Last Exile
The story is set on the fictional world of Prester, where its inhabitants use aerial vehicles known as vanships as a means of transportation. On this world which is divided in eternal conflict between the nations of Anatoray and Disith, sky couriers Claus Valca and Lavie Head must deliver a girl who holds the key to uniting the two factions. It's VERY steampunk heavy in terms of architecture and technology. Be ready for some early-mid 2000s CGI as well. The characters are great, the world building is really cool, the music is fantastic. Solid adventure. I didn't like the sequel series that came out a couple years ago however.

Eureka Seven
Set in 12500 a whole 10000 years after humanity made a mass exodus from Earth because of alien life form invasion. The plot revolves around Renton Thurston, a 14 year old living a normal life until he discovers a mysterious girl and her robot or some shit. Look almost everything I can say about this show's plot is generic as hell but just trust me it's really good if only kinda melodramatic and sometimes dumb. If you like mechs, sky surfing, and mechs sky surfing you'll like this one. Also awkward teen romance.

FLCL
My favorite anime of all time. This 6 episode mini-series is a coming of age story with robots and aliens. It's high octane, over the top and stylish as hell. Naota is a 6th grader living in a small Japanese town when he is suddenly run over by an insane woman in a Vespa moped. She then proceeds to pull a robot out of his head later that episode. The synopsis sounds like an acid trip and watching the show you'll probably ask yourself what the hell is going on? constantly but it's all solid and makes sense on multiple viewings. This is Gainax at their finest and I can't wait for the 2 seasons commissioned by Adult Swim. Also it has an amazing soundtrack by one of my favorite Japanese bands: The Pillows.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Where the hell do you even start with a series like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure? It's a literal epic tale of the Joestar family and their generations long battles with the forces of evil. It's a cultural icon that's spawned so many memes that just a single whiff of a reference is itself a reference. It's a relentless showcase of masculinity and bravado. It's a weird as fuck, some would say bizarre, globe trotting adventure like no other. It's Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Watch the first 3 episodes of the 2012 adaptation to just see how insane this show is. Trust me there's really nothing else quite like it.

My Hero Academia
Probably the most recent entry on this list. Set on Earth generations after humanity began manifesting random superpowers known as "quirks." From flight to shape-shifting to super strength roughly 90% of the population has a quirk and given rise to Superhero as an actual job title. Izuku Midoriya is one of the few human born without a quirk, which is a problem because he desperately wants to be a pro-hero more than anything in the world. His hopes seem pretty bleak until one day he meets someone he never thought he would. This series is ongoing and as it's based on an also ongoing manga prepare to not have closure for a long while. Still it's a fantastic series and the first season alone is good enough to be its own self-contained story. I love it to bits. Also after watching it you'll have a weird thing about frogs.

Mob Psycho 100
Mob is a shy and quiet middle school boy. He has a crush on the cutest girl in school, doesn't have the best grade, isn't good at sports oh and he's possibly the world's most powerful psychic. This 12 episode series from One the writer of One Punch Man is a unique take on the psychic warriors genre of action anime. It's far and away more important that we understand Mob as a character and it's his interactions with those around him that truly make this show shine. Top that with gorgeous animation, directing and a killer soundtrack and you have a winner. You'll find Mob Psycho 100 on Crunchyroll

One Punch Man
SPEAKING of WanPanMan the smash hit of last year follows Saitama, a hero-for-hobby that trained so hard to be the strongest that he went bald in the process. Saitama is the strongest hero in the world being able to kill (probably) any enemy with a single punch. This strength becomes a curse however in that Saitama is incredibly unhappy with his limitless power. No fame or fun in one sided battles and the general dissatisfaction of a lack of challenge. Like Mob Psycho, One Punch Man is more comedy/character study than straight action (though the action is GREAT). Honestly, you've probably already watched this show as it's the closest an anime has come aside from Attack on Titan in the past few years to be considered mainstream in the West. It's like 12 episodes and on Netflix check it out

Cowboy Bebop
I'm legally obligated to include this because it's a masterpiece. Space bounty hunters, heavy Western influences, stylish as hell, excellent action choreography, sweet as hell characters, amazing soundtrack, it's a near 10/10 and if you're new to anime this is one you HAVE to watch. I believe it's on Hulu

Samurai Champloo
Samurais and hip hop. Champloo is an Okinawan dish that literally translates to "something mixed" both in the fact it's a stir fry and also in Okinawa's American, Japanese and native Okinawan cultural blend. In other words Samurai Champloo is delicious. Directed by Cowboy Bebop director Shinichirō Watanabe this stylized take on Edo-Period Japan follows an offbeat trio searching for a "samurai who smells of sunflowers" and their miscellaneous mis-adventures. It's super slick, really funny, and has a soundtrack by the late Japanese hip hop legend Nujabes.

