I wanted it to look like something out of Skyrim.

Used an 1/2" thick steel plate at the top.

Getting it level

I wish I had more pictures of the during construction phase. It took me about 3 weeks and I had a redesign about halfway through.

I decided to move it to the side of the house, this was out hot tub area before it broke, so it made the perfect spot for the forge. When your not blacksmithing it makes for an awesome fire pit. It can bur coal, coke, or wood.

This is where the bellows goes. I just use a fan that blows up one of those inflatable Santa's on your lawn.

The ash falls down through the pipe that's vertical.

I made some bevel cuts and welded in a tray to hold the coke and Lined it with firebrick. Now I just need some fire salts.

This is my anvil. I bought it off Craigslist for 25 bucks and it's pretty awesome. It's a William Foster 95lb from 1835. It's a little worn but it still rings.

Fucking cool!

my god i wish i had the time/ability to make a forge like that. when i made my forge, i basically filled an air compresser with cement...

You might want to knock a gap on both sides of the lip on the top - won't be able to get long stock in there otherwise.

Beautiful

An antique anvil for $25 ?!? I think I hate you. Good job on the force though.

Where's the entrance to the werewolf cave?

All the forges on Craigslist in my area are smashed to hell for 400$

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy shit only 25$

The anvil is my spirit animal. I'm also a little worn but still ring.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What's the postage cost on an anvil?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is beautiful... That being said, I hate to. Be the bearer of bad news, but cinder blocks explode under extreme heat... But its pretty

Favorite part about this build: it can burn coke.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Next time I get it fired up I'll make a follow-up post, maybe a knife making tutorial too!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Normally I just use a mirror to hold my coke.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wont that concrete go boom?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It has a 1/2 inch steel pan, lined with furnace brick and foundry cement. The concrete never gets hot enough.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Interesting...how much was this?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only genuine fire salts will do, the forge knows the difference!

*Uses the salts without thinking. Sees quest counter drop to 0/20*

Every time @OP says "coke"

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We always get a giggle out of this at events. We tend to yell things like "hey, someone drag the bag of coke over!" without thinking, 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and then wonder why everybody's turned to give us funny looks. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You say it still rings.. is that the sign to watch (listen) for?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

From my understanding, if an anvil doesn't ring it's layers of steel can be seperating.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly. If it doesn't go PING! when you hit it, it's cracked, or it's not a real anvil. BTW, if the PING is too loud for you [or your 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

neighborhood], you can loosely wrap a chunk of chain around the base of the anvil to soak up most of the noise. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Even better, take the magnets out of an old(preferably broken) hard drive. Glue one to a roughly 1"x2" piece of scrap wood, and another 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

to a similarly sized piece of non-ringing iron. Put one on the underside of the horn, and the other somewhere below the heel. Move them 2/?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

around to "tune" your anvil until you find the best positioning for yours. This can be combined with the chain to further reduce ring. 3/3

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I forgot to mention, any neodymium magnets will work. And some anvils do better with 2 smaller magnets on either end of the wood/metal blocks.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"alittle worn" ? This thing has no edges anymore! Still nice thing you build

9 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 1

Hey that baby's seen some shit, she earned them curves.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Let's see how good you look after 181 years lol. I know I need to get a new one, but I only smith as a Hobby so it does what I need.

9 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 1

I'm thinking of building a forge. About how hot does the forge get?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mine with the right amount air/good quality fuel I'd guess around 3500-3600 degrees. I recommend a gas forge though, it's way cheaper to run

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe you find a blacksmith who will renew the top plate for you.Ive never seen it irl but it looks like a lot of fun ^^

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Find a blacksmith or machine shop to face the anvil, no need to get a new one!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can build it back up it yourself with 'hard-facing' wire or rod. Then grind the flats and corners to shape.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

A welder and an angle grinder will do the trick.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

After 181 years, look as good, you will not, hmm?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lucky for finding a anvil that cheap.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Not really. Lots of beat up anvils go for that price in my area, because they just don't have much life left. Poor abused anvils :<

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

seriously I have been looking for one for years and can't find an actual steel anvil for under $100

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And you probably never will unless you are willing to drive to a different state for a barnhouse find.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

thats probably true

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So the beginning and end pics have nothing in common. When did you hire someone?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I went through a redesign with the help of my father, swapped from cinder blocks to landscaping stones. I don't have money to hire someone.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Who poured the concrete and sodded the yard then? Got any pics cus that pour looks a little complicated

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

If you look back at the post I said I moved the forge to the side of my house from the back. If you notice there's a swimming pool too.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

*mutters to self* don't argue with people on the Internet, don't argue with people on the internet, don't argue with people on the Internet

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

My bad. Didn't get the whole hot tub area being poured before. Got any more pics of the second forge going up?
