A guy in my class literally said "I don't believe in science, I'm a christian." Made me think of this.

the how is science, the why is belief. the should is philosophy

"I dont know why you always have to be judging me, because I only believe in Science." - ESQUELETO

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think a more important question is whether science is a method of thinking, or a body of knowledge

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Scientologists believe in Jesus being a scientist, right? And Tom Cruise is the all father or something? Compromise.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I believe in lots of scientists and have investigated some. Am I doing this right?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah...we kinda did the opposite.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But I believe in science, I do not believe in religion.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Cept it's both

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Science has become dogma for many. True science is a verb, people. Not a proper noun. Stop deifying it. Leave deification to metaphysics.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I come from the future. No luck there.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hello from future further, oh god, I'd like to go back

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Science isn't a belief system though. I don't believe in science. I investigate using science, and I believe in my faith.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

truthfully we can know nothing for 100% certain for good or bad everyone has to act upon their beliefs. I am pretty sure of a few things tho

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I doubt that guy in your class said that. If he did he must have stepped straight out of the 19th century.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I know ppl who have expressed that sentiment without using those exact words. To some, the bible is literal truth.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You have have belief in something that also has empirical data behind it. So this doesnt mean that much. As in 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I believe in the proofs that science has presented, and has the ability to further investigate, and possibly revise in the future.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am thinking more thinking of the anti christians who see SCIENCE as their God....

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 8

I saw a couple of those yesterday: https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/21/31701696_8c14a5cfff.jpg

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Sure, but do we have to believe what the scientists say or disregard unless we alone can reproduce the results?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually quite a few people do essentially treat science as a belief system; it's called Scientism.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes... A method that you BELIEVE will work.. Sheesh, people don't get simple things...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is no need to believe anything at all. As a mode of cognition belief is entirely obsolete.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

More a lack of a method.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The fun thing about science is that it's true whether you believe in it or not.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Is it wrong to believe in logic and empirical evidence?

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Ask BLM, radical feminists, creationists, the KKK, North Korea, practitioners or Sharia law, WBC, Trump supporters, or Atheism+ for a start.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

No, it's merely pointless. It's like believing that your heart beats, it'll do that whether or not you believe it

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It's OK if people say they don't believe in science; but they need to give back electricity, television, most of their food & toilet paper.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

All of their food* We eat almost nothing that wasn't genetically modified on some level. Domestication has that effect.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And most importantly...their computers and phones

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Whoa - that would instantly eradicate the ALL-CAPS RANT syndrome...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But at the same time, I do believe in science!

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 3

There is no need to. It is nothing if not un-reliance on belief.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Me too! I believe in scientific facts, but I also believe in an everlasting and omnipotent God that loves me dearly and forgives me daily

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I believe in God, and i don't think he loves and forgives all.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Sarcasm? Haha! Serious? Haha... Sad face.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Are you not baptized ?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As a baptized Baptist, Christians are most definitely not required to disregard science in its entirety

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Nacho libre reference;p But as someone who serves the same King, I agree :)

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

How did I not get that?!?! http://gif.co/vt9L.gif

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well if people have to believe something the scientific method trumps Joeseph Smith.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

My gfs dad told me yesterday that men and dinosaurs existed on earth at the same time. I stuttered a disbelieving noise. I was flabbergasted

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 4

Blame the Flintstones.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How would he know better? He's probably had no decent education.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

He hasn't actually. Barely finished high school and that was during the 60's

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He's a born again Christian. Atheist till he was 47 I think. Then literally overnight became a bible thumper. Gf said it was disconcerting.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Quoting Bill Maher it takes a very intelligent man to remain a ath. as its far more difficult to prove yourself vs just knowing your right

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A few years ago, Minnesota had a really harsh winter. My fiance's cousin joked that it was because of global warming. I said, "It is!" He >

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

looked at me like he felt sorry for me, then shook his head discouragingly and said, "No, no." Deciding that no, we're not discussing this.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I really wish the media hadn't dubbed it global warming. Climate change is so much more accurate....

