Front page edit: If anyone has questions about their tires, PM me so I can answer.

I work at a tire shop. I have people come in every day who have no idea what’s going on with their car. Most times it takes a simple peak at the tires to see if they’re safe.

This here is a flat spot from brakes locking up. This will cause a NASTY vibration when driving. Also those metal cords are very bad if you can see them.

This one is an impact break caused most likely from a pothole or curb. Think of it like a hernia in the construction of the tire. The bubble is where the impact happened. The impact on this tire seemed to be months ago, but didn’t show itself until it warmed up a bit.

Another impact break, but this one caused a separation in the tread and sidewall plies. This is basically tearing the tread of the tire away from the sidewall of the tire.

Continuation of the separation.

I just want to make sure you guys visit your nearby tire distributor every once in a while and make sure you’re safe.

Remember, you can be comfortable and confident in your driving as much as you want. But when a tire like this blows, it endangers everyone around you on the road.

Top one is caused when a truck driver doesn't release his trailer brakes.

I love it when problems are glaringly obvious. It may get some chuckles around the shop, but thank God I don't have to track down gremlins.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I too work in a tire shop! Don't ignore nails/screws/metal in your tire, even if it "just leaking a little bit", get that shit fixed.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I realize now that I haven't changed my name since when I worked at Party City, and it would be very hard to believe me

Here in Kentucky there's no inspection. I've seen vehicles on the road that are horrifying.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wait, you're not suppose to drive until it's down to the rim? Damn I been doing it wrong.

8 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 3

My first car I drove the same tires until my girlfriend noticed they were sparking on the pavement. I said, "That's not good?" I'm an idiot.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Funny you compare an impact break to a hernia. I fix hernias for a living, and when I explain it, I say it's like a bubble on their tire.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It’s the best explanation.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's like driving with a loaded gun sitting on the dash, safety off.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is roughly an area the size of an a4 piece of paper keeping you on the road. Don't skimp on it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We had an impact break in our car on a road trip. Tried to limp it into the next town... six hours away. It destroyed the opposite tire.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It then destroyed our spare. We had to replace three tires once we finally got towed into town. Also, Fuck Flagstaff.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That flat spot looks like they drove everywhere with the brake locked up

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

not as far as you might think, but probs a good few 100m depending on the surface

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you drive a semi truck with 10 wheels you won't notice that quickly if one wheel locks up.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Literally got out of my car the other day and told a dude on the road his tire was completely flat. He said ok and drove away.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Past a garage. Then another one. Some people just can't be saved.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are 3 components on a vehicle that I believe you should never cheap out on. Tires, breaks, and suspension components.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah but sometimes they want you to change your tires just because they want cash.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

We only ever recommend tires when you need them. That’s our mentality where I work.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

this is why understanding when your tread is getting thin is good.. so you know when somewhere is bulshitting

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The tread and other damage to tires is pretty obvious if you look

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pay with credit card, done.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you good sir. I shall tirelessly advocate your message.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How did the first one wear down like that?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most likely trailer brakes locked and then continued driving.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is fantastic thank you

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

were they driving at 300 mph when they locked those brakes up? that look like it was dragged for quite some time

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't forget about checking your rims too. I had a tiny dent in the outside of one of mine and fucked up a tire. AWD car = new set of tires

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Woof. This is why I stay away from buying AWD.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I love my car, it was just a case of me being stupid and paying the price. Potholes in the UP are no joke

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

UP? Excuse me but what does that stand for?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Upper peninsula of Michigan.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That first one is off a truck trailer.. Guaranteed he changed that tyre immediately, and most likely his underwear as well....

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

seized brake... it happens, if you have a heavier load or a powerful cab it can be possible to not notice

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep. Hose goes and the Jakes hit.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

money? gasoline? obligation of a job? a ghost? idk whats keeps me on the road...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think people would care a lot more about their tyres if they werent so fucking expensive. Instead they dont want to fix that knick ...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

in the tyre because it will cost 2 days wages so they run on it risking a blow-out

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dont be cheap specially with winter tires

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Never cheap out on what keeps you off the ground.

