Building a diy ambilight with some ws2812b led strips, an arduino uno and a raspberry pi running kodi with the boblight plugin. Have not included the config files for the arduino and the boblight plugin, if anyone wants them i'll add them as soon as i get home!

Cutting and soldering the led strips

My friend was very satisfied with his soldering skills. We used ws2812b leds, so only 3 pins to solder, pwr, gnd and data.

Connected to a controller we had lying around, it lights up! Despite us amateurs handling a solder iron in its vincinity

Some more soldering..

Attaching it to the backside of the tv. Since we didnt have much faith in the tape on the strip, so we bought double sided tape

Fixing up a solder point that broke off while attaching strips to tv

Whoo, we have light! Now time to connect the arduino!

Arduino connected with usb to the raspberry for power and i/o. Datapin on ledstrip connected to pin 13 on the arduino, and a cable to ground the powersupply from the ledstrips to the arduino. So something wont fry i guess?

Putting the tv back and booting up everything

Boblight config to generate a config file that fits the led setup you have, we used 31 leds on top and bottom, and 26 on each side for a total of 114

Whoop whoop! Seems to be working without further problems! A little bit of color calibration is in order, but otherwise fine!

Cat tax, i couldnt find the other two for a group picture

I just put a lamp behind my TV

For least eye strain you should use a 4000k light source

Great project! How quickly does the color change? Is it instantaneous or does it output a last x-second average?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Had it instantaneous at first, but it became a bit hard on the eyes, about a 0.5sec delay gave a much smoother experience

Neat. BTW people kodi is a new form of multi media library. One of its strong points is plugins that allow you to stream movies or shows

Yup, totally awesome.

KODI is renamed XBMC, and was one of the first media center-distributions

Look up kodi + genesis plug in by some guy named Joe on youtube. To learn more.

Thank you for that. I was curious what was going on here, but I like this ambient light thing. Seems it would add to the overall experience

Eh, I use plex. Easier to use.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I use plex at home too, the scraping works much better i think. Plex recognizes stuff that kodi just seems to ignore in my movie folder :(

That's super cool! Do you have a video of it in action?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I should have somewhere, i'll check and get back to you!

nice, let me know :)

what a waste of electricity, time, and resources. Also thanks for contributing more to global warming and early on set blindness.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 28

Also you're fucking wrong. Having light behind a television helps relieve and reduce stress to your eyes.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think your breath is the only waste here. Kindly fuck yourself with a spear.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But having a TV isn't a waste of electricity or bad for your eyes. Shut up you moron.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because you contribute SO MUCH to stopping global warming.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

LOL, shut the fuck up... someone made something they liked and wanted to share because they liked it. Youre such a douche.

Well, i made something pretty that im proud of. I just hope most other people will appreciate it too! :)

How is it that a fucking dick such as yourself has "glorious" notoriety? Please die.

Also a serial reposter.

"ws2812b led strips, an arduino uno and a raspberry pi running kodi with the boblight plugin." Is that english?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

English, motherfucker, do you speak it?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No? No, I don't.

Bueno

I feel like I would be super annoyed if I had to watch tv like that, but props for making something cool I guess?

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Depends on what you're watching, regular tv makes it more annoying than anything, but movies like avatar get pretty cool!

Can you dun these LEDs? Seems like way to many and really bright. I would opt for a third of that intensity

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, on these pictures they are running about 90% brightness, but they are a bit too bright

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

About 60-70% is easier on the eyes and still gives a nice effect

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

a nice :)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And you can also use less leds, wont be as accurate, and the effect would be larger single "blobs" of color

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah thats true

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So does the color change with what's on he screen? I'm not really handy, but would love to do this.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The only thing that was a bit tricky was the soldering, everything else is pretty well explained on a number of guides :)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it checks the colors on the edge of the screen and then projects them accordingly on the wall behind

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is there a more in depth "beginners guide" somewhere? I just have LED strips from Ikea on the back of my flat screen. This looks better

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But there are several different guides for this, depending on what kind of ledstrips you use. We used ws2812b, but others work too!

Yeah, http://www.tweaking4all.com/home-theatre/xbmc/xbmc-boblight-openelec-ws2811-ws2812/ is the one we followed to do this :)
