This was my very first guitar, an Alvarez. It was flying the friendly skies with me, under the label of 'special handling', on a return flight from Montreal.

It never had a name. Eddard would be appropriate, if I were to name it now. I certainly didn't see it coming.

These punctures in the base of Ned essentially render the entire guitar unsalvageable, as they breach through to the inside.

My favorite photo of him and I. Taken sometime in early 2012, my senior year, and months before his watch was ended. United reps in my landing airport showed no sympathy when I presented them with Ned's remains and little more in terms of compensation (a small amount of credit towards another United flight.) I curtly told them where they could put their credit and told them to special handle my joy-pouch.

Thanks for the support, friends.
Having read many of the comments, I understand that it could have easily been my fault. It happened so long ago that I can't remember whether or not I loosened the strings.. but I probably didn't. It was, however, in a sturdier case than the one pictured. I only returned it to the original after the incident and there it's rested all these years.

The last photo was taken by my beautiful sister, Miranda. If you like it, then feel free to check out her instagram @mirandamcleroy

Joe Dirt: You just said your sister's hot! What a fuhreak! You're goin' to hell man!

This was a thing back in the day. The song is probably still on YouTube.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have that guitar, mine is named Ellie. I'm sorry for your loss @op.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sure, two small holes makes your cheap guitar "unsalvageable." Yeahhhhh, tell that to Willie Nelson.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I too play an alvarez. Fuck United. They're good guitars brent

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Did you slacken the strings off? Everything contracts when the hold gets cold

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

My exact fear. I never fly with my instraments

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

HEY GUYS LETS ALL ASK IF HE LOOSENED THE STRINGS FIRST

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

http://imgur.com/Y5TuNc7 I have the same story, my favorite guitar.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can always ask for cash and AFAIK, they have to provide it (check), you are not obligated to accept their vouchers

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

@op This is true! They offer the voucher first to see if you bite

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

him and me*

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you loosen the tension on the strings? If not, you are to blame. Guitar 101. Science

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

What DOESN'T United break/damage? Is a puppy next?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sorry for your loss, OP.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Did the ticket come with any strings attached? I'll show myself out now...

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

I mean they break teeth too, so....

same here... :D

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Didn't someone write a book about exactly this

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 2

AND a song

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes, this is a frac'n book. And they put a hole in our jogging stroller too. They are the worse, and the fact they still exist is amazing

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

How in the hell do they get through the hard shell case, the body of the guitar, AND break all the strings? I have put my guitars...

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Through hell, but the cases have always prevented any damage

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Looks like the case was not hard shell but rather pleather. You can bend those cases with 5 lbs on top of them. I blame the owner.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Yea 2nd look, it does seem kinda wimpy of a case. I can stand on my case and hop without it caving in. Still, they had to do something...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Insanely destructive to do that much damage to a guitar.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sometimes luggage isn't secured properly, if it gets loose during the flight and the plane hits turbulence it can fuck shit up.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

wiggle room in cases like that, yet the case from what we can see looks perfectly fine. Guarantee he didn't detune it and is blaming United.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They can bend but it should show SOME warping or damage if the tip was bent enough to destroy the headstock like that. There's a lot of

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So you didn't loosen the strings? Temperature and pressure changes in transit can expand or contract the wood, which can cause the tight 1/3

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

I'd be surprised if the contraction snapped the neck, but yeah, it doesn't seem to be handling.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

strings to snap, or worse, break the neck or headstock. Breaking the entire headstock off without damaging the case reinforces this. 2/3

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Source: worked as a luthier's assistant for two years at Chicago School of Guitar Building. This whole post is really iffy.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Also, the body punctures hardly make the guitar "unsalvagable". They can easily be patched and any internal damage repaired. 3/3

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Did you detune your guitar before hand? Ive seen necks snap from change in altitude.