8 years ago | Likes 194 Dislikes 2

What? Tires touch the ground brah. Never skimp on tires.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 17

They keep YOU from being on the ground because of an accident.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ofc it depends their condition. But your tires is the only thing which has contact with the ground - if they fail no system will save you. >

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why cheap out on basicly the most important part on your car?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No Joke. Never Skimp on tires.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

People do all the time

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or brakes.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I used to. Then I drove a car with Michelin Pilot SS in the summer and General Altimax Arctic in the winter. It's like another world.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I live in the Poconos, my Nokians saved my butt on the hwy last night. Ppl were stopped in the right lane, I was fine in the unplowed left.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

I can say the same of Altimax Arctics last night. I like in Northern NJ and the roads were bad last night but I unfortunately had to travel.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Bonus: I drive a RWD Camaro. Tires are everything! Well, maybe a bit of skill too lol

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

What if you have slow leak with new tires. Was told it’s rust in seal joint. How expensive is that @op?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’d be really concerned as to what joints your mechanic is talking about. Unless you’re talking about the seal between tire and wheel?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, between tire and wheel. Got new tires and they were flat in 2 weeks.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sounds like the wheels are old and not creating a good seal. Unfortunately only way to fix that is by getting new wheels. Can you show pics?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No but thanks for trying. I wish I had more upvotes for this post.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you do have anymore questions let me know! I’m more then happy to find a solution for you. Mainly cause I’m always bored and love my job.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bout time I change the 8 year old tyres on my car. But not before doing some mad skids

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can you fix this? Asking for a friend...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nooooooo

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was about 3/4" square. Here was the rest of the stick...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What would have caused this?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Running over Chuck Norris’s gecko.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tread separation and over heating is my guess. I can kinda see the tread was low so the metal cords got to hit and burst at their seems.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

We had two go a week apart. We were thinking maybe they were retreads coz they were only put on in August last year.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Retreading tires is highly illegal in the US. Only tractor trailor tires ever get retreaded.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Really? Even the legit tyre shops sell retreads here, I think truck drivers are the only ones that use them- tyres are cheap new anyway

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Were they new or used tires?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If they just bought them and the middle is that worn I’m gonna hedge it’s used.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sometimes you gotta get someone to say it for themselves to believe ya. ;)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought they were new but now I’m thinking that the mechanic might have been dodgy

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah go to an actual tire place when it comes to tires. New can actually be fairly expensive, but it’s cheaper then the alternative.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks for reminding

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In Germany, your car has to pass a super-anal biannual inspection. That includes every little safety-relevant detail. They exaggerate...

8 years ago | Likes 1074 Dislikes 11

Unless they just cheat to get past the tests, right Volkswagen?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Texas you take a class twice a week for one month, complete 60 hours worth of driving and then drive for 5 min with the instructor

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unless you're a car company

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Used to have to get the underside sprayed off to hide the leaks...then immediately get it inspected

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've seen videos of cars from Germany. I don't believe you.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

In Estonia it's annually

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It was a lot better than the Japanese one. At least the German inspection was cheap and quick. Japanese JCI was $500+ and took a few days.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

*biennial....but still quite super-anal...

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Germany has the strictest driving test My mom had to get her German drivers license in the early 90s + shes also paralyzed, made it harder

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does this deter people from aftermarket modifications?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On newer cars, yes, but on older cars you have some room to modify

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Annual inspections are required here in Maine, too, but everyone either has a 'guy' to give them the sticker or just doesn't care.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In GA I've never heard of that happening. The system is pretty tight and they'll shut you right down.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Biannual (twice a year) or biennial (every other year)?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think it's exaggeration. Honestly think Germans are the calmest and most methodical drivers I've seen (at least Euro and East Asia)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In America, haha you said Super Anal

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, you can drive as fast as you want on some routes on the Autobahn, and when I drive, like, 140 mph it should be totally safe...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I stopped reading at « super-anal ».

