Mozambique Drill is suggested for thoroughness, two in the chest, one in the head. It'll be used against you at trial but if the goal is immediate safety it's hard to beat.

A friend of mine who went through handgun safety training relayed some advice from their (insane ultraconservative) instructor: always keep shooting until they're on the ground. You want to make sure they're dead before they're horizontal, because it's a lot harder to get away with shooting someone when they're already laid out. He was talking about how to deal with "ay-rabs", but I figure the idea applies just as well here.

Most common/modern advice is until the threat is ended. Laying down trying to grab their knife? Still a potential threat. Running away holding a knife? May not legally be a good shoot in your state. Gotta know your local laws as part of your firearm training 👍

I think in Tom Clancy's book about the Navy Seals he talks about their weapons having a setting for a 3-round burst with one pull. Don't know if that was an actual thing.

3-round burst is a setting between semi (one shot per pull) and full auto on a lot of firearms. Now it's just a holdover from previous generations' thinking on warfare (they keep these settings rather than change the manufacturing), and it's really not that useful. I don't think I ever even set my rifle to burst my entire time in service.

This isn't the least bit surprising. A brand new design for a brand new weapon is bound to have a multitude of issues before being finalized, and it will have numerous tweaks and updates over the course of its use. The M4 we currently use is the result of literal decades of research, design changes, and active use. I would take this article with a grain of salt as far as 'issues for the troops' are concerned. Troops are also generally biased against anything new to begin with.

I also have to point out that the article is suspect almost immediately, as it notes that the images and such are taking place at 'Fort Benning, GA,' which isn't a thing anymore. It was renamed to Fort Moore. It comes off as a lapse in their reporting or journalistic integrity.