9 years ago | Likes 87 Dislikes 1

I was going to ask this. Something about the pressure change on a tensioned neck and strings

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Most storage areas on planes get super cold, which causes the strings to constrict, snapping the neck. It's best to take them completely off

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

of course! Thanks. I detune my guitar except when I'm playing. with auto-tuners these days it's so much easier to tune again.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

All cargo compartments are pressurized (speaking of transport planes), and share the circulated air from the cabin. So same temperature

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

Not all. Our rear cargo compartment isn't part of the enviro system and also doesn't have any heat. Instruments and animals will die.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They don't share the circulated air, but they have separate environmental controls, they're regularly used to transport high-priority 1/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

cargo which means both needing to be able to freeze (fresh food and such) or very specifically not (anything that would be damaged), 2/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

so they can do either depending on the flight's requirements. 3/3

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So United breaks Hispanics AND Asians. Got it.

9 years ago | Likes 173 Dislikes 5

Alvarez, getting it. Haha

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

United breaks everyone. Even themselves.

This is such a catchy song, too

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think OP was referencing that and wanted to show his own experience.

And still it persisted.

Dude, this guy lost a dear thing to him and you joke about this?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 51

Welcome to the internet

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Found the person who shouldn't be on the internet!!

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People make these jokes about cheating, losing family members, 9/11. THIS surprises you?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I understand, but this guy is in distress and as a musician myself an instrument (especially one this special) is very sad.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh I understand, I also practice the musics. I'm just saying, people are ruthless; even if it's a bit harsh, it doesn't surprise me much.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah :p

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

@OP I'm curious what happened to the case. Was it also punctured and broken near the head?

9 years ago | Likes 99 Dislikes 0

Wrong kind of case for flying. OP's fault.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 89

Don't know why you're downvoted. Anything not steel reinforced and welded shut won't survive flying...apparently.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

What makes it the wrong kind of case? I'm genuinely curious and I don't play, so I don't know what makes a case good or bad.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Also, should have a lock in it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

OP's case is a chipboard. It's on the cheaper end of cases you can buy. Flight cases are usually carbon fiber, and have way more support on

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

And around the inside. Especially around the head/neck. OP's case has no support on the head/neck. And it looks like he didn't loosen his

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Strings before flying.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Think of a case like a bike helmet. Needs support/padding inside and a hard shell outside.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

There's flight cases, the black ones with metal bracings, but those are mostly used by professionals. This case should've protected better

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is the case the guitar came in, basically made from cardboard or thin plywood. They make "flight cases" to specifically prevent this.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

They make "flight cases" if you used one of those you would need an axe to breach it

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's in a hard case this is not the wrong case for flying. The baggage handlers must've literally hurled it head first at a wall or somethin

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yes, because nothing ever shifts or moves in a plane full of unsecured luggage traveling at high speeds.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Chill man

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or something fell on it, or any manner of other things that simply happen. It's not a good hardcase if they could break it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

looks like they made the mistake of leaving it tuned. The drastic air pressure changes of flying can pop the neck of ya don't de tune it.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What dramatic air pressure change is this? The holds in most planes are pressurised the same as the cabin.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A drop in temperature is more likely to cause the strings to tighten to the point of breaking a neck of a guitar.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah i second this.. Sturdy case like that, handlers would have to be TRYING to to actually damage it.

9 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 1

Also, sorry for your loss OP.. Would hate to have that happen to one of mine.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Flying with a firearm we watched the baggage handlers throw the hard gun case on the ground from shoulder hight

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I don't think that's a very sturdy case... Lots of hardshell cases are weak. You want something actually good it's a few hundred bucks min

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You can get good flight cases for around $75

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No argument here that flightcase would've been better. But that's a fucktonne of damage, like there was no case at all

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Who makes those?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you're in Europe, check Thomann

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gator cases

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My brother worked as a luggage handler for an airport in southern California. They had luggage throwing competitions.

