On my grandfathers death bed he offered to adopt my dad but grandpa was the only father he ever knew and said it wasn't necessary.

Honestly, a good learning experience for what the adoption process looks like?
meganical
They’re not going to remember that. They’ll just remember having been in a courtroom
mustardburp
The kids in the background look like a Whack a Mole game.
hammersquirrel
This is also a tiny part of the process. With kids this young I think what matters is igniting an interest, more than intellectual rigor tho
Bahbawhitesheep
I’m sure the exposure is great for them. Helps with empathy and sympathy to live in circumstances you otherwise wouldn’t experience.
SarcasticComment
At that age? Took a 6 year old sister in law to the history museum, art museum, and various other activities. Favorite part: Chuckey Cheese
The cultural learnings will be secondary or worse to "getting to have cake".
It’s a moment they can reflect on when their of age for that type of growth in empathy. They’ll realize what they overlooked as a kid.
If they remember the day at all
I miss when we were young and all in this shit together. When we all gave every other student Valentine’s Day cards. When did we stop?

We stopped when we realized that in our society time is money. Giving everyone valentines cards =/= being paid :(
SerenePrincess013
I resurrected that tradition at uni, one semester. Got hand-decorated cookies for everyone in my night class, including the prof.>>
Prof decided that class was a 30 minute lecture, sent someone next door to the grocery store for some milk (on her), & we did worksheets>>
& ate cookies for the next hour. Class was super fun that night. I need to email her, let her know I made it home...
Ilovealldogtypes
I used to give everyone a card and candy. In 4th grade someone stole my bag and took all the candies and ripped the cards. I stopped then.

Once dipshits added the words "Q" and "F" to their vocab. I was the last person to stop celebrating Valentine's in my class. Bastards...

You're either being intentionally obtuse, or blissfully ignorant, & I'm not sure which is worse.
When corporations stopped paying good $, unions broke up & now parents think only smart kids will get a good paying job! No more fun kids!

I told the judge to hurry it up my adoption (I was 5) cause I wanted to get to my party at McDonald's. I was looking forward to my root beer

OMG. Are your parents still on the market?

the Judge should have adjourned for the day and got a root beer with you. I would have, but I'm not a judge

What advice would you give someone considering adoption?
drduffer
The narrative has to always be: “We chose you”, and never, ever, “someone rejected you”. This is very hard to do.
Don't blame the kid if they don't trust you find the whole thing overwhelming. This is what ruined my relationship with my mum..
She blamed me for not being "part of the family" and would be verbally abusive when I wasn't the daughter she she wanted. I don't blame her
The world was a very different place back then. But I have PTSD because of it and barley speak to them now. Adoption can be hard on the kid
hauntedmarshmallow
I assume being adopted is hard on all parties, but considering the alternative it’s definitely the best outcome in that situation

In my eyes I’ve always seen adoption as a transfer of guardianship, a 35 year old is their old guardian unless they have a disability
*own guardian
There's a lot more reasons that that. Next of Kin laws, Inheritance, Power of Attorney... all view adoption as possible requirement.
