There are no repercussions for bad work, or not meeting production goals, and there is no reward for going the extra mile, or providing accurate work. Everyone is treated the same. Everyone gets the same bonus. There are no raises or promotions. Why work your ass off for a company if they just don't give a flying fuck? Why care if they clearly don't. After two years of pushing myself, saving the company upwards of a million dollars, assisting supervisors, managers, and directors with special projects, watching shitty workers get positions over me because they kiss ass and play the game, and getting walked all over, I'm done. These companies that say they want "go-getters" and "team players" and "work ethic" and "attention to detail"? It's all a lie.

Sounds like my brothers job. He is looking for new things and sounds like my old job. I moved on as well. It's was the best decision I made

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm hitting that wall too, OP. I think we both need new gigs.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sounds like my job. They want you to bust your ass to get just 4/5 on your year end review and that's about it.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Peer grouping. Worst thing ever created. "The best worst person"

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

OP has upper management written all over him. I'm sure the Bob's would agree.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

It's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care

That's why I quit my last job

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How are your tps reports?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Want to get a promotion: stay there long enough. Don't want to get fired? Do the bare minimum.

Spent 23 years in an industry like yours The fuckups moved up, no merit based reward system. Took my 401K and moved on, never looked back.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

It's like Op found what retail it's all about.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is why we job hop. You give them two years. No improvement? Use your 'experience' to get a better job. Rinse, wash, repeat.

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Are you in the Army? This sounds like the Army.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 4

Or the Navy. Probably all the services.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Sounds like me at work. Didn't realize how much I hate people until I worked in retail.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I gave up ambition a long time ago. I just want my paycheck and to be left alone in my free time.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Gotta weigh your options on having a personality inside or outsode of work

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

like 99% of other jobs

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I got my first ever job on the 18th March. (Weekends and holidays only). So far I love it. I work in a theme park. No soul-crushing here :)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This. Used to work my ass off to do more while all the others kept doing all the minimum

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Yup, that's how it is here. And working my ass off is my norm, so they've come to expect this from me.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

if you're the smartest person in the room you're in the wrong room or shud be being paid 2 b there. same rule applies here w/ work ethic.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's the worst.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Same. Did some extra work last summer and kept playing the game of "let's do the absolute minimum until someones notice it"

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I got very good at that game

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I hate it though. It just isn't me to not try, you know? But it's less stress than overworking myself with no reward

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's my student job and I'll be gone soon(hopefully),so I don't really care that much anymore

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have an honest conversation with your boss. What you see and what he sees may be different. Also he may not know you want to move up.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

aka why communism doesn't work

9 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 8

Except this shows why capitalism doesn't work as everyone was working towards their own self interest rather than for the group

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 8

why would anyone work for the group if doing so wasn't in their own self interest? cui bono?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

*socialism. communism is the part where you abandon large states in favour of small, self governed villages.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 5

ether way there's a lot of red flags

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Better red than dead comrade

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

Send this to the upper management anomalously (Take out the two year part) @OP. It really makes a difference.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

I wonder if it would though. It's a pretty crappy company. Went to HR with a problem once, had the head of HR yelling at me because I

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

didn't understand what he was trying to explain. Head of HR yelling at an employee over a question about benefits? Yeah...

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

If the upper management does not take it seriously, then you need to start playing their game (Kissing ass) or start finding a better place

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I work in management and we take anything that is "demotivatig" very seriously.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

by firing the person (s) who complained?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have you considered that your interpersonal skills might be an issue? 'playing the game is often how people without those skills refer to1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

People who have them. Your technical skills aren't worth shot if you're so socially lacking that you're a drain.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'd not think that referring to it as "playing the game" indicates lack of social skills in and of itself. I know way too many people with-

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd agree but it does seem inequitable that those without technical skills can still get on if they kiss ass.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I learnt this years ago, HR exists to protect the company from the employee not the other way around

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

THIS ^^^ HR is not your friend, they are your enemy. And if you're HR, you're your own enemy.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As HR, this is my typical day: v

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah, and I fucking work there too.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Chuck?... is that you?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're not going to find many corporate jobs that aren't like this.

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

That's what I'm being told. I guess I just don't get why it has to be that way

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Come to the non-profit side. Pay can be shit but benefits are good. My company thanks everyone constantly.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

People enjoy having their ass kissed. If you want to move up, you have to learn to kiss ass and network. It's a shitty part of corporate life.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

LOL stfu don't tell everyone the world's secrets

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I didn't tell anyone HOW to kiss ass. That's still our little secret. v

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Either work for yourself or get out of the corp 9to5, otherwise you gotta learn to play the game. It sucks but it's everywhere.

Did you just assume OP's gender?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Oh shit I just triggered myself.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What's a quarter booth

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

My understanding is that it's a booth with a screen where you pay with coins (25ยข here) to watch porn. But I'm not American , what do I know

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've seen them in video games before but there it was basically the same stuff you get at a strip club so I don't see a point.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mop boy is the worst job at a porno quarter booth. I am not missing my old job at Show World

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have you ever tried to clean splooge out of the coin mech? No? Didn't think so.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They are not all like that. It looks like it's time for you to move on.

9 years ago | Likes 572 Dislikes 5

Happiness is key to life. Money is great, but your sanity is better.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed. My new job has a reward system based on kudos from your coworkers.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The problem is that op has already lost passion. It would take an incredible company to bring that back.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is right, or setup your own company

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You know, this confession bear sounds real similar to communism.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

My company just sent two back of house worker guys to Germany beer tasting, some managers to New York, and some others to London as rewards.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@op Remember the words of Peter Gibbons: my only real motivation is not to be hassled; that, and the fear of losing my job. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

2/2 But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Some places are worse. They have double standards where some people get away with doing next to nothing (unless count ass kissing), and 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

While others go the extra mile and get no recognition - only that we don't know how to "sell ourselves" 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Of course, there also may be contract work (depending on your field).

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Well, my employer is pretty good as far as I can tell. But I don't know what they're hiring for now. Not much use if you're not in WI or ME.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I am in Alberta Canada. Right now I am just lucky to get a job. Overnight, part-time at a grocery store. McDonald's didn't even call back.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, that's shitty. I don't think there's a shortage of unskilled labor *anywhere*. To thrive, you must know how to do *something* special.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

But even if you do, it's no guarantee of an easy search.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This! Find a job you like with a wage you can live with. I would love to make the money I used to, but I am damn happier with my current job

9 years ago | Likes 96 Dislikes 0

Took a 25% pay cut, but am so much happier at my new job. The stress level us WAY down, and they appreciate my work.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I work at Walmart, not the best pay starting off, but I got promoted because I did my supervisors job on his days off w/o being asked 1/3

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

And I am planning on doing the manager program in about a year once my life is calmed down some, it's all up to you I've found. Also it 2/3

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Was supposed to be 1/2, not 1/3, but having to correct that made it 3 anyway

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Most jobs ARE like that. Finding a job that WILL incentivize upward behavior is more difficult.

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 2

They'll definitely be that way if they're unionized. Sure you get higher pay but everyone is equal and it's hard to fire bad workers.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

These issues are rife in non-unionised companies, too.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

True I was just pointing out the especially bad ones.
