First thought. This isn't in the US, the land of the selfish bastards.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hope they found a match. Just reading the headline made me wanna tear up

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

They did and actually had 3 matches

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Let me guess, Republicans have no problem if those people would get water & snacks handed out.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Maybe take a break from the internet for a while, you seem a bit wound up. I mean, this isn't even in the US

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

People sometimes make me happy. I wish it happened more

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kid next door with the same condition but wasn't in the media spotlight: o_o

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They put the cute ones in the spotlight to get people to register, the data they collect is used to match everyone

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Did this help science? If so, awesome

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't you guys have a centralised bonemarrow / stem cell registry??

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

People can volunteer to be placed on a donor registry, but nobody is compelled to in the UK.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, we ain't compelled either - but we (most of my friends and I) signed up and got screened. I just sorta thought everyone did it.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Be the match

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In the U.S. this only happens if a rich, narcissistic asshole promises to create a RICH WHITES ONLY CLUB that you will never qualify for...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And then the police turned up and pepper sprayed them all I assume

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s next level “It takes a village”

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't know how it works elsewhere but in my country you can register as donor. This way they call you if you match a patient.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How to tell people you're from the UK without telling people you're from the UK.

4 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 1

In US big pharma would have quickly found all matching donors and monopolized treatment options.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

You missed the part where they would charge the donors for the desire to help someone get off of a very expensive treatment

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Didn't even give a toss about the kid, just love queuing up in the rain.

4 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

??? it’s what we do

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You all are a strait up gift to humanity thank you!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And not a profit incentive in sight....

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hope the DNA they got from everyone else can be saved so they can see if they can be matched to help other kids

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is as good a time as any to point out you can get on registries pretty easily. Personally on some bone marrow ones like Be the Match

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ain't no republicans in that line.

I’m currently waiting for my stem cell transplant (accrue lymphoblastic leukemia) and this is so cool to see. I’m lucky enough to have 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Found a match easily. It’s incredible to be given life by another person. Hopefully little dude came out on top!

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

His treatment was successful and he's back in school according to sources. Good luck with your treatment!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How could you post this and not mention that actually 10,000 people were screened and they found a match?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Glad they found a match.

Uh, ummm, faith in humanity restored, revolutionized, and sent through the roof

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Humanity. Their compassion knows no bounds. And yet it's still a legion of fucknuts.

4 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

I'll bet you a dollar there's not a single person in that line with a net worth over 10 million. Call it a hunch.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is my new motto

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky animals.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People. What a bunch of bastards.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only 1 out of 10,000?!

4 years ago | Likes 208 Dislikes 1

I actually matched as a back-up bone marrow donor in February this year! I didnt end up donating though, so I guess the other person donated

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s why it’s so important to be a donor! Be the Match is fantastic. I was choice 2 and they kept me informed and gave me the plan.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I guess it lives up to being rare

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The are never a "perfect" match, but they went through everyone and selected the three closest matches to minimize immune system reactions.

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Humans have 224 MHC genes spanning 3.6Mb pairs, we know about ½ functions. — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_histocompatibility_complex

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

To be fair, if they found a match with the first person they likely werent going to go through all of the other 9,999

4 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 1

They probably would check a few more, having a few options probably isn't a bad idea

4 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It takes a few days to get the results from the lab.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Good match vs better match is a thing.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is probably not an instant test, they took samples from all then ran all in the lab for a match in a batch

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

There are different degrees of matching, with that pool size of potential donors the smart thing was to check them all.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Besides there is more than one patient needing help, if they find other matches, the more the better

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They got 3 actually

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I highly doubt they got a match on the 1st one, I was meaning they wouldnt go through them all if they got what they were looking for.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

They likely would in case there were complications with the first. Don't put all your eggs in one basket and all that.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because they just want points. They could care less about the cause or whose affected

4 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 54

And for that they won't get mine.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 25

Who cares if they get points, though? Keep it on FP for the rest of us!

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

*couldn't care less

4 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

No, *could care less* is grammatically correct.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

Lol, no

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that's not how the expression goes.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you could care less, it implies that you care. Couldn't care less=don't care
