Tom looks nothing like an actual cat, he just has the cultural symbols that we understand to mean 'cat'. Kitty is watching the colours move.
How many theories are there about cats ability to tell apart technology from other things, and not "weirdly shaped mech cats"?

The tv probably looks like a flip book to he cat. Look up a vid of a kitten popping a water Ballon and you can see 1/2
He kitten's eyes tracking the water as it falls from the balloon.

Since that’s a newer tv it might not look like that. FPS has gone up enough in new TVs that dogs and cats can actually see most TVs now

However, since it’s an old cartoon, the old FPS might still be the same and the kitten could be still seeing flashes

Hey, so something the other replies have forgotten to mention is that, while Tom looks little like a real cat, he SOUNDS very similar to a
real cat in certain sequences, hissing, mewing, etc. If he hissed during the growth sequence, then the cat certainly would be interested.2/3
Cats use vision as a secondary sense, with scent and hearing on par, so whether tom looks like a cat is not as relevant as the sounds.
I was thinking about the same thing, I've seen cat react to kittens videos playing on my phone because of the meowing. 1/2
The question still remain: he hear a cat meowing, but can he tell the cat is a lie/recorded?Or he think there is a cat jailed inside the tv?
