I’m 29, and I want to stop drinking. I don’t know how to begin. I’ve drank since age 21, when I could legally supply myself with the booze, but the abuse didn’t start until I was 23, and realized my wife suffered from E.D.S. and that I would have to support her for the rest of our lives.
I’m drunk as I type this and want to avoid overly poetic speech, so I’ll keep it short and sweet. I have a wife I love dearly, a three old I love even more, and I want to stop this behavior. “This Behavior” is pretty much downing a pint of Sailor Jerry every other day along with a six pack of Platinum when I can get it.
They say 30 days without booze will change the life of an alcoholic. I want to know if that is true. I want to know if I can still be the man my wife married, and the father my daughter thinks I am. But they love me, and will be kind in judgment. Which is why I am doing this. The internet is not kind, is not gentle, and is brutally honest. I need someone to keep me honest while I do this.
I’m quitting alcohol and cigarettes for 30 days. Every day, I will post. It may not be great, it may not be entertaining, fuck me…it may not even be worth reading…but maybe, just maybe, it will be. And maybe, just fucking maybe, someone out there will feel what I feel and try to do the same.
……..
….here we go.

Today is tomorrow. Where is your today's post at? I demand it! @op keep it up

The day Imgur became AA

I made the 30days on a bet for $20 with a friend of mine. I made it. It wasn't easy. However, I immediately took the $20 to the bar after.

Don't be too hard on yourself @op - one day at a time

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm gonna watch this. I've lost people to alcohol and I want to see someone pull through for once. I'll see you tomorrow @OP

Goodluck my friend.

All you have to do is not drink till you go to sleep, maybe you can drink tomorrow, and when you wake up tomorrow

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't drink again, then repeat again, it works! I haven't had a drink in 1084 days. It gets easier, I promise.

Start running, endorphins help you quit booze and stay off of it. Good luck!!

I've been sober for 17 weeks and 3 days. Only because I'm pregnant. But it was easy to choose my family over booze. Hope you can find that

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Strength in you.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Look at it everyday and say I can change for them cos if you don't you will eventually lose them forever. Be strong and be a dad hero

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

All I can say is good luck.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

@op, find the closest AA meeting you can find. Go there for the first month. try not to drink but you're allowed to fail. One day at a time

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Forgive yourself in case of failure. Push the need to drink far away as possible, if you fail, try further next time.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It rarely can be in 1 take. just don't give up. Talk to me if you need to, i've been in the system.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel ya. Alcoholism runs strong in my family and I struggle with it heavily. Keep it up, you can do it!

Take with grain of salt, but quitting booze AND cigs goes well at first but might compound at the worst moment..consider ecig to help?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My dad kept his drinking under control until I was 14-ish and then he crashed hard. He's missing presumed dead now. Save yourself man.

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

I hope you are still sober.

Meetings helped me. It was the accountability. I took it one day at a time and before I knew it the time stacked up. (1)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

(2) I couldn't handle the thought of never drinking again. I had to tell myself "I just can't drink today"

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Please be careful. Alcohol withdrawal can kill you. I highly recommend going to see a doctor. The danger signs include a fast heart rate 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

2/2 Tremors, confusion, agitation, and hallucinations.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also seizures . . .

Cold turkey is tough... unless you put the turkey in a zip-lock bag to seal in the juice & then, buddy, it's sandwich time!

8 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 5

Haaa... sandwich time is the best time.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Tried it last month. Made it 5 days before it got bad. Sweating, irritated at every turn, shaking, hope you're stronger than I was. Cheers.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I made it 2 my first time. 5 my second. Gets better usually around 3 days. But fuck if it's still not a problem

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was doing ok, took different routs home to avoid bars and stores. Then one day construction took me past my bar. Yep.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Happens. Happened last week. Everyone went for drinks and I didn't say no. I'm back on course though. Using imgur to keep my mind off it...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good luck buddy.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Quit the booze first for the thirty days dude, keep the cigarettes for now, make it easier on yourself-no point fighting 2 battles at once

8 years ago | Likes 383 Dislikes 6

Agreed

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a psych major, I can attest @Digney is right. But don't let your smoking increase in its place! You can do it!!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

as someone who has quit drinking listen to this advice @op if not you are setting yourself up for failure

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Agree, take one challenge at a time

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I quit smoking 14 days ago. I dont have any cravings anymore. But i think it is indeed better to first stop drinking. Then nicotine.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

+1 for this. You've a better chance doing it one thing at a time. Both'll kill ya, but cigarettes can wait until the booze is under control.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Omg yes. Dont try to do both at once. One at a time. One day at a time. If you trip up, forgive yourself, and say 'ill do better tomorrow'

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

And just try to do better tomorrow. Even if its cutting down how much you drink or smoke. You got this bro. You fucking got this.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I quit smoking and drinking in the same month. Wasn't easy but got there!

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

When I went to outpatient treatment they never dared to ban cigarettes. They said it was too much work to do both. Good luck.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Sisters been to rehab 3 times and detox centers lots and even when she wasn't technically allowed visitors or to leave they still let me

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Drop of her cigarettes because they knew 2 vices at once was never going to happen