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, that is why my second hand Volkswagen imported from Germany was as good as new when I got it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In Denmark too ...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, on several part of our Autobahn you can still drive as fast as you can, at least we make sure it is the drivers fault, not the cars.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In Massachusetts (U.S.) we have annual inspections as well.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Used to have inspections in a lot of places in the US until about 8ish years ago

Just saying rental companies can be real cocks.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Indeed, I take a lot of photos beforehand

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They charged me for fuel but the tank was full. Took several weeks to resolve. They know I was in a hurry to catch my flight.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

First car was an 86 Opel Kadett. Ran it into the ground cuz I couldn't get it inspected. No cadalitic(sp) converter? Best car ever.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've never had a vehicle with a catalytic converter.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Catalytic.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My inspection guy just gives me a wink as I pull off with not review mirror or hirn

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How often do vehicles in Germany require emissions testing?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

every 2 years iirc, you do that together with the other inspection normally...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We have that in Sweden too

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd even say I'm proud of our high standards (it's the same procedure south the border where I live). You won't see such rolling deathtraps.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Yes, even if I get upset spending money on that check. It's good for everyone.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: those inspections aren't effective in reducing accidents since there's so much time between them.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 18

Screw you guys for downvoting something just because it's not immediately obvious and screw you for not providing any counter-arguments.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ehm yes the are....? You are not allowed to drive around a freaking tin of sardines of a car... That makes you driving a lot more safe

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Repeating the statement does not make it true. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_inspection#cite_note-1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This reason I'm jealous of the Germans. The autobahn seems like an awesome concept. But in the US it would never work lol people be crazy

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

But our Autobahn is just a highway. What's different, except the speed limit?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Well, they are better maintained and build than most highways... and the part with no speed limits <3

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

From what I've heard the normal drivers are highly respectful of road laws, and the speed is important just because it's quicker

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone that was stationed in Germany for a couple years, the big difference is Germans respect the autobahn and road laws. Not in the US

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As an American, we generally don't have a lot of respect for most things. Sometimes not even ourselves.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's about it. I've heard they maintain the autobahn better than normal highways though.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Eeeh ... depends. Autobahn is mostly state responsibility, so there are differences.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Americans are idiots behind the Lenkrad. They drive slow in the left lane and don't realize they have Farhtrichtunganzeiger.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

AFAIK, on US highways you can pass on the right. Also, they're closer to Bundesstrassen or Kraftfahrtstrassen; there might be crossings 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

and traffic lights. Interstate highways seem to be close to Autobahnen, though. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_Highway_standards

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah, most states have a law saying you can only pass on the right under certain circumstances. Nobody gives a fuck though.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In Germany it's very simple: If you pass on the right, you die. Also it's illegal.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When I lived there I bought a motorcycle. Would not pass inspection for being too loud. I FUCKING BOUGHT IT IN YOUR COUNTRY! All stock 1/

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No modifications and wouldn't pass. I made a baffle that barely let it breathe and it was super quiet. Passed test. Took baffle out and 2/

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Tossed in the trash and rode away. Realized I needed later and turned around and kept it for next time.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Problem is, if the police catches you, you are driving a motorcycle that lacks the permission to be operated. Big fines.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ended up being the workers on base doing it wrong. We went to actual german inspectors and all was fine with noise but I was gone by then.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I broke down in Germany because the alternator died, which drained the battery. I had no way of activating my hazard lights, which are 1/6

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mandatory should you break down. Eventually some police passed us and stopped. I explained to them why I was broken down and that help 2/6

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Was on the way. Despite all this they still insisted that I turn my hazards on. The ensuing conversation went something like this: 3/6

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"You need hazards on" "I apologise officer, but that's impossible" "I understand, but you must have hazards on" "I'm aware, but I can't" 4/6

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*pause* "yes...but you need hazards on, it's the law". Fortunately their partner stepped in to point out the futility of our situation. 5/6

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same in sweden! however new cars have the inspection 2-3 years apart. older cars <2005 have like every year

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You also have the autobahn so I’m glad about this :)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That makes sense because Germans have the autobahn. When you have cars going 200kmh+ regularly, you need to make sure they aren't a danger

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This isn't a German thing, but an EU thing. There's a reason it's called EU control.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same thing in Austria, except annual. Nobody likes to do those, but they give good information on what will need fixing in the future...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Switzerland, every two years that fucking test. Their exaggeration is the reason these two countries are almost perfect in many ways.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same in the Czech and most of EU. But here in the US I could drive a lunch box and they wouldn't care

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

In Missouri they check all your lights, your horn, and if it runs for inspection.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on the state. Virginia here is pretty serious.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TIL Germans are constantly doing super-anal stuff

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sweden as well.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In NH, USA the inspections are yearly.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I moved from NZ to USA, it feels super weird to not have to do warrant of fitness every 6 months...

