TL;DR at bottom. So, about 2 month ago I got a tooth ache in my rear left molar. After about a month of it getting more and more painful, I decided to bite the bullet (Oh haha.) and fork up the $150 dental exam fee to see if I needed a filling. I had not had a dental checkup in five years, as I work for a little above minimum wage and didn't want to spend that kind of money on something I considered superfluous as my teeth were fine.
Then I had the X-ray.
Turns out my lower wisdom teeth were impacted (sideways) and had grown so deeply into my molars that the molar roots were essentially rotting away. All in all, 6 of my teeth had to be surgically extracted to prevent further damage and relieve what had become debilitating pain, which cost me $2240. This constituted the significant majority of the savings I have been very slowly accumulating over the last several years. But that isn't where it ended. First, I developed Dry Socket. Not uncommon after an extraction, but very very painful. Back to the dentist for treatment, although the cost was included as aftercare in the original bill, so no big deal. Everything started to heal up properly except for what I thought was a splinter of tooth still working its way out of my gum that was starting to cut my tongue. Back to the dentist to get it pulled. Unfortunately, it wasn't a splinter. It was my lower jawbone, pushing its way through my gum tissue because of something called Lingual Bone Dehiscence, an extremely rare complication of the extraction. The only treatment: literally filing down the bone so the gum can regrow. This procedure was not covered by aftercare, and cost another $600. So I miserably handed over the last of my savings and $200 I had to borrow and went under the file. All was going well (except for the sound) until what felt like a lightning bolt went down my jaw. Nerve damage. I knew it was a possibility as I had been told by the dentist. What I did not realise was that it meant that i lost all sense of feeling and taste in the left side of my tongue. Most likely permanently. And all of it could have been prevented if I had just gone for a checkup earlier.
After all that I have two pieces of advice for people: get regular checkups, and maybe consider going to dental school. It pays very well.
TL;DR Lost 6 teeth, the feeling and taste in half of my tongue, and all the money I had in the world because I didn't want to spend 150 bucks on a checkup.

Teeth are the weakness of us all. I hope only the best for you! It’s a true nightmare.
skulltura
O M G that FRICKEN sucks dude, @op / thats sad and aweful, the tongue too!? Gorgeous pups. Boop those snoots.
TheSiskoIsOfBajor
If you're able, go to the local dental school for treatment! They have low cost clinics, and the students need training! I <3 my student
SometimesLucid2
Sorry for your floss.
dizzyderata
So sorry to hear that. Mox is a good girl!
ShibaSan
You can claim dental expenses on your taxes if it and your medical expenses exceed 7.5% of your gross annual income. It's something...
Quirky74747
If you don’t reach that level, in some states you can claim them regardless of level.
alisa2089
Dry socket is the WORST. I am so so sorry OP. :(
LasciviousHedgehog
Had one after an extraction that needed 3 different dentists to have a go pulling. Joked that the one who did it was now King of all England
noReallyIamPrincessBob
Easy to address though - rinse socket out & place sedative dressing, pain gone in about 15 minutes.
alisa2089
My surgeon used clove oil. Everything tasted like cloves for a couple weeks and the pain wasn’t gone 100%. :(

Tip: If you don't have insurance, look into dental discount cards and find a dentist who takes them, save 20 to 50%
unimportantname
PSA: Some FQHC's in the US have dental clinics. Work like this would NOT be done there, but they would have caught the issue earlier.
unimportantname
Cost is based on income on a sliding scale.
nobodygivesafuckaboutyou
I legit had the same thing happen with the nerve damage on the left side of my tongue. That was almost 10 years ago, still have the 1/
nobodygivesafuckaboutyou
Tingling in my tounge and loss of taste on that side. 2/2
Erinmelissa123024
Same here. It's horrible and I really hate living with it. The tingling and I can no longer eat spicy food or drink carbonated drinks.
ketro2099
closest dentist is 130 miles away...and insurance doesnt cover it
anyway188136
Thanks for reminding me to get a dentist appointment. Stuff like that is why I have my teeth ensured heavily.

No worries! I wasn't sure. I'm not a native speaker.
Dasnekones
I think it is madness that teeth are considered separate from healthcare in Sweden. It should be considered essential care.
elinveronicap
I pay about 120kr/month ($12) which covers all my dental costs. That could just as well come out of my taxes directly.

Same happened to me. Not as many lost teeth though. Bottom molars were impacted. Waited too long, one of my molars got killed in the process
KommSusserTod
Can't afford to see a dentist. I need probably close to 5k in work, but $13/hr ain't enough to pay rent, so health is a luxury item.

