I didn't liked the portrayal of the Ferengi in the first season. They had a structural anti-Semitic vibe. But that was resolved with the character development of Nog an Rom.
When Nog joined Starfleet instead of Sisko's son, and Rom dealt with sexism and socialism, for me, the stereotype was broken.
I still haven't decided how I feel about the Maquis.

Deep Space Nine is some of the best television of the late 20th century.

I find so much of it brings me joy and draws me back in to this day. I’m so glad I was able to catch this documentary in theaters.

Armin's human makeup is pretty convincing.

TNG will always be my favourite, but DS9 is special. It was better in some ways and with O'Brien and Worf moving to DS9 it basically felt like TNG never ended.

Sisko for President! DS9 is the best Star Trek. It has aged well. I always wanted one of those Niners tees.

For some reason I never realised that Quark was played by the principal from Buffy.

6 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I was too young for these things but I did used to watch Deep Space 9 when it came on. I knew nothing of it when I started watching it. I just liked seeing Odo do his shifting.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And it turned out to be the best Trek show ( but it took them a little wile to find its style and feet). Nuanced characters, few black and white situations but all shades of grey, humor, drama, tragedy all equally mixed throughout its run and above all a larger departure from the old show of the week formula where nothing impacted the other episodes or larger events.

I love TNG and all the other shows too but DS9 knocked it out of the park for me.

DS9 is the best Star Trek series. And honestly, Roddenberry was full of shit. I think truly great Star Trek is about overcoming prejudice, not about already being there. His 'utopia' didn't even exist in the original series, and he didn't push it until he spent a decade getting his ego over-inflated by fanboys. And Gene Coon was Bill Finger to Roddenberry's Bob Kane. Coon came up with most of what is loved about Star Trek TOS. Roddenberry stole the credit after Coon died.

6 months ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 8

The utopia not existing yet is why i love star trek enterprise. They are still finding their way and its awesome to witness. Though the writing was not great for the last season.

DS9 is the only Star Trek series I rewatch every 3 years, just long enough to forget a few things

6 months ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 1

I've been trying to forget it all for 30 years.

DS9 dug deeper into the culture of the different species than any other Star Trek before and after.

And for that I love it ❤️❤️❤️

DS9 is my favorite Star Trek show.

Just to be controversial as I like both B5 & DS9... but I prefer B5 https://www.plagiarismtoday.com/2020/01/29/exploring-the-babylon-5-vs-deep-space-nine-plagiarism-allegations/

DS-9 is my nostalgia Trek. It is not the most exciting, and I really dislike the episodes with ambassador Troi. But it's the best series.

Alao, I don't think you were supposed to be able to decide how you feel about the Maquis.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The episodes with Lwaxana were some of her better written episodes, though. It definitely humanized her a bit more, and gave her more dimensions than TNG did. But I think she's a unique character that really captured the romantic heart of Trek.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

DS9 is literally THE BEST Star Trek of any Star Trek. The acting, the character development, the world building, the heartfelt lessons, the grand narrative... When I daydream of a time when we had a real vision for a beautiful future, I dream of DS9 and everything it stood for.

6 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I actually went to see this doc when it was in theaters. DS9 is my favorite series, the overall character development and how they were written made them more like real people overall. (TNG kinda got it in the end). And my email tone on my phone has been the Cardassian computer since you could even use your own files for that (yes, I am from well before phones that allowed WAV or MP3 sounds)

Being conflicted about The Maquis is the point.

6 months ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

agreed. the maqui story is messy.
its : “well people gonna be people and hows the federation gonna handle things when reason and fancy tech cant solve everything.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

exactly...the federation has its lofty goals and rules, lets talk things out and dont resort to violence, yadayada, that always fail whenever the other side absolutely doesnt care about "ethics" and stuff like that...the maquis are exactly the people who are living in a "fight or die" reality and consequently decided to fight and are trying to win by all means as their very existence depends on it...and thats ideological conflict is ever-present in our real world, thats why it hits home...

6 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I think that's what makes it such an interesting ST show. It starts when the main conflict is already over and isn't just about stopping the bad guy or saving someone's life, it's about what happens when you've already done that and are dealing with what comes after, which is rarely smooth. And it frequently delves into the idea of morals vs. pragmatism and that sometimes in conflict you don't have a good choice and a bad choice, often you just have bad choices and worse choices.

DS9 BECAME peak Trek. First season was crap, but the same can be said about ALL the (genuine) Treks. I always find season 1 a slog, but I know there is pure latinum on the other side.

