Why are western Australians called Sandgropers?
The Insect: The name comes from the native Sandgroper insect, a burrowing creature that "breaststrokes" through sand and lives underground, leaving distinct trails.
The Sand: Western Australia has extensive sandy areas, especially inland, and the nickname reflects this environment.
The Gold Rush: During the gold rushes, prospectors (or "gropers") would dig and sift through the sand for gold, further solidifying the "sand-groping" association with the state and its people
