Shrike is fucking terrifying, just saying.
sybreal
Amazing books. I have all 4 on my bookshelf behind me.
lifeisadadjoke
This series is fantastic. A bit trippy at times (esp. the Time Tombs). All hail the Shrike!
GentlemanAviator17
Cantos style storytelling is the most underrated form imho. Well worth a read.
DesolateMirror
Good read.
Chodaboy50
I was shocked that Sol wound up having the most riveting and heartbreaking tale.
TheOneTrueZippy8
I read the first accidentally (didn't know it was a series). "Good in places" is the best I can offer. Spirals wildly towards the end.
sjbrooksy7447
Just heard about this series the other day! Definitely going to check it out.
LynchlessMob
Then read it.
burtCoKain
These books had such an impact on me. I can't really explain.
KawaiiInari
Always looking for scifi/fantasy reads, the more 60s-90s the better. I do love Sanderson.
ex1tium
Check out a novel called Armor by John Steakley. He only wrote few books but I really liked this story as audio book
SamuraiChemist
Try some Hugh Cook. Anything from the Chronicles of an age of darkness series.
sticksosteel
Gah. What was it? Something about reality being delusions your brain tricks you into believing? Thought provoking, for sure.
My favorite was the last tale. It spoke to me so so so hard. Although I enjoyed all of them.
Gilgamech
benchp300
I started reading it on the advice of Imgur last week. Kind of fizzled, just not that into it.
Obligatorydownvoteguy
You should, the series is amazing
I heard no one ever really understands the motive of that spiky creature.
ImSorryOakIllPutTheBikeAwayJustGetOutOfMyHead
So good

Dan Simmons is one of the best sci-fi authors ever. His Illium/Olympos books are insanely dense. His horror stuff is great too.
DonnaNobleInTheLibrary
I like Ilium, but Olympos felt like he didn't know how to end it and thus Deus Ex Machina'd it.
I feel like he knew how he wanted to end it, but he finish it.
BrockEffingSamson
Hyperion is horror, too, even if it isn't classified as such.
locomotive
His last several historical fiction books aren't as good. Felt like "Look.How.Much.Research. I did for these. Now you must pay the price."
ThisUserNameIsReallyLoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I want to live in Martin Silenus' house. That's all I'm sayng.
Acarcan
Be carefull, you will lose your muse !!!
ChuckTingleBattlesTheAssGoblinsofAuschwitz
I just don't want to be in his bathroom when the portals close.
hapshaugnessy
I chased dune with these. They work but it takes a bit to get going. Like dune.
Yeah I just started and I’m waiting for things to take off but I’ll keep plodding along and hope for the best
It happens.
iHateMyselfButIHateYouMore
Oh no. I never got dune to take off. I was hoping this would be a good read and not a slog
AllOutOfEucalyptus
The entire Cantos is one of my favorite trilogies, but Fall of Hyperion is by far the best. I'd recommend going through Audible /1
if you don't mind listening rather than reading. Otherwise, the whole set is available on Amazon for about 4 ish. Enjoy!
I realize I said trilogy. It is a quadrilogy. I will go shame myself now.
Rijtjeshuis
I'm so bored. I guess if you are all so into it I should give it a chapter or two to see what's up
adiving
There's one problem with that... It's one of those books that gain momentum. It starts off a bit "eh ok..." and builds up. And all >
> characters have their own style, the detective reads as a detective etc. This should be a good tasting though. (link in next post) >

Yes, the beginning is a bit slow. But holy moly is it worth it… heretic tip: you can skip/skim the 1st and 2nd chapter or so.
I did that (found book at friend‘s house, wanted to see what‘s up, skipped and skimmed, got hooked) and don‘t think I missed out on anything
moocowincog
I remember being so confused about what Yggdrasil was supposed to be, I couldn't focus on the story.
Because you skipped or just in general? I just imagined it as a huge spaceship with a tree in the middle.
I imagined and/or misread that the ship WAS the tree.
trippingthelightfantastic
Just finished Hyperion and started The Fall of Hyperion. Outstanding reads :)
KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler
What's it about
swode
2,200 pages.
joejubee
I have them. Good books.
HeyQueef
The preists tale is bananas
HanSoslow
Work at golf course. See enough bananas.
LordSkippyTheMagnificent
He could have had a little better tree-tment.
Priests are bananas? I’ll pass
JOKERZwild86
Really? I find it ...apeeling
cbruza
I thought it a great first story for the book. really grips you in a wtf way
Arrrrgggggghhhh
7 years....
Too soon bruh
sweetrufus
The father's tale had me weeping when I read it, a year after my first was born.
Marsupialmessiah
Me 2. Its a very hard to swallow chapter.
mikeymikec
The father's tale was especially hard to read since I've been caring for my dad with dementia.
Litcube
SAME! My daughter was a year old when I read it and I couldn't handle it.
nycterelis
I found his both boring and interesting, but not particularly moving if for no other reason than I "knew" it would work out.
yourekillingindependentgeorge
I just started the audiobook of Hyperion the other day... It's really good so far.
The one with different VAs for the different parts?
DammitJim21
Just about finished.
Arook1
It was one of my first audiobooks
JolietJakester
just finished all 4, pretty excellent
d3ltabrav00
I was lost for most of it, maybe it's better listening in longer continuous chunks
FelixG
Nah the way it is written just makes it weird to follow.
digitist
I found it hard to listen to as well.
Same. I'm about halfway through.
Better be.
Oh good. I hated the harry potter narrator and need to spend audible credits so I can cancel *shakes fist* ++
ironiccomment
I found Jim Dale's voice to be very soothing to listen to (but that could be because I grew up with his voice)...
I thought he made everyone whiiiiiiineeeeeeyyyyyyy. But I'm also in a hard misophonia phase and need pretty flat, robotic reading right now
2) but I know the feeling. Something that seems weird to a new person but you never noticed because that's just the way it's always been
There is another version, with a different narrator, depending on which one you hate.
incorrecthorsestapler
My favorite series of all time. Do it.
More than Dune???
Yes. I don’t say that lightly.
Simmons wrapping love, the human experience, poetry, time, quantum communication, and omega point thinking into one narrative creates a 1/
significant bittersweet emotional resonance for me. Read this young, and it shaped the way I think even more than Dune did. 2/2
QuickbeamTheHasty
I've recently read Dune I and was not particularly impresed by it. I read its imperative to read the further novels in the series, right?
iPez
its my favorite scifi book so far!
SebastianCrab
Might I also recommend to you "A Deepness in the Sky" by Vernor Vinge. Hyperion was my favorite till I read Deepness.
oskardish
Read Enders Game.
electronicbovine
I really like Pandora's Star!
LaBotte
Me too !
bigdog838
not Foundation?
the premise is great but asimov character all have his particularly nerdy personality. even the woman and the robots.
calling a robot a nerd seems a bit nonsensical :))
MrNohbdy
I have the first one. Come get it.
ButteredNoodleDriver
Wait, was Becky or Jim first. I always forget somehow
DoctorAwesomeEsq
Sounds like a Shrike trap to me...
TheOnlyPtylerdactyl
Oddly threatening
Are we talking about a physical book that I have to drive long distance and possibly fellate you for or more of a "check my bio for link"?
"fellate a dude" v. ungendered. to perform mouth-stuff on a human person *fingerguns*
As opposed to a crab person?
Yes. Both crab genitalia and genital crabs would be turnoffs for me. Your mileage may vary
No
Ok then.
