This is the closest I'll get to posting a selfie on here. Merry Christmas from a Sandgroper

Dec 25, 2025 2:41 AM

Why are western Australians called Sandgropers?
The Insect: The name comes from the native Sandgroper insect, a burrowing creature that "breaststrokes" through sand and lives underground, leaving distinct trails.

The Sand: Western Australia has extensive sandy areas, especially inland, and the nickname reflects this environment.
The Gold Rush: During the gold rushes, prospectors (or "gropers") would dig and sift through the sand for gold, further solidifying the "sand-groping" association with the state and its people

And a belated merry Christmas to you from a cockroach

Lol, thank you. I also lived in NSW from the mid '80s till 2002 anyway, so I guess I'm a bit of a mixture
