I started out with an A1C of Corn Syrup for blood (14-16) back in March of last year which is firmly within Diabeetus country, My last blood tests puts me out of even pre-diabetic and into just At Risk, Doc says next time around we can shift my metformin to the "normal" version instead of the mixed one I've been on.
Even my kidneys are behaving a fuckton better and my heart's failure "rating" is a fraction of what it was in December (was 26000 when I spent that week in hospital and is now 2500, the lower the better)
It's surprising what having something to live for can do.

I envy you. As someone who is half carbohydrate from his father's side, it's a very difficult process to reverse the effects of the Beetus. I'm proud of you. That is inspiring.

If I may ask: how old are you?

Congratulations!! I recently ran out of my ozempic and have been bracing myself for just using my short acting insulin and being careful... Only to have my blood sugar only rise as high as 120 after eating and being around 70-80 from fasting
Bojovnik84
Good job but remember, you do always have it. Don't let up or it comes back.
ShadeMeadowsArt
I'm extremely happy for you
RealityIsOftenDisappointing
What did you do? Any special dietary restrictions or exercise routines?
MelodyLightfoot
Cut out sugar (soda, candy, etc) almost completely (been cheating a little bit recently due to stress) Cut out most junk food and limited carbs, monitored blood sugar with a tester and adjusted my meals accordingly + daily dose of 50mg/1000mg sitagliptin/metformin also helped that I had a goal that was dependent on Diabetes being at least somewhat under control. I did try to exercise but then the heart failure started and that took months to diagnose and I was super swolen and lethargic during

I found out I had the “sugar”. Got a continuous Glucose monitor (G6) and my A1C went way down after 8 months and open heart. 1st

Here here @MelodyLightfoot jolly good

My A1C hit 5.7 exactly, for one test. I said fuck to the no. Back under within 3 months, down more since. I have 4/4 grandparents and 1/2 (maybe 2/2, but that would require him to go to the doctor...) parents - that motherfucker is gunning for me. Major congrats.
maeta
Wow that's amazing! Good jorb! How did you do it?
barredone
Good job! Great numbers!
liquinas
I didn't even know you could get rid of diabeetus. Congrats!
MelodyLightfoot
It's more that I have it well under control though doc thinks it's possible for me to even get out of at risk at this point if I keep it up.
BubbaRunski
Good job! Metformin took me from a 12.4 to 6.2 in 3 months so know that there are definitely ways to stay in that pre-diabetic range

Can I ask what kind of diet you switched to? I can't cook but I think I need to make some changes.
MelodyLightfoot
I'll just copy another response I gave a tweak it a bit :) Cut out sugar (soda, candy, etc) almost completely (been cheating a little bit recently due to stress) Cut out most junk food and limited carbs, monitored blood sugar with a tester and adjusted my meals accordingly. Switched to fresh and dried fruits for sweet cravings as well as nuts, water with some sugar free flavoring helped too just keep an eye on the aditives they use (not all created equal) and don't abuse it.

Incredible job, congratulations!
MelodyLightfoot
So damned happy about it, and this is WITH the minor stress eating I've been doing the past month or two due to the heart thing. So if I hadn't I'd in an even better spot.

Great job! I can only apologize for the joke I’m a out to make. Your success made sure you keep the name MelodyLightfoot and don’t swap to MelodyNofoot
MelodyLightfoot
Yeah, the NoFoot clan of orphan thieves, assassins and ne'er do wells sounds a lot less amusing.

As a retired nurse, I can appreciate your humor. My last year working I think that 25% of the patients on the medical unit were those with issues secondary to diabetes, mostly foot issues. And so few of those had good long term outcomes.
MelodyLightfoot
Sorry to hear you experienced so much defeet...
evildadunit
congratulations you dieting Godess
MelodyLightfoot
still got a lot of effort to put forth on the dieting front I'm affraid but thanks :)

buddy of mine just pulled this off - props

First: an A1C of Corn Syrup? Lololololol
Second: Well done taking charge of your physical health!

helps to visualise how bad it was ;P

Amazing! I legit thought it was gonna be wednesday for a sec and I was very confused
MelodyLightfoot
Different frog I believe.
Smartbutnotreally
My AIC was similar at one point... Was on metformin but that only did so much.. Now on ozempic and my AIC is a solid 5.6. I think I'm one of the rare ones that take ozempic for diabetes.. 😂
Miauw5
Reading all the responses, I understand the sentiment but..please stop saying you 'reversed or stopped' your diabetes. Great your blood sugar levels are like before you had T2, but also you still have diabetes. It won't go away and this gives an unfair message to those who have a harder time to controle it.
Miauw5
Also great work OP, hope you live long and prosperous!
MelodyLightfoot
I haven't said I stopped or reversed it, note the use of the word "technically" in the post, i've also used "getting it under control"
Miauw5
Dude, wasn't knocking your post. Great work, happy for you! In hindsight I should have tagged this as a reply to one of the responses, that would have been clearer. Some of the responders seem to be unaware of the difference...
FeloniousMonk13
Surprised Diabeetus man isn't in the Gif library.. anyway, please everyone picture a fat guy with a walrus mustache who says DIABEETUS. thx.

