If a person shots my harmless dog, I’d assume they are unsafe and since they have a firearm a danger to myself and my family and would shot them out of fear of our lives that they would shot us next, since they are clearly unhinged. I’m sure I’d go to jail for life, but it sure seems like a defensible position…except cops are (incorrectly) untouchable.

In my country (in Europe) you had to do a literal high school for cops that lasted 4 years. The down side was you became a cop at 18. They changed that to 2 years, but it's no longer a high school. It's now a 2-year collage programme. Takes less time and is harder, but the officers are more mature.

No, most cops are people that love authority and having power over people. They think that being a cop gives the absolute power and they can do anything. The good ones are few and far between and are usually ostracized by the rest of their department. Pets are classified as property. So you can defend your pets as far as "reasonably" needed... which for property does not include death. So killing them would be illegal, but attacking to prevent harm, is not depending on how far you go. Mostly because you can only go as far as needed to stop them... this was a very depressing thing to look up