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 1

Your brother is a piece of shit.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Totally

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Jesus christ, that's it! Never travelling with instruments ever

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Generally a good idea, no one wants to hear a shitty cover of Wonderwall at 2AM when they're just getting that perfect buzz going.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

Get a wooden crate, put it in that with a lot of packaging material and padding. The guitar case itself seems to have no padding whatsoever.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well, ok, it's lined with something that looks soft, but that's not padding. Anything you ship that needs to stay whole, put it inside some-

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Check out what they did to this persons cello a few years ago.

9 years ago | Likes 921 Dislikes 3

Tis' but a splinter.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

POOR CELLO! As a cellist, this makes me sad

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

As a non cellist who enjoys cello music, me too

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

oooooh if that was my cello i'd be in prison and United would have a new job opening... because i would kill someone.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Meh, that'll buff out.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's why most cellists pay for the extra seat. Cause all airlines suck with instruments.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

*professional cellists.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Any cello worth flying with costs far more than any seat. Given potential temperature variances and even just shifting loads, buy a seat.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Are you saying we should fly Delta?

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Haha, well played. I actually try for WestJet and Southwest whenever I can.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Fuck southwest. Trash airline.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hate southwest

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I flew united once.they threw my bag & a nailpolish in it broke& got all over all my clothes.Had to toss all of it :/ shoulda dble bagged it

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

As someone that plays the cello...

9 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 1

Violinist here, and I cringed. I should not have moused over that. Gore, I can handle. That... gyah...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Fellow violinist high five! Gently! So we don't hurt our fingers!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How is that even possible?!

9 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

There were drugs inside.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We're talking about united here.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Overbooking

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is a weight limit to those cases. United apparently wanted to test the limit and exceeded it, repeatedly. Assholes.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Baggage handlers throw the stuff on and off the plane. It's crazy the disregard that stuff is shown, even with handle with care/fragile tags

9 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

It was a United flight then I assume their baggage handling is on par with their human handling. https://imgur.com/RQCav0h.gif

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

JUST USE A FUCKING SLANTED GATE! It would cost less than that monstrosity!

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

It looks like it's in a hard case so somebody probably opened it and stop the s*** out of it

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 1

That's not a hard case. That shit is made with vinyl.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Rage- so much rage.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

As a cellist...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Holy crap!! Did they offer to pay for a replacement at least? That's awful.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

if by "replacement" you mean a $400 student cello, yes. the cellist had to basically beg for money from Facebook to continue their career.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You're kidding...a student cello? A $400 student cello?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ohh wow this makes my heart hurt. Thats a four- or five-digit instrument. There's a reason people buy seats for their instruments on flights

9 years ago | Likes 194 Dislikes 0

Easily 5 digits

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It would probably be thrown off because of an "overbooking" issue

9 years ago | Likes 88 Dislikes 0

Four or Five? Decent ones are Five or Six.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

decent ones are not six figures exceptional ones are six to seven figures.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I play cello, every time I fly I get nervous when I bring mine along.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

There's a reason United's website clearly states those transporting cellos should buy a seat for them and not put them in the hold.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

I understand the frustration, but at the same time, people have to realise, there's nothing a ground handler can do that's worse than an 1/

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 11

aeroplane hitting turbulance. If you didn't pack it well enough for ground handlers fucking around, then you didn't pack it well enough 2/

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 9

for a plane at all. 3/3

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 9

Do you think that that pile of wood chips was caused by turbulence... Really? If turbulence can break a cello, it can break me.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeh, you do realize that it's not uncommon for people to be seriously injured in turbulence, right?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Also, cellos are *substantially* more fragile than humans.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Delta talking shit about united hmmm.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How the hell do they break the cello but not the case?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Cello is wood the case is a hard plastic

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They would have to puncture the case though. There is not enough space for that to bounce around in.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nice try, Delta.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Haha, my username is after the AI in RvB, not after the airline. I can see where the mixup could happen though.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was supposed to be a joke, Karen. *groan*

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

And by years, I mean two months ago. Sorry folks!

9 years ago | Likes 391 Dislikes 1

Why aren't you posting the link the the oc?

Suspicious username, there