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Agreed. It's a bad name. It's confusing to anyone who doesn't like to think very hard about things.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Global Climate Change only predicts the increase in severe weather. It actually states very little on the avg temp rise. - Enviro Scientist

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Statements by scientists aren't always statements of science. When it's believed rather than proven is where problems arise.

10 years ago | Likes 110 Dislikes 3

Whether something is scientific or not is actually quite clearly analyzable according to modern scientific theory

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Like with religion and other superstition you mean?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 10

No no, you got it all wrong. Soccer moms, models and food bloggers do the real science.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

You're wrong, science is done in front of a camera with your clothes off.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Uncle bob? Is that you?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Science can be a belief system something like Scientology or a misunderstanding of core concepts that leaves scientific rigor open to debate

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Scientology isn't science. v

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You miss my frame of reference. Wow this is old lol. Some people who are not scientist view science like a religion. This opens science 1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

to debate on issues that are not debatable science is while a religion like Scientology is perverse on empirical data and belief based.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Science by definition has proven evidence, and faith by definition doesn't. That's why they're science and faith.

10 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 2

if there weren't so many "scientists for sale" who will create false studies for money, that might be true

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Who is doing that and what studies?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But a lot of people preach science how people preach religion... with blind trust...it's just as irritating.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'd beg to differ, because when you use "blind trust" with faith, you have very little to no evidence to back up your beliefs, whereas 1/X

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Science (when done properly) is peer reviewed / able to be observed in multiple facets with multiple types of evidence which others can see.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah but so many people read random articles online thinking they're 100% true and preach like they know everything...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The problem is people just believe everything they see online that is a "science" post and run around preaching it like they kow everything

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Faith is believing in something despite reason. Wouldn't be faith if it was logical.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 8

“Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities though not beheld.” (Heb 11:1)

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

In other words. in the past the sun has always come up, so we have faith that it will come up tomorrow,

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Ok how does that apply to religion? If you want to change up definitions it's going to make communicating difficult.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Faith and science are similar when you use the bibles definition of faith. Most people think faith means believing without evidence.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Faith isn't necessarily despite reason; it's just without solid proof.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Which is strongly against the scientific method.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

That's why it's not science. Science is immensely useful but there are good things that aren't science.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Like Wat

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You got my point in the first sentence. Science is separate from faith.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Any proof*

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

That's not fair. There are plenty of bits of proof for events in the bible, so to some, that adds credence to the bible as a whole.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Events of recorded history in a book with extraordinary claims =! credence for extraordinary claims.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

There's proof to believers

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Assumption and supposition are not proof.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a Christian, why couldn't have God created the world in a glorious Big Bang? More exciting that way.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Why god of the gaps in the first place? Not knowing something and learning about it is more fun than sticking in an unverifiable assumption.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Ask yourself this. What was the first event ever? And what started it? How did something exist to start it? Wouldn't its creation be the 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

First event? If you go back far enough, At some point, something sprang from nothing. There isn't even a framework for explaining how 2/3

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's possible. I'm not saying I belive, but that very first something from nothing, the prime mover, that's the reason for God. To some.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, that's what god of the gaps is. Just because we can't explain something now, doesn't mean a non-evidence based assumption is true.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your comment has changed my entire religious beliefs. Thank you. You are doing good work, son.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

But seriously. People complain that Christians don't believe in science, and when there are some that do (me), people complain. Just. Ugh.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

It's more marveling at the cognitive dissonance, not really complaining.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I can believe that my deity utilizes science to create what I know to be true in the world. It's better than thinking science is fake.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Not everyone is going to share the same beliefs. Appreciate diversity, be happy that there are religious people who like science and move on

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Not trying to change it, just interested. Regardless, you're welcome. :)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It's great your interested, but it'd take way more than 140 characters to explain why I'm a Christian. Just be happy that there are those

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

of us who appreciate and respect science and a number of other things we're not known for such as marriage equality and being pro choice.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

*you're. Sorry.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

You seriously fucking down voted me correcting my grammar? Holy shit dude get your panties out of your ass I didn't murder your grandmother

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

You're the one getting angry over points. ;)