Same. Garak has a lot to do with that for me, but overall I just like the giant heavy story arcs. Love TNG, but the insulated standalone feel of each episode made it seem like nothing really mattered. Hey, wasn't Worf permanently disabled last week??

Oh, it's definitely In the Pale Moonlight.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My gods "The Visitor" is one of the most heartbreaking, yet uplifting episode of television I've ever seen. Tony Todd was a brilliant character actor and elevated everything he was in. His passing was a great loss, but I appreciate everything he was in because of his immense talent.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Tony Todd is the indeed amazing, elevated that episode. rip

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Which is far beyond the stars again?

6 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

the one where they play sci-fi writers and cisco writes about DS9 and his dad drops the banger “You are the dreamer & the dream”

And this scene with Benny's mental breakdown is fucking brilliant :

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

too bad he doesn’t do the circuit as much as the other actors. Would like to express to him in person how brilliant this episode is and not just in a star trek context. It harkened back to the old sci-fi like The Eve of Judgment Day or martian chronicles

RIP René Auberjonois :(

6 months ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

the odo/quark dynamic was a highlight of the series

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He was so, so good voicing Janos Audron in the Legacy of Kain series too. Man had a hell of a talent.

6 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The voice cast for that game series was the pinnacle of gaming VA. And some of the main cast have been in Star Trek.

6 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Honestly though who hasn't lol.

Simon Templeman did a character in The Orville too which is like... Star Trek's spiritual cousin, sorta?

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why does Jeff Combs have broken glasses. That guy is a great actor. Don't tell me he's broke?!

6 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

He can just be frugal as well.
I have three sets of reading glasses, one with a cracked glass. It works fine enough though for where I use it mainly, which is the kitchen to read labels (damn tiny letterings..).
They cost next to nothing, but why spend money when I don’t need it all the time and it still works?

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

looks to me like his glasses wouldn't fit without one of the arms missing... though that doesn't really answer the question, so... maybe he is broke... not all actors are rich. Especially ones that play so many roles on a single show like him.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They did break Gene Roddenberry's rules for Star Trek, because they had interpersonal conflict between crew members. But I ask you, is that rule more important than compelling characters and well-written stories? Who wants to watch a show where the characters never butt heads? Give me the Odo-Quark dynamic and whatever the hell Garak had going on over everyone holding hands, any day of the week. Also, as for the exploring strange new worlds stuff, how many Runabouts went through that wormhole?

6 months ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

Odo and Quark weren't crew members, and I remember plenty of interpersonal conflict in TOS and TNG

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because he understood the effect media like books and tv had on everyday people
Rules are easier to decide to break or not when you understand why they exist

6 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think what people are reacting to, when they complain about it, is what later star trek turned into. Dark and gritty actionfest low concept drama. Star trek is at its best when it's dealing with new weird explorations, or high concept takes on normal drama, and at its worst when it's interchangeable with any generic space action show. Gene thought it could run entirely one the former, but it turns out it takes a bit of the latter to keep things fresh and grounded.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

eh dint watch TOS or TNG and only watched episodes of Voyager cause i was a teenager and 7of9 was a character on it. So to me ds9 is kinda stand alone and i dont think i would have watched if it was like the other series. it helped bring a more diverse section of fans to the franchise

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Was that ever *his* rule and not some forum-goer's take?

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean, if you wanna call Rick Berman "some forum-goer", then sure

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is that who they were quoting in the video above?

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They were reading comments from people who were aluding to statements made by Rick Berman https://www.startrek.com/en-un/news/rick-berman-looks-back-at-18-years-of-trek-part-2 So when I said it was Roddenberry's rule, that didn't just come from some forum-goer, it came from Berman

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks! Fascinating interview, I hadn't seen it before.

I think that's different than what was being said above, personally--my read is that Berman was saying Roddenberry didn't want major conflict in terms of factions & politics, not interpersonal--but maybe I'm misreading that!

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ds9 is actually my favorite of the first four series (I don't care to watch anything past that).

6 months ago | Likes 139 Dislikes 5

Dicovery was the best one out there in terms of action and truly unique plotlines.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

True but discovery was the "burnham show" and focusing on one characters perspective didn't sit well with the other nerds.
Lets not mention how mad they got with "spock didn't have a sister" "they never mentioned her" i can't think of but maybe three moments in my entire existence where my dad decided to talk to me about my sister and i'm pretty sure it works the other way around as well. Do other families sit around talking about each other all day?

