Bringing my gameboy back from the dead

Mar 21, 2018 7:45 AM

i'v had my old gameboy on a shelf for years. I started watching lots of youtube vids on how to mod it so thought i would give it a go go. May the force be with us!

the poor boy was very dirty and battery contacts had some corosion on them so let's get to work!

opened this mofo up and cleaned it on the inside a bit before taking it all apart

threw the contacts in some vinagar and it cleaned them up like a new

i popped them in, fired it up to try them out and it lives again, sorta...

After turning it on i noticed i was gonna need some more elbow grease to get these wheels going! Vertical lines are kinda common and can be fixed with a soldering iron

Taking off the rubber strip to get to the problem area so we can apply some heat under the screen and bring those dead lines back to doing their job

This was the longest process of the whole shabang and it took about 25 minutes to get things looking like this boy will see the light of day again

The screen its back and kicking like bruce lee!

Chucked in a game to be sure all went as planned and it's looking damn fine but we can do better!

Behind the lcd screen is the green polarizer/reflector glued on to it and this is another adventure in it's self to take off. Since it's in a tight space too much movement when peeling it off can damage the ribbon cables so just like a midget at a urinal, i was gonna have to stay on my toes

after a couple of swear words and sweating bullets later, we got the sticker off and no damage done

Time to give the inside of the glass a quick cleaning with some rubbing alcohol to make some no pieces of glue are left behind to get in the way

Time to add the meat and potoatoes of this whole stew, the backlight along with the polarization film that comes with it

just gotta drop it in and do some more soldering to light this fire up!

i added a bivert chip as well to help increase the contrast and make the whole thing pop! I got all caught up into installing the chip that i forgot to take pictures, my bad guys

Now with a little bit more of soldering the blacklight screen wire into place along with the chip, we ready to see if this kitten has claws! ENGAGE!!

SUCCESS!! hello again my old friend, you have been missed. I added a new glass screen cover along with cleaning the shell inside & out so to get maximum coolness out of it....and there it is.

Looking dapper AF now!

Time to find a couple of games from my childhood and live the dream with some style!

I had a dang damn fun good time doing this mod and this won't be the only one i build. thanks for watching and see you crazy kids next time!

I need to find my Gameboy pocket...

Awesome! I did the same thing to a GBA. Game Boys are surprisingly easy to mod and work on.

Would love to spruce up my old brick, but I'd probably break it trying. Still works aside from a line up the left of the screen.

I was half expecting someone in the comments to mention emulation.

It's absolutely ugly.

I had one when I was a kid, but somebody stole it out of my mum's purse when we were at church. That's the day I walked away from religion.

Mine was stolen too. It even had my name on it in black sharpie! Luckily I still have all the games in my original GameBoy bag.

That blue glow looks sick as fuck wish I had the balls to do this but the childhood memories just can't let me do it

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mine looks so washed out. Cant really get a good contrast. Dont know if that was always like that. Are there different screens on this one?

8 years ago | Likes 125 Dislikes 0

if you added the bivert chip you gotta be sure to add enough solder in the 3 holes to touch the bottom of the board, i had a similar issue

The reason for this is because the screens rot from age, which degrades the image, gives it a washedout feel, depends on how well you kept it

Actually did really take care of it and didnt use it for a long time. And it's old of course. About 23 years.

But might still be possible

A midget at a urinal... I dropped my old boy in the sewage once, fished out out, let it dry, worked good as new! Nintendium is magical

I have many questions...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was moving when I was 8, fell out of my bag and right in the rain drain sewage thing. Still works today

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok, I was really curious how the midget and the urinal were going to fit into this story

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lmao I forgot I put that. It was one of the descriptions in the post. By op

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah, I just skimmed the descriptions int he post so I missed that somehow.