Read or Die (A.K.A. R.O.D. for the 3 ep movie and R.O.D The TV for the sequel TV series)
Read or Die the OVA follows Yomiko Readman (which btw Yomiko translates to reading child/girl) A.K.A. "The Paper" an agent of a secret British task force that combats and secures people with powers. Yomiko herself is a "paper master" someone who can manipulate paper as they see fit and use them as weapons. The OVA is OK but I REALLY like the series R.O.D. The TV which follows The Paper Sisters a private detective trio of paper masters in their various cases. Eventually these two groups intersect and things get cray-zee. It's not perfect and it might even be worse than I'm remembering but it still hold a special place in my heart.

Kill la Kill
This show was hard to include not because it's not great but because it's hard to find a gif that won't get this post deleted. Kill la Kill follows Ryuko Matoi, a new transfer student at the bizarre and overly militarized Honnouji Academy. At this strange place students are ranked and gifted with powerful clothing that grants them abilities. Ryuko is searching for the owner of half of the scissor-shaped blade that killed her father. Kyruin Satsuki, the leader of the student council and effectively head of Honnouji Academy is her best bet at finding out who killed her dad. So here's the deal with Kill la Kill which you kind of have to know going in. It's crazy good, highly stylized, made by Studio Trigger which are vets from FLCL's Gainax team. The kicker is that Ryuko receives a powerful outfit herself which gives her amazing strength and speed but... she's like... 80% naked wearing it. It's on Netflix if you're curious. If you're not ashamed of seeing some cartoon butts and boobs in a PG-13 way then I highly recommend it.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
I know I have a lot of Gainax shows on here already shut up. TTGL is a legend in the anime world. Set on an Earth like planet where humans have been driven underground by mech riding beastmen the plot revolves around Simon and Kamina, two young boys who dream of one day being able to see the surface again. Kamina does anyway, Simon is perfectly content drilling his days away searching for treasure and artifacts which he does indeed find... a small pilot-able mech head. This show is an adventure that'll take you to places you'll never expect and keeps the twists coming. It easily ranks in many people's Top 3 lists.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is on Netflix

RWBY
I know what you're thinking "Hey wait a minute that's a western produced web-series from Rooster Teeth not anime at all!" Well shove some pocky in your fat stupid gutterwhole and shut the fuck up for a second. I'm one of those neo-weebs that doesn't believe anime has to be restricted to Japan produced and it's more of an artistic style. RWBY starts off sloppy and low budget and gets pretty darn good which for a 6-15 minute per episode long web series you can watch for free on youtube that's pretty neat. If you don't mind some slightly annoying voice acting then I recommend you check it out as the 5th season just started and it's gotten pretty darn interesting.

Avatar: The Last Airbender
Speaking of fake anime bullshit here's one of the best western cartoons ever made that's heavily influenced by anime and Asian martial arts films. Avatar takes place on Pandora a planet far from Earth which houses a valuable resource known as unobtanium... wait.... it's about 4 nations of element bending people being in a hundred year war after the disappearance of the "Avatar" the Dali Llama-esque representation of harmony and peace. Turns out it's some bald kid that got frozen and found 100 years later and also the ruthless fire nation is after him. Excellent animation, world building, and character development elevate this 3 season series to legendary status and if you care even a little about animation you should watch this and possibly the sequel Legend of Korra as well.

Ghost in the Shell
Masamune Shirow's iconic manga turned movie is one of the greatest anime films ever made. It also has a sequel I never watched and 3 seasons of anime series. Set in Tokyo in the Mid-Twenty-First Century the series revolves around Major Motoko Kusanagi a synthetic "full-body prosthesis" augmented-cybernetic human employed as the field commander of Public Security Section 9, a fictional law-enforcement division of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission. The series heavily deals with humanity and augmentation. It's highly philosophical and also has a lot of geopolitical talk. With that said it also showcases some of the best action out there. If you like your action to have some brains (be they human or cyborg) then this movie/show is for you. Just avoid the live action remake with Scarlett Johansson.