Welcome to America
Quirky74747
Dental school offers work at discounted rates.
garamasike
If you live near a dental school, this is a good option. Unfortunately there aren’t a ton of dental schools everywhere.
Quirky74747
True!
Potatoespotatoespotatoespotatoespotaosoupforeveryone1
When do you live that a cleaning is that cheap?! When I was trying to find a dentist and had no insurance it was $400.
TeachingClayGuy
As someone who didn't visit a dentist fo 10 years I feel you. But I wish basic health insurance covered dental.
schwhettyballs
I had dental insurance.. My wisdom teeth became impacted, insurance wouldn't cover bc it was a "specialist" to remove them. Got infected 1/2
schwhettyballs
Then got hospitalized bc of it. Almost died.. It was then that health not dental insurance covered it 2/2
Dentistman
Smart
schwhettyballs
I couldn't afford $2k for them to he removed surgically. So I guess so yeah.
Dentistman
Really, any dental surgical procedure should be classified as medical
schwhettyballs
Not how blue cross blue shield saw it. Oral surgeon was classified as a dental specialist just like an orthodontist.
2112eric5772
Don't lose hope! I had nerve damage after wisdom tooth surgery ; was told it wouldn't recover, but 8 months later it was fine.
theomni
It's expensive to be poor.

I'm going to go brush my teeth now...

Don't forget to put them under your pillow. (Tl;dr)
justtrustmeguys
Honestly I was thinking necklace or bracelet coz why the hell not

Or a set of knuckle dusters. That'd be pretty metal.

