Sneaker waves. When one wave overtakes another wave, almost doubling its momentum, followed by an additional overtaking wave on top.

They're usually very rare. So people get used to the peaceful shore, they get complacent.
Moral of the story: When you're at an ocean beach, always face the water so you can see it coming. It will look like a wave sandwich, a bit taller than usual. One wave breaking onto the top of another. They key is the unseen amount of water behind it, pushing toward shore.
