Ethereal looks and surreal scenes have glued many fantasy photography fans to their screens. Sadly, women of color are often left out from the fantasy genre altogether.
But one woman who goes by the Twitter handle “@btsanima” decided to redeem black women in fantastical set-ups. She thus started a Twitter thread with the caption “Black women in fantasy photography thread bc even though our presence is small, I will not be deterred.”
The woman behind this viral Twitter thread, who wished to stay anonymous, goes by the nickname Dee. “While I adore the classics (Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, etc.), the lack of faces that look like mine has always made me feel a little bit out of place,” Dee said. Some time ago, she discovered a pocket of Instagram that specialized in fantasy photography and found that there was a very small presence of black women."
Recently, Dee has been getting back into photography and noticed that many photographers had at least one photoshoot with a black woman. “All of them were beautiful and moving,” and Dee decided it was a collection that had to be shared with her followers.
Dee believes that the reason why there are so little black women in the fantasy genre comes down to “people believing that black women simply aren't interested.” For example, “If you check the pages of the models who were included in the thread, some of them do not usually do this genre.”
But as far as photography in general, Dee is convinced it is “an issue for the media industry as a whole.” Even though it has been improving over the years as more and more women of color have been making waves in the modeling industry, there’s still a long way to go.
It doesn’t mean there’s nothing to be done about it. “Simply expand your portfolio beyond the usual casting, and photograph black women as well,” Dee suggests.
She also said a photographer has to learn how to photograph dark skin. “Please. Even in high fashion photography, mistakes are being made because people do not bother to adapt to our skin.”
Every photographer in Dee’s thread showed that it can be done, so she urges photographers to do their research and simply make the effort. “I have to emphasize that it really isn’t a big step.”
After all, all artists should be open to learning new ways to improve and expand their range.
I know a lot of these would fall into the "Fashion shoot" rather than "Fantasy" category, but they are all so gorgeous.

Wow. These are pure works of art. If someone showed me a movie poster with any of these, I'd buy a ticket in a heartbeat.
Isaveimages
I'm glad to see more and more black people represented in alternative fashion, especially in goth culture.
FullTimeD
The one with the flowers in her hair, and the red in the braids, looking like Calypso.... Goddamn ?
RideTheStimutacs
There are sometimes women of color in fantasy, but they're usually the "Dragon Lady" mystical Asian stereotype.
kitamuramiike
Anybody who wants Afro-centric fantasy needs to read Black Leopard Red Wolf. It's absolutely incredible, and one of best novels of 2019.
getridofTheSeaword
And now some people are discovering a whole new fetish.

I'm a simple man. When I see hot women, I upvote them.

Awesome! 13 is my favorite

Some these are REALLY good. And some of them went way overboard on the touch-up effect for their face. It doesn’t need to be that smooth.
Disburden
Absolutely stunning

#7 I never noticed until now that most fantasy 'dark elves' don't use human colour pallets, this is a million times better
Abrausedteleprot
There is a whole genre called bown elves. Enjoy
reanbean
I love this so much and I hope a young, nerdy, black girl sees these and feels cool about liking fantasy. Representation is important.

People should read African Epics. They are a crazy good read, if you are into reading that stuff.

Oh my! They can have my Vibranium!

I am also loving the variety of different people of colour. /s
NoodlesWthADHD
But do they have pockets?
willCodeForUpvotes
Thank you for realistic fantasy outfits, as opposed to “how much skin can she show without losing the cloth ‘armor’”
willCodeForUpvotes
Except for like... one of them tho lol

If you have any more in a similar style Id love to see them!! +1. And +1 ♡

James C. Lewis did the Orisha deities that I think are pretty cool. http://www.noire3000studios.com/album/yorubaafricanorishas?p=1

This popped up on my FB feed. Went looking for more, but none like this. Maybe check the original post I linked and follow the photographer.

