David Reimer (1965-2004) was the victim of a botched circumcision, what was left of his penis was turned into a vagina and he was raised as a girl. It was thought that because "gender is a social construct" that if he was raised as a girl he would well... be a girl. This was wrong. He always felt as though he was in the wrong body and even went through a reverse sex change later in life, sometime after he learned the truth. He eventually killed himself due to many reasons, likely including being raised as the gender he didn't identify as, along with a lot of abuse by the doctor.

Plot twist: what if all the transgender people are part of similarly fucked up surgeries and we should change them back?
ImgursMostHated
I blame Dr. Money for this he was a quack and a sick man who used that poor kid as a fucking toy/lab rat
PoopFrosting
can't force someone to be what doesn't feel right, everyone involved with this should be ashamed of themselves
leaderlesslurker
I think they're saying gender roles and expectations are a social construct, if they didn't believe in gender they wouldn't transition.
kaitIin
Yes this. I view the term gender to refer to identity/societal roles whereas sex refers to genetic male or female.
kaitIin
And you can view your gender and sex as being at odds. Can't change your biological sex but can change gender.

The fact that we are letting emotion overcome science is dangerous
defineHarm

Thats not emotion that stupidity, why would we care that this guy died if not for emotion?
Suiagg
He's not saying we should stop feeling altogether, that'd be dangerous too, just not to get blinded with emotion and ignore facts
ImgursMostHated
When in history didn't we let emotions overcome science?
Swordrager
Doesn't make it less dangerous.
tinnerz58
And when in history was that not dangerous?

So, your argument against transgender is someone who was forced to live as the gender -which didn't match the one in their head-?
GoldenSour2
I think you misunderstand, I'm pro transgender and believe it's not a social or environmental thing, trans are born trans.

My apologies - I'm used to seeing variations of this argument coming from the anti side and just made an ass out of umptions
JustFeedMePieDammit
Same same. Hence my sarcastic reply to the post
GoldenSour2
Ah, fair enough, I actually saw a anti trans saying "gender is a social concept therfore transgender is a social/environmental thing"
GoldenSour2
This post is a response to that
TheLastCthulhuCultist
This is rather true. Gender is predicated upon hormones. Testosterone encourages a more physically dominant build. Male, basically.
kaitIin
Hormones affect secondary sex characteristics but a man with low T is not suddenly going to wish to become a woman.
kaitIin
Women with low estrogen & high T are going to experience a lot of issues, sure, but not wish to become a man. These imbalances are v common.
kaitIin
I'm not anti-trans and not trying to come across that way. I just believe there is way more to it than "hormone imbalances."
GoldenSour2
Yep and when there's a mix up in the hormones you get transgendered people.
TheLastCthulhuCultist
Very true. But here's the thing. Due to the culture of "Accept, never question" we cannot study them and fix them, whether true gender swap
TheLastCthulhuCultist
or something else. Medication, hormone therapy, etc. It's funny how they have fucked themselves.
GoldenSour2
I believe sex change to be the best treatment for most cases, currently, however there does need to be a lot more research into it, I think.
TheLastCthulhuCultist
Actually, it isn't. From what I have read, suicide rates go up post surgery.
GoldenSour2
I think some of that is attributed to how many of them are treated not so nicely by a lot of people. But like I said more research.