No doubt I'm forgetting something but that's it for now BYE~
Also here's some Romantic/Comedy anime I enjoyed as well

YES! I was so happy when funimation picked up the license and starting selling dvds and blurays. Snagged that immediately.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wrong.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I couldn't stand the characterization of the main character. Couldn't make it past the third episode because of him :|

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

IIRC he gets better, but slowly. Then the last few episodes are pretty redeeming.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hrm. That 'slowly' isn't very enticing, sadly :/

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unlike most shonen protags, he gets the "l Love You" line out pretty early on. Only to get cockblocked by her kids.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah, i got about that far, then he said something that just made me turn off the show in disgust in a "oh for fuck's sake" fashion :P

Yea the ending was a bit underwhelming lol

Samurai Champloo and Evangelion are my only 10/10s. Such great animes

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mine too! And Gundam Seed lol

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Where can I watch NGE? I saw it on Toonami once I think but ordering it is expensive

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Try solarmoviez.to they have all of them. Make sure you have adblock on though cause it's not a very legal site and it's got tons of pop ups

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Than you’ll love Cowboy Bebop who was made by the same studio.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Down for life on Samurai Champloo and decided to try Bebop. By ep4-5 I didn't have slightest clue what it was about and didn't care; boring.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

It gets better as it starts to get into the characters backgrounds. But if you didn’t enjoy the first few than you probably won’t enjoy it.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They're totally different things. Bebop is a masterpiece of story telling, Champloo is a masterpiece of animation and style.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I haven't seen any stories angles retold so well. The way you get to piece together the puzzle of events almost feels like a telltale game.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This show needs another dead on so badly

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The anime covered (more than) the good part. The novels only go downhill from there.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The anime covered 3 of 22 volumes. They could always do more and improve on it

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd honestly settle for an American blu ray set that doesn't cost $800. Freaking Aniplex...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Okay I would take that for any aniplex dvd. 100 for 6 episodes of erased is insane.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't give a shit if you're neo-whatever, western stuff isn't anime, it's cartoons. Using a label wrong isn't justified by being stupid.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Still isn't anime

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What do you like so much about it? I enjoyed watching it enough to finish it, but wouldn't watch it again (love the OST though). Im curious!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You know, I was actually thinking about that. The fight scenes are just incredible and the story is new and refreshing, but I think the

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

reason I keep coming back is because of the characters. They get beaten down and thrashed around but they never give up. I guess sometimes I

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

need that kind of inspiration, you know?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I understand. I'll admit I too got caught up in the "JUST WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK WE ARE?!" but, while it was good, it wasn't 1/?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I felt the pain deeply during that episode that flips the first arc. Just so much pain over everything that happened.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

you forgot hunter X hunter (2011)

1st: I'm really surprised I never see BERSERK in these anime lists.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Depends on whether you mean the original berserk or the new one. The animation in the new one is marmite for people either love it or hateit

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

secretly EVERY Berserk fan watches the new show too but quietly hates lol. Berserk in general 90s series and the movies

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2nd: I wish there could be more of Cowboy Bebop

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Did you see thCB movie Knocking On Heavens Door?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No not yet :O will check it out :)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because Berserk is pretty cursed in the anime department

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The original show was great

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

only if you judged the animation by the standards of when it was made. if you compare it to 2005, it looks pretty bad.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean you could say the same thing with most 90s anime but the writing is still solid and the animation is enjoyable

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Check s.CRY.ed

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

idk what it was but I hated that show when it would come on. I should give it another shot though

That final fight between the two main guys is just badass.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I think the appeal is that it isn't just limitless bullshit that a lot of Shounen turns into (BNHA has a heavy emphasis on the fact that 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

life isn't fair and, while you can strive to go beyond, ultimately everyone has limitations). 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It doesnt do any tropes or archetypes at all! Thats why I got sick of Shonen. Its really good with the right amount of ridiculous.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It DOES do the whole “characters have an entire soliloquy while moving very fast towards something with action lines around their face”thing

8 years ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 2

Really, it does all the tropes and archetypes, but it invented them so they're way more subtle

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ghost in the Shell is in there as a franchise.

