I am one with the force, the force is one with me
slypea
it absorbs blaster fire only stunning troopers
CaptainRedHook
They are there to look intimidating and make troopers feel tough. But the empire doesn't give a shit if they live or die, it's about numbers
vidmagnuson
You see it protect them from a few of their own shots. It's likely built to insulate them from friendly fire.
supersomatic
Its almost like the entire universe is nothing but deus ex machinas, and is actually really badly written :O
DarkSock
The plastiod "armor" dissipates energy, to protect the wearer from glancing blaster bolts. Soak 'em in a bacta tank & back to the fight
yomancs
Agreed I'd like to see armor be effective in the movies

Yup, storm troopers were chromed on the outside, rusted on the inside
TheStuffMemesAreMadeOf
I think there main purpose is so the rebels can wear them as a disguise.
JackBriscoe
I mean the whole rogue one film is showing you why there is a weak spot in the Death Star. The second one wasn't finished.
So that could have been ok. The armour though yeah that's pointless, but sounds right from a procurement department but the cheap shit
BlastTheStrongestHero
Perhaps they are just environment suits? Or the empire just doesn't care. "Just give em something to make them think they're safe."
sentx
Vaguely remember one of the new quests for money episodes, someone said they can't filter poison gas. Death by a civilian committee

That's IP man though. The only person who stood somewhat of a chance was Mike Tyson in IP Man 3. Don't cut your onions while watching it.
razetherunner
THAT'S WHY HE LOOKED SO FAMILIAR!

They answer this in ANH, Luke clearly says "I can't see a thing in this helmet"
SittinHerePoopin
What's this star wars everybody keeps talking about?
waffleresidence
Fun fact, the armor is made to save the trooper and mostly does, but getting thrown they way they do I imagine getting knocked out is easy.
harbingerjo
Due to the cost of the Death Star (labor strike, change orders, and the rising cost of materials), troopers were issued plastic armor.
JoeyJannik
Mostly because he's Donnie Yen.. it's like, Donnie Money.. jeez watch Iron Monkey.
Oddlyspecificreference
Just finished reading the SW universe book soldier for the empire and in that they say it allows them to regulate breathing, hide their 1/2
own fear from the enemy. Whilst being a symbol of fear (like batman) and has built in comms, lights and displaying tactical information.
halborski
2/2 embarrassing tattoos, and it has a built in vape pen.
historyiscooliguess
Well if rogue one is anything to go by, it appears that all of their engineers are literally traitors.
moonsaves
Actually, a blunt weapon is the most effective thing against armour. Medieval battles between plate mail-decked combatants became (1/2)
bludgeoning matches to see who could knock out/concuss the other first inside of their armour. (2/2)
weedbratton
Is there any material now that would dominate back then? Like if u had to go back in time and fight what would u pick
DrenLithear
Armor doesn't stop concussive force, helmet or no you can get knocked out. Also the empire did cheap mass produced equipment. (1)
Where as the new order put a bigger emphasis on training and quality equipment. Less numbers to work with so opted for better quality .
katiethejedi
I believe the armor is mainly engineered to protect against lasers shot from enemy blasters. Kinda like a bullet-proof vests. But for lasers
Naiirita
technically blasters, not lasers. they shot plasma.
DMQ88
1: Bullet weapons used to be the thing, then armor like that got developed. Basically made bullets useless. 2: Still saved most clones+
...stormtroopers from instant death when a blaster bolt hit them. Most went down from the pain and concussive force of the blast.
... And could later return to combat.
hitshappens
The fucking thermal exhaust port was a necessity, and it was heavily guarded. Luke made an impossible shot using the force.

Military Grade = Lowest Bidder for Government Contract. Remember that when you're jumping out of a perfectly good C-130.
MinorClarification
Lowest bidder on a project with the highest quality standards. Military standards and tolerances are very difficult to meet.
LrrrRulerOfOmicronPerseiAte
Lowest bidder on the 130 too tho.
Knukails
I only jump from the finest of C-17s but I'll take a helo jump as consolation
barrocoyote
Armor won't stop you from getting concussed. Also I think in this movie you see the armor deflecting lasers when one guy is used as a shield
Rynestrm
Finn says the helmets filter out smoke. I guess that's all they can do
darthsithh
Yes, but those are the upgraded First Order suits, not classic Imperial. Even FO TIEs' had life support, 2nd gunner.
somenerandom
2/2 way they are to hide the troopers' fear from the enemy, and turn them into a symbol. Protection really isn't the main priority,
They regulate air, temperature, filter out toxins, offer coms, lights and I'm sure something else I'm missing. They're also designed the 1/2
Big Mac
AdmiralSnackbarItsASnack
Finn says they don't filter out toxins though
I'm sure they used to in some SW book I read a while back, but that may no longer be canon
DeputyRageMode
Most troopers you see on the ground aren't dead just knocked out from the force of the blast. The rebels tho. There mostly dead.
BoredFinn
and there is plot armor
pyrrhlis
Exactly. Clone armor was either your dead or your not. Imperial armor is designed to disperse impacts, meaning they get knocked out instead.

If you watch how shit literally explodes when blasters hit things in the background, the armor seems to work pretty well.

1 Yup, the trooper's armour is mostly to deflect the energy of a blaster shot to the outside of the armour, allowing them to survive though
2 grievously wounded. What you don't see is the rebel with no armour with a hole you can look through in their chest. Also not a stick
3 but a staff made for combat. The force of the blow still goes through the armour, it just absorbs some of it. That's what armour does.
They're sleeping... they get tired from all the fighting and need a nap. Some go to a farm, with Mr. Fishy & Bruce Wayne's parents
SalisburyShuffle
They go sleep, just like me. And they wake up just like me. Usually with a boner. I call it the bat signal

Plus helmets can't actually protect against concussions not matter how hard they are
Sinmiedo1931
Dude, he's hitting him with a wooden stick. The helmets and body armor should at least protect against that.
pres2pond
They're supposed to be soft on the inside to soften the blow.
Doesn't matter. No matter how good a football helmet is, you'll still get a concussion because the brain moves inside the skull.
But this is in the context of being hit on the head with a stick, not hitting something while running.
