Don’t smoke. Lost half my family that way. Cancer is not a fun way to die

Y'all didn't watch the whole thing did you..

The whole speech is brilliant. Worth a watch. Unfortunately I don’t have the link, but googling „English speeches“ and his name should do the trick.

When you forgot to grow out of debate club.

But smoking is awesome. I don't smoke much (maybe 2-3 a day) and always away from others/downwind. But goddamn I love it. I get why others hate it, I do. But I'd argue my pack a week habit is doing much less damage than others' 18hr a day phone/social media addiction. And SM is far more dangerous to all of us than my few cigs are - so stfu and let me have my thing

FAIL. Didn't specify if he was referring to Type 1 (genetic) or Type 2 (lifestyle) diabetes.

The power of a good presentation is that even dumb people can understand it. His presentation failed in that the dumb people understood the wrong message and the smart people are mostly like "meh, that's it?"

Yeah as soon as he attributed diabetes to eating candy I went oh no eject eject

It's a public speaking club and he's doing a contest. So he's not trying to convince people of anything, just trying to win a contest on style. Content is not graded, or at least it wasn't when I was a part of it.

Devil is in the details, as with anything. More people die of diabetes, yes, your DNA can determine you to be more likely to develop cancer yes. But we also have drastically lowered the amount of people smoking. Less people die from smoking, because less people are smoking. Can't die from smoking, if you don't smoke.

Fewer people die of second hand smoking as well.

What were the stats 30 years ago?

To be fair, he did cite his sources.

Same one used by a famed US navy veteran and American senator.

It's because smoking stinks

No such thing as second hand diabetes/

I beg to disagree... what if you keep feeding me cakes?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly, he starts with a disingenuous proposition.

v Got that in a gif for you my dude.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You eat a cake, you can get diabete. You smoke a sigarette, WE can have cancer. It’s not the same.

2 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 10

You share the cake, you can get friends. You share a cigarette, you can get mono.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

No one is allowed to smoke in public anymore, at least in my state. Furthermore, every cigarette increases the risk by a small amount, sure, But that amount is so small that 1 or 2 cigarettes in a year pales in comparison to the effects of air pollution.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also, you must eat. You don't need to smoke.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Didn't your mother ever tell you to finish your cigarette before leaving the table?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But if you smoke, you feel like eating less.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most people can have some cake some times without increased risk of diabetes. Any smoking increases risk of cancer.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I think their point was that me eating cake doesn't put YOU at risk of diabetes.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Then get off my lawn you weirdo, I don't know you.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He made up the arguments. I think we're missing an important second part of the speech

As soon as he mentioned the DNA bit, I knew something had to be up, because in a research methods class I took, that exact argument was brought up as a confound that was constantly used by tobacco execs against research on the health effects of smoking. Those nightmare machines where hundreds of mice are forced to huff cigarettes were developed because it was the only way to prove that smoking increased the risk of lung cancer above and beyond what would be expected from genetic factors alone.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Basically for years it was this: "Smoking causes cancer!" "Okay, but what if those people were just genetically predisposed and would've gotten cancer no matter what?" Eventually, scientists did more research and shot back with "Well we made hundreds of mice smoke cigarettes, controlling for genetic factors, and cancer rates were much higher there compared to the hundreds of non-smoking mice with comparable genetics." After that, it became much harder to sweep away.

I was about to start writing a huge reply that all of those points he was making were bullshit, but then he said it at the end. Smoking kills. All forms of tobacco are bad for you. Sugar is not great for you in large amounts either.

You just proved his point on the dangers of misinformation. You heard only what you wanted to hear.

I commented that my gut reaction because of my own pain caused me to not make it through. That's my mistake.

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 3

That is one of the most mature responses I've seen on the internet in a Very long time.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

We all do that. The fact that you recognise that is the important part. I'm sorry for your loss.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I’m so sorry about your mom.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mistakes happen. My sincerest condolences. It s hard to lose people important in our lives. Especially if there is too much room for what ifs and their going seems untimely.
May you find peace and rest in your journey through this loss.