Kia ora. But, ooh, ease up there, big fella! Oi, oi, oi! *looks to the East, towards our "other" Tasmania, spots you there, gives a wave* ?
DangusStank
Dentist here, cavities normally don't hurt unless they are big. So if you are having a tooth ache, usually more than a filling will be neede
Lycanthian
Is dry socket more common in surgical extractions vs simple? I have to have a surgical extraction in a week and I’m terrified of dry socket
Dentistman
Nope. Smoking, diabetes, and not taking it easy will
HvpE
^^this. I tell patients "if you get a dry socket, ill treat you, but if you got a dry socket from smoking, I wont feel sorry for you"
Lycanthian
Luckily my dental issues are from being poor and American. I don’t smoke so that won’t contribute
Dentistman
I just tell them that it will hurt if they get a dry socket and it will cost more to fix. No need to share internal emotions
omfgitsmichael
I hadn’t been to the dentist in like only two years, but during that time I did enough damage to need to get 5 crowns. Cost me around $2k :/
ProfessionalPupperPetter
$2,000 for five crowns is a very good deal lol. Grounds usually are 800 bucks each
tinydog
boopityboopboop
Exactly the turmoil I’m experiencing reading this post. ARGHHHH.
12700CheeseGamer
I know this is not the point, but they let you keep the teeth!?! I specifically asked for mine and they wouldn’t give them to me
LateNightBunnyParty
I have mine in an old salt shaker. I freaked out my kid with them once, lol.
DragonWithUnfinishedProjects
I got to keep the two Wisdom teeth I had and one tooth that got infected from a bad old filling XD I have mutant teeth.
justinb04072718
Anything removed from your body is your property.
Kostkami
They should give them to you to prove that the procedure was necessary
12700CheeseGamer
And good luck with the payments. that really sucks, but get that taken care of when you can so you aren’t paying the man interest
justtrustmeguys
I paid out of my savings so no debt but now no savings either. And idk about elsewhere but you absolutely have the right to keep them in NZ
12700CheeseGamer
Well that’s good, I’m over in the US so could be different here
DoubleSunMoonMoon
In AU it was the same. I got them in a little jar, and had to drop them off at a dentist to dispose of them.
noReallyIamPrincessBob
You came in with them, you can leave with them.
wombatmcgee
They asked me if I wanted to keep mine after I was already drugged up so I said yes because I thought it would be funny for them to hand 1/
wombatmcgee
my mom, who had driven me there, a bag of my teeth. Ergo, I do have mine. /2
12700CheeseGamer
That is what I wanted to do, just to keep around as a prank
SavSta
I got to keep my wisdom teeth. I was alarmed at their size. I threw them away though.
HuskyBug
Awww. They wouldn’t let me keep mine either.
Jeanemon
My dentist said no coz he had to section mine out to try and avoid nerve damage. I wanted my teeth.
gregws
You just have to exclude the bit about wanting to make a sick necklace outbof them
justtrustmeguys
I was thinking knuckle dusters
DangusStank
Dentist here, it depends on the dentist. If they have major infections, not usually a good idea to keep them
12700CheeseGamer
I have no idea if this is normal, but my wisdom teeth were taken out as a precaution, but they had come through the gum straight (all 4)
DangusStank
Depends on if they developed at a normal angulation as well as how manageable they are to clean. Can cause issues later
Meebers
Wait, why not if major infection? For some reason I assume the infection would die out when the removed teeth dry out?
DangusStank
Some tooth infections have some pretty serious bacteria. They should die after being removed but could take awhile if abscess isn't torn 1)
DangusStank
And you can't really trust people not doing dumb things with those teeth so could potentially spread those bacteria 2)
Wrooster8
Hello fellow dentist! And also I've heard of people trying to sue for malpractice after putting the tooth back in the extracted socket
Imissmycats
Dentistry student here, in some universities they let us use human teeth for practice (expecially to get a feel for the pulp chamber).
DangusStank
Most schools do that so you can feel what real.teeth feel like. Dentists will collect them for the students
DangusStank
I've heard that as well but if you document giving them the tooth, I can't see that holding up in court
dizzyderata
MeowWoof
The really fucked up thing is that I went to Tianuna for $10k worth of dental work that was quoted $40k here. Anne I have dental insurance.
BARRIIICADEtv
Taiwan my dudes. Taiwan.. CHEAP, and AMAZING.
justtrustmeguys
We have universal healthcare. Except for teeth and eyes, because apparently eating and seeing are privilege.
iDumle
Same here in Denmark, tho some of it's subsidized, I have been advocating for free check ups for years, because it can prevent complications
lostinthoughts
Here in Austria dentists also charge significantly more (and not everything is covered in health care)
dizzyderata
What?!? That’s awful. Hope things get better for you.
SpartaGuss
Who? Come closer and let me gum your face ... David S. Pumpkins?
Xhristmas
Canadian?
vwyx
That "jawbone sticking out" thing happened to me, too. My oral surgeon missed it and tried to have me ride it out Christmas weekend before
vwyx
he could fix it.
2thless
Well he got his lingual Nerve damaged when they filled it down. It is usually just best to ride it out. Less risk
kaelykat
After pouring thousands of dollars into my teeth, I became disabled and could no longer afford dental care. Now, I have list most
kaelykat
And can't even afford to get them out. Being diabetic, this will likely be why I die, due to the constant infections.
krisiteenie56
Look up sliding scale dentists or dental schools. Also, see if any dental clinics happen in your area. They do them 1-2x a year near me. >
krisiteenie56
They offer reduced or even free services for people. Low income is priority too.
nothingtosomething
A lot of those places are shit holes and dentists do mediocre work.
kaelykat
Haven't heard any complaints about the local dentist s.
krisiteenie56
Not true at all. Maybe YOU had a bad experience with one but that's not the case in all places. Don't give false information please.
kaelykat
No dental schools anywhere near hear. The local clinic with a sliding fee still costs almost 200 for a removal and that is if no problems.
krisiteenie56
A sliding scale clinic should be based on your income. There are low income AND sliding scale clinics. Are you sure it's not a low income?
kaelykat
Positive. The scale there is based on income. It's still more than I can afford. To go in and get an xray is is 200+. That's before any 1/
kaelykat
come up. Also I would need oral surgery at this point and they don't offer sliding fees. At least not here.
kaelykat
There isn't anything I can do about it. Frustrating!
AslanTheGod
Pretty much in the same boat. Fucking sucks.
punxsutawney
Dude, this is beyond frustrating and sad. I'm so sorry this is happening to you.
DangusStank
Dentist here, go to the nearest dental school or find a sliding fee office
Fenrix
This. Sliding fee dentist saved my ass when I broke a tooth on a strip of bacon... Yeah. Bacon. Tooth had been a disaater for years.
kaelykat
No dental schools near me. Sliding fee office is still far more than I could afford now that I'm disabled and they don't do oral surgery.
DangusStank
Care credit is also an option. I know it's tough to find an office that can accommodate your needs
circlebreaker
Call the nearest one and try to arrange something. If you're embarrassed, try asking an advocate to get in touch with them (family/priest).
PUNKem733
I'm so sorry, and this reminds me to move the fuck out of this HORRIFYING country.
StarkRG
If you're disabled, do you not qualify for Social Security Disabilty Insurance?
hardlyfatal
Finding a dentist who takes Medicaid is nearly impossible. Though I do know of one in South Jersey. DM me if that's anywhere near you.
kaelykat
Thank you, but I live in Northern Maine.
FuzzyBunnyOnLSD
Medicaid doesn't pay for anything but cleanings and x-rays after the age of 21
DangusStank
Dentist here, I know medicaid varies by state but I'm pretty sure they normally cover extractions. I'd check with your dentist again
StarkRG
Oh, that is insane...
Scotia
Land of the free and home of the brave, where people die because of their teeth... It's fucking medieval over there smh
kaelykat
Well, being disabled is my problem. People on disability barely get enough to live on, let alone afford dental work.
Scotia
But being disabled shouldn't be a problem, full stop. With Universal health care here in UK (including dental) it makes zero difference
