Those with 2-digits traverse the entire country
If they end in "0" they run East-West (10, 20, 30, ..)
If they end in "5" they run North-South (5, 15, 25, ..)

Those with 3-digits are bypasses and contain the last 2 digits of the interstates they bypass.

With some exceptions :)

Why skip 60?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The numbers also correspond with the percentage of the country to the west or south

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now here me out run high speed rail, 6 maybe 8 lines parallel to the interstates

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I take i15 and i80 regularly to get to work.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lmao, route 45 is only Dallas to Houston.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is straight up stolen from CGP Grey on YT

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

as an ex-trucker from canada, i can say without doubt, i wish my country had the american interstate system. the mile markers... 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

actually being there, and the exits being tied with their numbers is honestly something that haunts me when i drive in canada

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

No label for I-65?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

5 is not 2 digits

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Besides maryland and the goddamn beltway. Took me a few weeks to get used to it. My wife is still salty about those roads

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

they don’t show 50, the greatest highway of them all

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At least change up the text when you repost from the front page @op

4 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 4

LOL

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

For a repost, it sure fucked up most of the information

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How is this awarded Originality award when it is a rip off of CPG Grey's Youtube channel?

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

CGP Grey sorry

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I despise that this got "originality"

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

yeah me too.. mabey give the award to CGP Grey

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I have driven the entire length of the 40 at least twice. It’s a long country.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wait, where is 50, 60 and 65?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The 75/85 connector in the heart of Atlanta is the dumbest shit ever. They become one road for about 2 miles. A nightmare in rush hour.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I assume 2 identical digits are diagonal? 22, 55, 88, 66 etc.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

How come there's no I-50 or 60?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Out of these 16 ones shown, how many have you guys driven on? I've done 10 of the 16.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

10

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm not American, but isn't Route 66 a real thing? It is two digits and doesn't end in zero or five...

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It doesn't exist anymore. Was decommissioned when the Interstate system was finished. Most of the roads are gone as well.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Interstates are part of a specific program for highways that was created after (and caused the decline of) Route 66.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you want to be bored to tears, drive I80 through Nebraska ?

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or I-Anything through the Southwest.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was expecting Nevada. Hundreds of miles in a perfectly straight line.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or I-70 through Kansas. Go slow, tho, or the Kansas troopers gon get ya.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I-70 through Missouri is at least as bad, but not so many speed checkers.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

IMHO, it's an awful drive everywhere between Denver and Columbus, OH. But KS is the worst for me because of how slow you gotta drive.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_Highway_System "Spur routes deviate from their parent and do not return; these are given an odd 1/"

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"... first digit. [and are 3 digits]" I think things are muddled now because some spurs have been extended, cities have grown, and so on.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also, as the network has grown we now have other odds like 57 and 77 which run N-S and other evens like 4 and 94 (N Dakota etc) E-W.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Interstates were designed during the cold war to include sections that are long enough to land a B52 bomber to help survive a nuke attack

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That's just a myth. They were partially sold as a way for large scale evacuations of cities in case of war though

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Someone watched the newest cgp grey video

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Correction: If the first number is even in a 3 digit, then it's a bypass. If the first number is odd, then it goes into the city.

4 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 2

Spur not "goes to a city". it is called a spur.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

See I-475, through Flint.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But most importantly, the floor is lava!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Odd usually means a spur, but not necessarily into a city. 195 spurs off 95 south of Baltimore and goes to BWI Airport..

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And pretty sure it's just even/odd for the 2-digits, not 0 vs 5.

4 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

You are correct.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

NOPE! I-75 goes past Tampa. I-275 goes THROUGH Tampa.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not always. 680 runs through Omaha, NE. 480 runs through downtown.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Aren’t even first digits loops and odd first digits bypasses?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope! I-275 goes through Tampa. Not a loop.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If it's an even first digit, it reconnects to the interstate it is spurred from. If it's an odd first digit, it doesn't.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For three digits, I thought first number being even meant it re-joined the freeway, e.g. the 405 splits off the 5 but re-joins… 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

2/2 But if the first digit is odd, it splits off and doesn’t re-join, like the 705

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just kidding after more googling it looks like odd numbers also rejoin

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, I think you were right the first time. The intent was to not connect. and you've found exceptions. Many (most?) don't.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am missing route 66. It's rather famous ya know.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 4

Also why no 50?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Route 66 was a U.S. Numbered Highway; not the same thing as an Interstate Highway.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Route 66 was a US-level highway, not an interstate. Was, as it was removed in 1985 after the entire route had been bypassed by interstates.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Initially, Rt. 66 ran north/south. In the 1920s or 30s, it was changed to east/west. The both cross each other in downtown Albuquerque.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I used to live right off route 66 10 years ago. I would take it sometimes to different towns instead of the interstate.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

66 is not an interstate hwy - believe it is a us route

4 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Yep and erroneously people assume it spans the whole country, I think the east part starts in Kentucky. Don't quote me.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it starts in Chicago

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yup, Chicago to L.A.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And it's pretty boring. A lot of abandoned old diners along the old route 66

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fuck North Dakota, I guess.

4 years ago | Likes 521 Dislikes 6

That's what I've always said.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

As a North Dakotan, ouch….

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

'tis a silly place.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

RIGHT!!!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And Vermont

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a general rule, yes.

4 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

I94 goes from Billings to Detroit I think

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Flyover country

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

YES! Fuck North Dakota. There should only be 1 Dakota

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I 94 goes right thru

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And I think I-29 goes through the East edge N and S.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Correct.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Definately.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only when they become MegaKota will they be feared.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If we could just end the war between Best Dakota and Worst Dakota

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

they know what they did

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, fuck it in particular

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The Dakotas don't deserve two states.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I-29 connects canada to mexico through the middle of the country. Post isnt fully accurate

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's missing some major highways. Heck, there's an I-95 running north/south through Idaho.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow! Lol

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have some love for Vermont

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are interstates in North Dakota, just none of the majors, which are pointed out on these maps.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"We're not even the best Dakota"

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Paris. Milan. Fargo.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

South Dakota, gateway to lovely North Dakota

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Can’t. No way to get there.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I-94 goes through it.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's no good reason to go to ND.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Or SD, if I'm honest.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hahaha

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Correct. What use does it serve, exactly?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

#1 honey producing state by far

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Essentially

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I94. Goes through as many states at I25. This is a bad map.

4 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 14

25 goes though some big ass states. # of states means jack shit.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can confirm.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And I29

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Also I29 is a pretty big shipping route.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sure - let's just call this map "bad" and bring on the hate... ?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The map is not complete - I94 is missing - it goes through there

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Not a major. All explained in the very interesting linked video.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I-77 is missing too, but idk it’s borderline whether it’s important or long enough to be included on this map.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

There is nothing there anyway.

4 years ago | Likes 204 Dislikes 4

A beautiful woman behind every tree.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They sneeze and spook Saskatchewan

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

a handful of Republicans

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

If there were a highway, there could be something there. *sigh

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I doubt that very much

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure I've only heard of north Dakota as myth. Like dragons and the McRib being good.

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure North Dakota exists. Unlike Wyoming.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Gather ‘round, children. I will tell you tales. North Dakota? I’ve SEEN it!