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Geez that would be weird. People grizzle about the cost etc of getting WOFs but they are really important eh.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Texas, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia require yearly inspections. In Texas a failed inspection = No yearly registration sticker.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

so a physical? as a commercial driver we have to do tho annually

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They also have no speed limits. That's how anal they are.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

But Germany has speed limits

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Autobahn doesn't.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 8

IIRC some parts do have limits.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Officially there is no *general* speed limit. But signs are put up to establish local speed limits, and we have a lot of those.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It has a "Recommended Speed" (130). You can drive faster At your own risk but when you crash insurance prob. won't pay

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most of it does - only a few parts left without limits, and the only time you can actually speed there is at 3 AM.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

My tip: A63 Mainz to Kaiserslautern. Very rural. Let the good times roll.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do they time how long it takes windshield wipers to do a full rotation? =o

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

UK has the same but yearly. It kinda scared me when I first learned that most of the US doesn't have this at all.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

..you can tell watching USA dash cam videos, when they simply just do not stop in time

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

yup that shit would come up on the uks test since there is a brake check as part of it, uneven braking will get you a fail too

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Every state I have lived in requires annual safety inspections. Where I live now also requires emissions checks.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

MOST of the US requires yearly inspections...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've never heard of it being a requirement

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Annual inspections and emissions inspections biannually here

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What the heck?! We have yearly inspections in the US. Can get your car registered without it in Texas.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Alabama, there are no inspections of any kind

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Australia also has annual inspections from your cars 5th birthday

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would hate a bi anal inspection, it is just not my thing

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...sometimes and everybody is famously scared of their next inspection, but it does make the autobahn safer. Also, shit like this will not..

8 years ago | Likes 370 Dislikes 6

...fly with police. Granted, a flat spot happens suddenly, but how old was the tyre when it happened, and wtf did that dude pull?

8 years ago | Likes 261 Dislikes 3

thats some serious locked wheel skid to get that flat, or possibly driven with the brakes locked...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Considering the tread left, not that old. Most likely from a semi truck with enough wheels so you don't necessarily notice if one is locked

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My bet is that it’s a HGV trailer tyre. Brakes can lock on trailers for many reasons, and it is hardly noticeable from the cab.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Lol, US here. Driving on a car with no oil, 4 bald tires, transmission with some obvious metal in it, most synchros gone, electric issues

I'll tell you right now. In north america when a tire is no longer safe to be on the steer tires of a semi they get moved to a trailer tire.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

No idea. A buddy sent me a picture of that. Tire techs have nothing better to do then send each other pictures of customers tires.

8 years ago | Likes 173 Dislikes 1

Get back to work!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would absolutely do the same lol

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Dental techs did the same with teeth!

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

My urologist does it too!

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

This is a common practice among almost every profession. I have a friend who used to manage a urology ground... I’ve seen some shit...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aren't the cost of new cars there more in line with the average income without rediculous rated loans

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Cars are expensive everywhere and you have to pay a lot for mandatory insurance etc etc

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

define expensive? you can get new cars for like £8k in the uk if you want a little city car

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea same but 8k is a lot of money+ all the insurance and petrol stuff... public transport is always better in my European mind

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if you live in a city, im only like 15 miles from edinburgh and have no useful public transport... insurance on that 8k car for me is /2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thing is most Europeans buy their car cash. Don't know anyone with a loan on their car. Also a lot of people have company cars.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Old cars maybe, new ones usually bought with loans

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not in The Netherlands. The past couple of years it has become a but more popular. But usually it is don't buy something you can't afford

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Uh, what? Care to elaborate on that?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

From what i know of my area most cars are bought on lease, just relatively cheap used cars might get paid in "cash". (Germany)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Only if you buy older cars. People don't have extra 20-30 000 € in their bank account waiting for spending.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

depends what you want to buy, a new vw polo is like 10k

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Heh... cheapest model 15k in Finland after taxes.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In the US is different by state and county but its usually anual. But allot of shops dont check if the car looks new/ cared for. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Some techs just walk around the car check lights and slap a sticker on. It is not well enforced. We need stricter enforcement and 2/3

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Tougher drivers tests. I care to much aboit this.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Here in Virginia, the car has to pass inspection, but the inspections are done by repair shops and not independent inspectors. It can be 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

a pretty crooked system. lots of my friends have stories about replacing, say, wiper blades right before the inspection and the shop then2/3