Mushishi?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love mushishi. I always hope there's gonna be a new season

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just wanted to check that you know there are 2 seasons. Did you watch the second? Mushishi is a favorite; I wish more people knew about it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, I think I enjoyed the second season more than the first one. My favorite episode is the the about the boy who would wait for lightning

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always enjoyed episodes with him interacting with Tanyuu. But I think the girl who had fallen down the well is one of my favorites S2 Ep16

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you didn't know Netflix has a ghost in the shell prequel series. Pretty good but it seems to have stopped at three episodes

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think you mean Arise, which isnt a series, but OVA's of about an hour each, there are 4

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do. I could never find the fourth one.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

HunterxHunter is a sweet one too. Props for including RWBY

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'll pass; I'd rather not watch THAT scene again.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was JUST about to mention this lol.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

FMA:B is one of my favourites. And Death Note!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well I'll just put my synopsis here: FMA is about the Elric brothers Alphonse and Edward. 2 alchemists who after committing a taboo lose 1/?

8 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 5

their bodies to a botched reincarnation ritual. They then join the military police and go on a grand adventure to find the Philosopher's 2/3

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 3

Stone, a fabled item said to enhance alchemy and maybe fix their bodies.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 2

btw FMA Brotherhood is the same plot as FMA but partway through they branch off severely because the anime got ahead of the manga. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

Fma brotherhood followers the manga and is 100 times better than fma

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Brotherhood is the author's intended 2nd half while FMA original is stuff they had to make up (still good though) 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

not action

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck yes!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And you forgot Planetes

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You can't forget something you haven't watched

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In that case, you should check it out. I'm not a big fan of anime, but I like Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Ghost in the Shell, and Planetes.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

then you totally should :p Planetes is great, though I would not classify it as Action/Adventure

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would just suggest the Brotherood version though :p also warning on Gurren Lagan second season as there's a complete change in tone

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a good change

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah but a pretty brutal and sudden one.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like brotherhood better for character development but the first one has the better villain and a little darker. Ed's not as clueless

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The villain (and plot surrounding it) was exactly thing i hated about the first FMA, felt so weak and anticlimatic to me, fma:b ftw!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To me brotherhood was standard take over everything. The original was a villain with a bit more depth. Protecting humanity from the stone.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But to each their own. Brotherhood is more complete as an anime.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You forgot hunter x hunter i think. And sorry but i don't know why i can't see anime with mecha droid or robot..

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You should try Eureka seven anyway, I really disliked gundam/mecha outside of the games, but that one gets a pass. + The series might go on.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Haven't watched it

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

do yourself a favor and get ready for about a week of fucking amazing binge-watching. just watch it. please. https://imgur.com/r0GQA0j

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

their is two time the episode, it was drawn in 1996 something like that, and remastered in 2012 something like that (story change a bit) 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

but the story is really interesting and funny and i really wanted to find a show like that 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If I had to describe it, kind of like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure did a Dragonball Z fusion with Pokèmon. Enjoyably Weird.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

hunter x hunter as well imo and maybe even Toriko

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

toriko is really childish... hunter x hunter is really cool and less childish in the last arc with the chimera

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

toriko is good clean fun and imaginative in weird delicious ways :D

TRIGUNNNNNNNNNN

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I never really watched Trigun and I didn't include standalone films in the list or else I'd be here all day

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

PEACE and LOVE!!!!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you love CBebop you'd love Trigun, give it a while to get SERIOUS cause it starts off rather comical, but shines most when it's dramatic

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Trigun is 24 bucks on Amazon. Well worth the watch. A gunslinger who won't kill anyone but it's also the best shot in the world. Westernish

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was in netflix for a while, not sure about that anymore

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

how about redline?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TRIGUN! NOW!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea there are alot of pretty stunning anime films out there. Trigun is pretty cool, somewhat like bebop with the western influence

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Trigun is like a combination of bebop, one punch man, and samurai champloo. At least that's how I see it. It's one of my favorites a

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And was going to point out how I never see it on any of these best anime lists

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Trigun is a bit slow in the beginning but it kicks off after episode 13 and will turn into one of your favorites

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is truth ViolantVibrator

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You also forgot Neon Genesis: Evangelion, too. Fuck the Toonami bullshit, you can go deeper.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"you can go deeper" *suggests the most surface level mecha show ever made* :P

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you like mecha animes but don't want mechas, watch Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Surface" level would be Macross or Gundam. Calling Eva "surface level" is showing your ass, OP. I'm talking OG Eva, too... VHS Eva.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it's not a different show on VHS... Evangelion is incredibly mainstream especially in Japan.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Far less mainstream than about half of your list. And popularity doesn't make it surface level. It's recent incarnations do. OG VHS (1/2)
