, but not for rail passengers.
Same as Denver, all new and shiny, but not for Amtrak, wait for your train outside.
Omaha Amtrak station is an exact copy of many others, slapped up next to the original station that nobody wants to maintain anymore. Everybody loves to be nostalgic about these old buildings but nobody wants to pay to keep them.