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

trying to tell them they need to replace their wiper blades in order to pass. It's like, who thought this was a good idea?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If the shops suspect of dubious activity one can call VSP. The inspector can lose their license too. The stickers have serial # that can >

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Be tracked back to the shop that issued it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Tennessee we used to have inspections but we stopped

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Germany actually has a driving test as well. USA would likely have these things if the people weren't the fuel for the profit machines.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 6

"how am i supposed to know how to parallel park? no one ever tought me how to do that!" - american

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You don't have driving tests in the USA? How do you get your driver's licence?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

"The USA" is a really big place. Yes, there are places with tougher driving tests and places with easier ones. It's not all the same.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

It’s best to think of all 50 states in the US as different countries in these situations. Different rules and laws in every one of them.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Massachusetts has a 6 month learning permit period, followed by a written test, a 30 minute road drill with a state police officer, and /1

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

then a 1 year probation period. Any infractions or accidents in the probation period can result in an extension or revoking the license.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

20 questions (multiple choice) written, 5 minutes driving a mile around the DMV. Last I heard, Germany has 100+ and an extensive road test

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Are you serious? That's ridiculous, I'm not fit to drive due to various problems and even I could pass that, that in no way shows competence

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Germany: physical exams for lorry drivers licence, also many hours driving with certified instructor before every test. Not so ridiculous.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Florida at least I had to take a 50ish question test to get my permit of which I had to have for a year before taking a ~30min driving>

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yes, you have to pass a multiple choice test with 100 out of 616 questions and you have to drive for an hour.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My driving school was right at an intersection. There were several people who failed as soon as they left the parking lot. :D

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Dont forget the mandatory 14 hours of driving lessons before that.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same for Finland, but annual. I though every country has these. But we get good statistics on what cars break easily.

8 years ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 1

Yep in England it's an MOT (Ministry of Transport) certificate you need to aquire. But everyone has a friend who will pass anything!

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

there have been a lot of people doing this caught since the rules changed but there are still some out there

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

thing is they are putting people in danger, i know some traffic police who have pulled some scary scary things

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

German TÜV exported the concept (along with their services) to Turkey a few years ago, IIRC.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We have them on the east coast of the US, but its state by state here

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

same for Sweden

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They are considering making the time between longer now, for some newer caras up to 5years. But then again Finns tend ot be good with tyres.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And if we are not, cops will be :P

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or your snow is better to tires than Asphalt ;)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

But our snow is worse for the asphalt than tyres :\

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Where I live in the U.S. we only have an emissions/smog test bi-annually. It's a tax unless your car is over 25yrs old, electric, or hybrid

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I wonder how they would handle a new steam car.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ohio doesn't smog. Or inspect. Which is a good thing and a bad thing. You see some really sketchy not-road-worthy cars.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Do other states inspect?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Texas does.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not america sir

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

What?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yes we do...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I do, and I’m American. From America.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You can get check ups but they're not legally REQUIRED here in the US as in some other countries... That's what they're saying...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

It's state by state. I know Ma requires one (I live here)

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Do you meet emission standards, and are you safe to drive?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I generally meet emission standards, except the day after buffalo wing night.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Woah you dont have mandatory health checking for cars?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Nope. That just wouldn't be freedom, now would it? Also, tests are for nerds.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Different states may have different rules - in Cali, we have a smog inspection, but only every several years.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Depends on the state. Pennsylvania has annual inspection and emissions check. Ohio, right next door, does not have inspection. Yes, as some

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

other comments have said, there are some interesting moving piles of car parts on their roads.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or people. You can get away with being legally blind.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

How can you get the driving insurance if blind? Dont tell me it’s not required

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Most states have yearly inspection for cars

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dot

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Some US states require yearly inspections (but it's mainly just emissions/making sure all your lights work), others don't.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So you just have people driving around with all these fucked up cars with bits falling off and whatever? No safety checks?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Basically, yes

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, sadly. If a car is noticeably a danger to the public (like bumper looks like it'll fly off) a cop can stop the car and give a ticket

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I guess enough people regard that as government overreach or taking our freedoms or some BS like that. So, no, not all states have those.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They've probably got punishments if your negligence causes damage, but human beings also generally suck at risk assessment.
