I didn't own the first Pixel, but I can say it's a huge improvement over the Motorola Turbo 2 and is IMHO better than the Samsung Galaxy.

Check the version of the app you are running. I'm using 3.5.2.6496 on my Google Pixel 2 XL and am not having that issue.