Yeah the template selection has really really suffered with the new version of the meme gen. Had to source Colonel frog from some sort of meme wiki.

Good job. As someone with a similar track (A1C of >16 and doing All The Insulin! with a CGM) to now (5.2ish and bothering to check blood sugar sometimes when I feel like it), it's amazing how different it is. The theory is that my beetus was a long COVID symptom, because I went from normal to pancake syrup in 4 months, with a bout of COVID in between.
MythIncarnate
Holy fuck I thought I was the only one to experience this. Got Covid and ended up hospitalized for diabetic ketoacidosis, but now it's not even a thing, my A1C has been rock-steady normal and despite my doc insisting on monitoring it it hasn't changed in about 18 months.
growlingmeattank
Checking in. A1C was normal then 15+ four months later. 700 glucose got me sent to ER. Down to 5.8 now (nice work u/baecaughtmewackin 5.2 has my respect) but still unexplained except maybe for a virus.
jetact12
Yeah there is a form of long covid that messes with your sugar processing if you have any tendency or family connection with Diabetus. Messed with my sister for a few months, then went away.
ShadyEsperanto
type 1 here. fuck all y'all
kidding, kidding. congrats dude, that's awesome
MelodyLightfoot
Hey now no need for hate we all have our defects. ;) for instance my brain doesn't brain good and I had to endure the wrong puberty and it's after effects for far too long because again brain doesn't brain good.
ShadyEsperanto
my brain is adhd af but i'm just used to it by now, so i'd say you're right, sounds like it all evens out ;) though really i'm just used to the diabetes at this point as well, and maintenance is pretty easy with a cgm. my weird take is that type 1 sounds easier to deal with than type 2 to me: if i want a giant piece of cheesecake, i just have to take a shot first and i'm good
of course, the best option is to avoid it completely, so congrats again. i'm guessing that took a lot of effort
MelodyLightfoot
Yeah I imagin covid fucked a lot of people, mine however was self hate, I was eating like a garbage truck with a sugar addiction and I knew about it about 6 or 7 years ago but chose to ignore it in hopes it would kill me back then. So now that I've realized what was wrong and being healthier is a pre-requisite for transition I'm sort of paying for the past :/ But still I will take any win at this point.
LongCommentChainAppreciator
How did you beat your sugar addiction? I got a pretty bad one going now :(
MelodyLightfoot
had to go cold turkey, did switch to water flavoring things just made sure they were 0 sugar (which usually means a different additive so you have to make sure its not one of the really bad ones that screw your bumhole or something.) Also replaced candy with fresh fruits and nuts and sometimes went to the bulk store and made my own bags of dried mixed fruits/nuts as well
PlanckEraWasMyBestEra
Heyyyy transition also helped me focus on getting healthier! I lost 50 pounds in about 10 months (not as impressive as some people but it was great for me) after I started because I finally cared. I kind of hit a plateau for a couple of years but I'm back on it now. <3
MelodyLightfoot
50lbs is nothing to sneeze at, it took me a long ass time down from 360lbs to where I'm at now at 168-174lbs Still have a ways to go and I wish I could get some surgical help but still.. Proud of ya :)
CommodusLeitdorf
Lucky you, Covid turned my type 2 (which I had under control through diet and exercise) into type 1. Almost died too. But I'm glad others can get better
jamiedBreaker
Mind sharing more for the sake of education? I was under the impression that Type 1 Diabetes was genetic and inherited.
mynameistc
Thats type 1.5 LADA no?
redtails2649
How did you do it? Current diabetic looking for advice!!
maxpenguin
Not op, but join us in no sugar, fasting and low carb land. T2 improvement is very possible and actually not that hard. See Jason Fung on Reversing Type 2 Diabetes: https://youtu.be/6KS7M0s2fJM also he has a book called "The Diabetes Code: Prevent and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally" all the best - you can do it!
MelodyLightfoot
Cut out sugar (soda, candy, etc) almost completely (been cheating a little bit recently due to stress) Cut out most junk food and limited carbs, monitored blood sugar with a tester and adjusted my meals accordingly + daily dose of 50mg/1000mg sitagliptin/metformin
HairyChairstepper
Is it worth it? I'm terrified and struggling
MelodyLightfoot
For me it is, it's helped me shed some more weight, even though I'm still not as thin as I wish it's still a good thing but to me this was a means to an end, I would not have been allowed to start HRT if I had not shown I was working towards at least controlling the diabetes. So that helped my struggle quite a bit, that and despite the fact i still joke about looking like a cave troll(just one with a wig on now) I do like myself more now so those are motivating
baloothead
My docs advice almost 20 years ago. "If it tastes good spit it out".
MelodyLightfoot
That is horrible advice but okay.
