I’m healthy, as are my loved ones, so I’ve got no reason to complain about how hard this pandemic is for me. Between no work and all my plans canceled though, it did leave me with an overwhelming amount of free time. I’m not great at sitting still, so after a few weeks of staying home and watching the entirety of Hulu, I decided I needed an adventure. Albeit a socially responsible one because I try to do my part, ya feel?
This led to what has been dubbed, the Reno Rim Route (I have a thing for alliteration, sue me). This path was designed to connect pavement, dirt roads, single track trails, and cross-country bushwhacking into a loop around the greater Reno area. The route stays up in the hills primarily, only dropping down when necessary (social distance ftw!).

After poring over maps and scouting unknown areas the best I could (or felt like that day), I set off! Backpack loaded and short shorts on, I began hiking.

It felt good to move again after being so cooped up lately. Fresh air, the warmth of the sun on your face, and a cool evening breeze. That's my kind of living.

Almost immediately I was blown away by the wildflowers, and the wildlife. Reno is on the edge of the Great Basin, a high desert most people consider to be relatively empty outside of interstates and legal brothels, having grown up here I knew that wasn’t the case but even still, I have never seen such lively nature so close to town.

Deer, horses, pronghorn, coyotes, bears, and marmots, I had no shortage of furry friends keeping me company. (Pronghorn)

I wear a size 13 shoe in comparison, thats a healthy bear! (Black Bear)

I also had plenty of not-so-furry friends out there! (Folding Door Spider)

I mean look at this slithery nope rope. (Great Basin Gopher Snake)

This ham wouldn't move till I took his picture. (Long Nosed Leopard Lizard)

Everyone loves a hot stone massage. (Desert Collared Lizard)

In addition to all the critters, the wildflowers were absolutely going off! I never would have covered any ground if I took all the flower pictures I wanted to, but here are a few of the ones I took. (desert paintbrush)

(Veatch's Blazingstar)

(Dwarf Lupine)

(Pale Agoseris)

(Whitedaisy Tidytips)

(Kellogg's Sand Verbena)

(Tansyleaf Evening Primrose ft. DJ Bee Butt)

In the end the route ended up being 115 miles with 16k’ of elevation gain over 5 days. It was incredible, and far more than I could have hoped for. And it thoroughly kicked. my. ass.

I’m going to go rest my feet for a bit, I hope you guys are finding ways to get through these wild days.

(MV edit: this is after postholing through thigh deep snow for 14 miles, I was rotating between pairs of socks every couple hours trying to dry them out a little bit but there was only so much you can do in that kind of sufferfest!)

Yay Nevada!

Hey, I live here!

I sometimes forget how beautiful the surrounding of this city can be

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It was cool to be close enough to see the city I know but also feel like I was so far away exploring completely new areas

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kellogg's Sand Verbena is my least favourite cereal

You know, I respect their decision to branch out into bold new flavors but I agree 100%

Hi fellow local! Nice to see one of us make front page!

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Awesome. I'm about to do Santa Monica Mountains backbone trail. My kind of social distance. Thanks for sharing.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I had never heard of that before so I looked it up, seems like a rad trail! Have fun out there

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Looks like a fun loop. Done a few sections of that for sure. Where are the Tahoe pictures!?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Caught a brief view of Tahoe on my approach to Mt. Rose, more hiking will be done up there after the mountains have thawed a bit

Dude change socks more often, great way to hurt yourself

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That day I was changing them as often as my spare pair would dry haha I was postholing through snow for 10+ miles so it was a losing battle

Nice to see the local area on FP! (Hi from South Lake)

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I came here to say the same!! And was excited to see all the other locals! Hi from Gardnerville!

I have fond memories about some ladies from the reservation near Sparks from back in the mid 80’s.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Awesome! I used to love hiking around North Lake Tahoe and Truckee when I lived out there!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Love Mount Rose, super jealous.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Woohoo. Renooooo

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Love driving over the summit by Mt Rose. Also love seeing the wild horses outside of sparks.

As a Reno native, I approve! And if you do more of this, check out HikeGoo for your feet! Stuff is amazing!

Hello from southern Nevada! Nice trip

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Beautiful picture, especially the one with the wild horses!

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As pointed out they are not great for the local ecosystem, but they really are a beautiful sight nonetheless. I came across a few big herds

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*feral horses. They are an invasive species that are very detrimental to the rangeland out here.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Great shots, looks like an awesome adventure.

5 years ago | Likes 130 Dislikes 0

They might be great shots, but I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It wasn't a bear. It was you. Bamoozleddd

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks! It was a pretty unique experience!

To go from desert to scrub, then mountains, forest and snow this shows the west is the best. We are lucky to have it.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Weird to say but I found it fascinating how Covid seemed to spread across the country in a similar pattern as the pioneers-sort of.If you

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Do t count that sneak in from Wash state....

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

100% agree. The variety of landscapes packed into such a relatively short trip was really incredible

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

DJ bee butt lol. I hope to do the PCT with or without my daughter when she graduates high school in 6 yrs

5 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

If she likes hiking, absolutely do it. My parents took me along some of the Pacific coast trail b/w my Jr and Sr year. Still fave trip.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Aw thats awesome! I met a few parent/child pairs while hiking it in 2016. Such a cool experience, both solo and to share!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pics of the short shorts or it didn't happen.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There it is. Seconded.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Always gotta leave them wanting more, thats the art of seduction

That looks like an awesome hike. Although the wildlife maybe gives me a little pause.

Quite

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thanks! I get that, but they sure didn't give me any issues. Just gotta give them the respect they deserve!

5 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

I've been chased by a bear over in Galena, last time I ever go out hiking. Good on you though!

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

It reminds me a bit of "A simple walk into Mordor"

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What kind of spider is that?

5 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

Scientifically known as Nope nope

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Best I can tell through research is that it's an Antrodiaetus montanus, a species of folding door spider

5 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Nooooooope

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I mean, it definitely looks pretty furry...

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So...this spider not only opens doors but FOLDS them, too?

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

If it can do that to a door, just imagine the ease with which it will snap your spine.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

See. None of this is ok. Not one bit.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I lived in Dayton for three years, this makes me miss the desert more. NV is such a rad, beautiful state.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

HIGHLY underrated! (but dont tell anyone)

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have and nobody believes me. Northern Nevada doesn't exist to people who have never been there. And I'm fine with that.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Outside of Vegas the state is largely invisible to the outside world, and that's one of it's greatest qualities!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You need to keep your feet drier next time

5 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 2

Also rubbing baby powder on his belly, wearing a PT belt, change socks, stay hydrated, put 3 aspirin in his shoes, and a caffiene IV drip.

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

What’s with the aspirin in the shoes type deal?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh believe me, I agree! I hit snow for 10-15 miles toward the end of it and was pushing through to finish so they never got to dry that day

5 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 0

I had wet feet my last hiking trip. There was just no help for it. All my skin peeled off after. It was super gross

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Should probably look into waterproof leg wraps for that sort of stuff or at least gaiters if you didn't have them

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Wool socks, my dude. Trust a wildland firefighter.
