Grandma: 1915-2011
Mom: 1948-2012
The Dog: 1996-2011
I miss all three of you so much.
Mother's Day has been empty for years. For extra fun, tomorrow would be mom's birthday!
Anyway, someone asked me for funny memories: there was the time Mom lost her car keys in the freezer, or when Grandma scared off two muggers when she was over seventy, or that time the dog ate an entire bag of corn meal and ran around the house expelling cheerio-smelling farts with visible dust clouds.
(Edit)
Okay, here, let me share a little about all of them:
Grandma: She was born in Puerto Rico, and left her family behind to attend college in the US. Completely on her own, this woman graduated in the 1920s/30s, when women weren't supposed to do such things. Her first husband died in a hunting accident, but her second marriage lasted - and she never remarried after Grandpa died. Grandma was independent, living in an apartment in, I kid you not, the building next to the NY Natural History museum. She was tough, spunky, but always knew correct etiquette, and spoke in a flaless transatlantic accent (there was no sign of her hispanic heritage in her accent, though she could slip into Spanish easily if needed). I took care of her in her last few years, when dementia took hold - that's the state she was in during this picture.
Mom: Mom was amazing. The kindest, sweetest person on the planet - before meeting her, my Dad was Scrooge. After meeting her, he became Scrooge at the End of the Novel. To this day, whenever mother's day comes around, legions of peopel whos elives she touched post on mine or my sister's Facebook about her. She passed away in a scuba diving accident on her and Dad's 40th wedding anniversary. Dad is currently retired in Las Vegas, with his kid sister living with him - he's doing much better now, and I check in with him often (dad is a fantastic person).
Scotty - a spunky li'l Bichon Frise, we had Scotty for fifteen years before cancer and old age took him. He was incredibly friendly with people and other dogs, extremely affectionate (if you visited, he would snuggle in your lap), and the most accomplished food thief ever. This guy knew how to unzip suitcases, how to fool you with a distraction, and how to pull out drawers to climb onto the counter. NO FOOD WAS SAFE!
I posted all of this because I got the FB update while at work, and needed a moment of catharsis. I work in caregiving now... which is interesting, considering that I took care of Grandma.

Grandma was a tough, intelligent young woman from Puerto Rico who worked her way through college in the 1920s/30s. She was AMAZING

She lived in the building next to the NY Natural History Museum, too. I took care of her in her last few years.

Mom was genuinely hilarious, incredibly kindhearted, and singlehandedly turned my dad from Scoorge to Scrooge at the End of the Book.

And that dog, Scotty, made peopel who "hate small dogs" love him. Hah!

So, to be honest, the happy memories are great, and it's just around this time of year when I get a little melancholy.
TheLastNalbinder
Can you share a funny story about one of them?
ridureyu
Well, there was the time my mom lost her car keys in the freezer.
joe6paques
That's pretty good.
TheLastNalbinder
You could say it was a... cold case
ridureyu
The best part was, she went looking for those keys for HOURS. And my Dad just casually went, "Honey, have you looked in the freezer?"
ridureyu
He guessed it perfectly.
Twinklepot
He *hid them* perfectly.
