Effective striking comes from measured straight shots down the pipe. Also the stances in TKD leave you more open to takedowns than Muay Thai

We used plastic ones that snapped together and had a certain force needed to break them, which makes them reusable.

Have done taekwondo, can confirm. For my place at least, boards for testing were actually hard to break. These are for entertainment.
