Made a templet of the overall shape that I wanted.

And test fit it to a small trailer frame.

After cutting each side out of 1/2" plywood, I connected them with aluminum crossmembers.

Aluminum cross members fastened to the side wall.

I then put a 5' wide aluminum skin over the top, fastening it to the aluminum struts with chrome self tapping screws and rubber washers to prevent leaking.

I put adhesive rubber (grace vycor) between the two piece of aluminum to minimize the noise.

Form of the teardrop camper mocked up.

I cut open the rear hatch and connected it to the main body using a special hinge that shed water

and filled between the struts with styrofoam insulation.

I then built the back wall of the camper that would serve as the galley kitchen

and could fold down into the camper when on the road.

When upright, the wall locks into the rear hatch.

I cut out the door and trimmed it out with a lighter wood.

For the ceiling I used a black canvas, fastened by sandwiching it between the wood slats and the aluminum structure.

I used layers of plywood, glued and clamped them together to form the curvature above the door to she the water.

Put in the steel wheel wells and curved the trim over them

The trim was put together as one piece and screwed to the side wall from the back side to hide any fasteners.

The trim was made from multiple pieces and attached using a kreg jig.

an aluminum corner bead was nailed to the edge to stop the leaking underneath the aluminum.

Kitchen mock up with plug in cooler and propane stove.

Hatch fastened to rear bumper with custom handle.

Floating hardwood floor to finish off underneath the queen sized mattress.

Had some portholes milled out of aluminum and put them on either side of the camper.

Made a platform at the front that would hold the trunk for storage and the electrical.

Plugs were added to the kitchen to run the electric cooler among other things.

Canvas sides were made to cover the openings on either side.

Trunk to house the electrical box, converter, and some storage.

Built a front shelf in the curve with downlighting for more storage.

Finished product to haul behind my 1942 ford hot rod!

first outing!

In 1970 I built a pop-up camper trailer w/sink, stove, etc. Yours looks nicer!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was my plan!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it not template?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd be worried about someone walking off with my cooler while I was asleep or away from the campsite. Seriously cool build though!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was thinking bears, but that's probably just a problem up here in the frozen wastes. This is awesome!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The campgrounds that we go to are really amazing, the people are awesome and we know most of them already.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There is really not much to worry about

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is very nice @op how much did it cost in material to make?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

around $3k-$5k

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not bad at all! My friends father works at a company that sells them for about 6-10k

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can we be friends?!? Pleeeesse? You remind me of Tom Silva. We live in WA so it would be a great road trip for you!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TBH Id rather it be Bob Vila... lol

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What was the cost of this buil

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

around 5k, 10k-15k with labor

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Where did the majority of your cost from? I was planning to build a trailer and thinking more in the 2-2.5k range doing it myself...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Of course I guess a good rule is usually doubling your expected budget so 5k it is I guess.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

because you're awesome

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yeah, i didnt think that needed explainig. Seems obvious.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This is bitchin'. So neat. Does the galley have a cover for at night when you're sleeping and it's open?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yes! see the last picture! designed a canopy with the same canvas as the sidewalls.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

misread your question, the galley only has a canopy, it is not covered up.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The hot rod is nice too

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Thanks, built it myself!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

At this particular moment, don't have the money, nor the skill to build one. Love the idea of low-weight camping! /2 one day!
