You can tell it's broken by the way it is.

I was just singing Richard Matheson's (the writer of this episode) praises a few posts back. Brilliant man.

Delta flight 1425 from Atlanta to Baltimore happened in July. 148 people on board and everybody was fine. I would have been concerned.

6 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

Yup, pilot shut down no. 1 engine and effected emergency landing with just no. 2 engine. That's why they are made to fly on one engine.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thankyou.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for this

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

No problem. I don't like being left with unanswered questions.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

That much is clear

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can see the blades in the housing. It's off, being spun by the wind at this point

6 years ago | Likes 345 Dislikes 5

"Wind milling"

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also jet turbines are designed and tested to be capable of containing all of the blades should a catastrophic failure occur.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Tell that to the passengers of Southwest Airlines Flight 1380

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It did contain the blades, outside casing came off and hit a window behind the engine, pretty terrible luck:

The immobile vanes are stators. You can see the LP compressor stage turning slowly.

Tell the crew, Pilot will shut that engine down and probably continue the flight. Airplanes are designed to be able to compensate for that.

6 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 3

That engine was already shut down.

What plane is that? The engine seems way too close and way to high from the view in the window

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I’m guessing you never flew in the 80s. As noted, it’s an MD-88. Rear engined narrowbody airliners used to be all the rage, but the 737...

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...and A320 basically own that market in the US except for Delta, who loved their MDs. Little regional jets still have rear engines.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It looked fake to me as i have never flown a rear engine plane. But having seen a photo of an MD88 it makes total sense. Thanks!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks like it could be the Boeing 717-200: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_717. The Fokker 100 also has rest engines.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I agree. Would like to know more assuming that this is real

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It is real. It’s a Delta Airlines flight and the plane landed safely. They gave each passenger a $30 food voucher for the trouble.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Seems reasonable. Wtf

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s a large airline. They are too profitable so they don’t really give a shit

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

MD88 per Flight Aware at the time https://heavy.com/news/2019/07/delta-flight-1425-engine-failed-videos/

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thanks!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"out of an abundance of caution...we landed" why are they not getting fined to shit for saying something like that. How is that legal.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

The plane's condition was like literally one screw away from killing I don't know 50 people. How can they just legally pretend nothing hpnd?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

At some point mechanical issues are just going to happen but there are enough redundancies that they aren't going to make the plane crash.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

There is a fucking giant piece of metal hurling around in the turbine. Are you actually serious? You think it's an abundance of caution to

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just to be clear it was out of an abundance of caution they diverted to land very slightly sooner vs continuing on and landing as an *c*

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*c* emergency/priority at their original destination. Also, even an uncontained engine failure (worse case scenario for this issue) is *c*

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*c* pretty unlikely to take down the whole plane. The only US aviation fatality in a long while was an uncontained engine failure on a *c*

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm flying on Sunday, didn't need to see this. Ass.

6 years ago | Likes 199 Dislikes 27

Flying is statistically safer than driving. But crashing a plane is a lot more dangerous than crashing a car, so I get your nervousness.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most commercial airliners can practically fly with one engine and half a wing missing, that won't bring a plane down.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was on purpose just to screw you up. You're very important to us all and we decided to ruin something for you.

6 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 2

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Don’t stress. If the plane is ok - you live. If it crashes, well ain’t nothing you can do about it. Just relax and enjoy the metal death box

6 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

So... every plane is Schrödinger's plane? Where as soon as you enter you're both dead and alive at the same time?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I cannot confirm nor deny.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't get a window seat.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It could have sucked that thing in to the active turbine, shredded and flamed out everything and as long as the failure was contained it *c*

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*c* would have been urgent but fine.

A few things, planes make weird noises, the wingtips sometimes flex while flying, if there is a burning smell it's probably from the galley.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Flew from the phillippines, 12 hour flight. As soon as we took off there was loud grinding sound. I was sure would die.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If water seems closer than it should, it probably is.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sometimes the hydraulic systems make loud groans or squeaks. Completely normal. Older planes have some creaks and rattles.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

But air travel is extremely safe and planes are maintained to high standards. There may be bumps in the air too. Completely normal but I’m

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not gonna lie. I’ve experienced turbulence a bunch of times and it never feels good. But you aren’t in danger. There are roughly a million