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Strange New Worlds is pretty great

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Give Babylon 5 a shot. It's similar in a lot of ways to DS9, and while Sisko is the best Trek captain, I think I prefer B5 overall.

6 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Oh yeah, I love Babylon 5.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed, I love DS9. I watched DS9 as an adult actually but I watched Voyager as a kid with my mom, I will always love Voyager for the nostalgi but I think DS9 is just plain better "Star Trek"

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

My favorite is still TNG, simply for nostalgia reasons. But i will always say that DS9 is the best ST show.

I've seen all the shows and SNW is head and shoulders above all the others, followed by DS9, LD, TNG. All others are at a respectable distance of these, but still at least a 6 for me. It does help to watch Discovery S1-3 before SNW as it helps set the scene and crew aboard the Enterprise. Discovery gets a lot of hate, some it fair, but honestly isn't as bad as the bandwagon makes it out to be.

6 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

yeh only heard bad things about discovery. super intrigued about pike knowing he beep chair bound and still doing what needs to be done.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was the popular-to-hate one. But there are a couple amazing characters in there, most notably Saru and the Empress. But overall it really wasn't a bad show. Yeah a couple of things seem far fetched, even for ST standards. If you can just accept them in a "this is how it is" kind of way the whole show becomes a lot more enjoyable.

I don't think that people who call it a waste of their time are ST fans to begin with.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well here's my two cents, I've never rewatched any Discovery episodes, saw all of it and just couldn't bring myself to do a second watch. I think it got a little better in it's second to last season but not by much. There's no episode that stands out particularly. SNW started out strong but this last season was hit or miss. Lower Decks was just a light hearted show that played on Trek tropes history and themes. DS9 was good but I never cared much for the setting( I'm a federation bridge fan)

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Discovery had its flaws, but I enjoyed it on the whole. If not for Discovery we wouldn't have had SNW maybe LD.

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hands down SNW and Lower Decks are the best Treks. Though Lower Decks is chock full of references to TOS/TNG/DS9/Voyager (and others but mostly those)

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

will add lower decks to my queue, started SNW today and im liking pike and his # 2

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I recently learned the crossover episode with boimler and mariner, thats the actual voice actors. I was stupidly happy about this

6 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lower Decks is highly recommended, it's the best thing to happen to Star Trek since the old shows. Also have some cameos from DS9/Voyager/TNG people.

6 months ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 0

Discovery and brave new worlds were pretty good too.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Recently rewatched it aand... my only complaint is that it's a bit ADHD. Constantly stuff happening, constantly people talking. Just a bit much.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lower decks is an homage at the same time that it's smart enough to point out the loveable flaws with star trek.
It's the non pretentious version of itself

6 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

RIP to execs killing a good thing the people want

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not really into adult animation. I'm sure it's good and I've heard many good things about it but I can't stand the genre anymore. I do appreciate them making Garashir canon, though.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That was exactly my issue with it as well, I just couldn't get behind a star trek cartoon. Then I started watching it and let me tell you, I'm absolutely hooked!

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not that it was a Star Trek cartoon. It's just that it's a cartoon, period. I used to love Futurama. My gf watches it on her lunch breaks, and I can't stand it being on in the background, and it's one of the more bearable ones. I loved King of the Hill, but I don't even feel like watching the new show, no matter how good the ratings and praise.

6 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Stone me to death, but I think prodigy is a great show for kids

6 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Prodigy is just a great show. Even for adults. Got good DNA in that show. SNW is also good. But disco, Picard, both utter trash. Writers wouldn't know trek if it bashed them. DS9 is my favourite for being the dark underbelly of federation politics. The mixing pot and all that comes out of those utopian ideals. Outstanding

6 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Picard seasons 1 and 3 felt decent. It felt like there were multiple writers and only one or two was actually a fan, and how decent the show was depended on which writer had the helm, and was allowed let that fandom show instead of focusing pushing a message of... whatever.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree with all of that. except. Discovery was good. What are you talking about.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Hard disagree, Disco felt like a show someone copied pasted star trek names over to get the pitch greenlit, the writing was terrible in it's egregious explaining of what's going on instead of show and not tell, and they made unnecessary changes for no pay off. IMHO

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I didn't get into it when I tried watching. But I've since heard that it actually put together some solid plotlines. I'm probably going to give it another try; I just don't know when. I'm in a multi-year Star Trek Megabinge, currently nearing the end of ENT Seaason 2. So, it'll be a while.