These are flat out, balls to the wall fantastic. Game of Thrones is not a classic, though. Fight me.
secretdpp
Well the novels are actually old enough to be counted as classics
schmonday
Age is not what determines a classic.
crapcomments
First book was published in 1996. Isn't that modern fiction?
secretdpp
20+ years is required for classic status
crapcomments
Guess it's a classic then! I'll put it on the shelf next to Charles Dickins
WookieWookieWookie
I was going to ask if a serious can be a classic when it's not even finished, but then I thought of wheel of time.
schmonday
Game of Thrones isn't a series. The series is A Song of Ice and Fire.
WookieWookieWookie
I just assume people are taking about the series and don't know the real name.
IAmDwightShrute
Wheel of Time and Malazan Book of the Fallen. More diversity I think in the latter.
TheRealFireFrenzy
I love the version of gender equality in TWOT, everyone thinks everyone else is stupid and it works
StormWinterwind
WOT is definitely a classic, but at the same time, fuck that noise. Have attempted twice; last time I gave up at book 9
PraiseTitties
After book 9. It gets better after Brandon Sanderson takes over and cleans up the wordy prose. The last book is in my top 10 favorites
TheRealFireFrenzy
Yeah i kinda wonder how much of the style changes in the last books are Sanderson's doing and how much is the inevitability that all the
TheRealFireFrenzy
characters eventually needed to end up more or less at the same place, which ofcourse makes it much easier to deal with in general
PraiseTitties
Except Wheel of time is finished?
WookieWookieWookie
I think WoT was considered a classic before Sanderson finished it.
TheRealFireFrenzy
And had a fully satisfying Ending?
PraiseTitties
At least I thought so?
TheRealFireFrenzy
That wasnt a question as in "i dont know the answer" that was a statement with a question mark on the end of it

I feel like a photographer who doesn't know how to photograph dark skin is just bad at their job.
UpvotingtheHotButton
Annie Liebovitz? Absolute garbage. She makes black women look like zombies. What an idiot!!!
ILikedTheirOldStuffBetter
She really creeped me out with those artsy photos she took of her deceased partner.
JustAFishServant
Wait, what!? Do you have a photo or link, by chance?

Eh... yes, but it’s also technology working against them. This is a great short watch: https://youtu.be/d16LNHIEJzs

Super interesting, thanks!

Not "bad", but perhaps not familiar with PoC skin. Lots of variables in photographing dark skin that cameras aren't able to manage
micheaBandit
It is not The camera it is The fotographer. I have seen what french and Africans can do.
spookyu
When I was young I was an amateur photographer, left it behind but I was taking some pictures on my phone with my girlfriend when we first
spookyu
got together and I was like "why the fuck is the white balance all fucky....ohhhhhhh" she is mixed race and I'm was white bread as they come
spookyu
had me laughing for a little bit, just a thing that never occured to me.
AfterTheRainComesTheRainbow
That's a bit harsh, though. Not everyone has been able to photograph models with dark skin
SideBoobsWillGetYouBanned
Yes. I have been taking pictures for years. I live in Sweden. 95% of my models are white and bright. It's not easy finding PoC to work with
Mardevac
It'd be helpful if they'd state that upfront, and let me make the decision to continue... Instead, I get pics where my skin has a green tint
AfterTheRainComesTheRainbow
Oh no :(
mugsyotoole
Isn’t that what separates good photographers from great? The ability to play with/interpret light & shadow even on “challenging” skin?
DonnaNobleInTheLibrary
You need access to models with dark skin, though.
mugsyotoole
Ok, I apologize for my phrasing; as soon as I hit “post” I cringed. Doesn’t feel right. Sorry for the awkwardness.
AfterTheRainComesTheRainbow
It's not a magical knowledge. It's learning and practice. Like anything.
SatanicSpirals
So, I'm not a photographer, I draw. But it is a hard barrier for me too as an artist to break. It isn't a simple shift of technique. 1/
SatanicSpirals
You have to take your general lighting into consideration for the scene, and overall, you just get used to what you use as models the most.
SatanicSpirals
My solution? I like drawing fighters, so to try and break bias, diving into PoC that fight. The hard part is I mostly draw with ballpoint
