Fantastic news, these people have been overworked and underpaid for far too long.

Oh, they're organizing under IATSE. That's great. Thats a very strong union. pretty much to entertainment what Teamsters are to logistics

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

With how prevalent vfx is I would have thought they were organized already

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We're entering a new golden age of organized labor. I've heard people in fields that would never have thought about organizing before starting to play with the idea.

Union Strong! Good on them.

I support almost all unions. If I had the means right now, I'd be trying to donate to the SAG-AFTRA and other active strikes. If the gamer union drive results in a strike then I'll not be hurt if it impacts any games I enjoy. They deserve a good life before any increase to my comfort.

Unionize and never be at the mercy and will of your boss again.

NICE! it's about time.

Yeah should have done it before endgame, they would have had a ton of leverage and would have been able to completely halt production of one of the biggest titles.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

On the flip side, studios have tons of yet to be released films that are their only potential income now that the writers and actors are on strike and can't film new shit. All that stuff in post-production now halts took cutting off one of the largest sources of future revenue studios were counting on in order to outlast the writers and actors. Now, all they got is existing released content, which generates almost no revenue after a few month.

If you work on a multi-billion dollar franchise you should get a little more than minimum, jesus christ... these films wouldn't exist without everyone involved.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Hey, if they gave more than minimum, they wouldn't be multi-billion dollar companies .

Gotta say, this renaissance of organized labor is a real ray of sunshine in an otherwise bleak ass timeline

I hope this is the start of a huge fucking wave of unionization. Let’s fucking go!

2 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

As someone with some well-earned grudges against unions, I’d rather just see a huge wave of crappy employers magically becoming decent without the mess unions can bring… but this is certainly the next best thing, and well past time.

I mean, coming from European mainland, why the fuck aren't there just general, national, all-purpose unions that any company above 25 employees MUST join, while they also protect the rights of all employees that ask for help, even of smaller companies?

VFX and video game programming pay poorly because of the enormous pool of college grads and community college associates programs churning out kids who fantasize about working in the industry with no interest in other practical applications of their skills. Nobody wants to write SQL scripts and Excel macros or design billboard graphics. I love working in IT for it's diffusional meritocracy -- talent and choosing to work where humanity needs someone to do the job.

I work in the video game industry and I don’t see the poor pay rates you’re referring to. The “crunch” of 70+ hour weeks and low job security are huge problems at many, many studios. The book “Press Reset” by Jason Schrier on this topic is as fascinating as it is appalling.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It you're working 70 hours and have no job security, it's probably not a valid salary. Those count when looking at pay bands. If you're getting $120k/yr in those conditions, it's not the same as making $90k a year as a DBA doing straight 40 hr weeks with low fear of layoffs. You're still in competition with the incredibly low corporate cost of your replaceability because of a over-saturated market.

They should make the t-shirts in green screen green and refer to the union as 'the green team'

VFX crews are the backbone of nearly every movie post Terminator 1 & some Henson/Lucas/Weta stuff that came after (which still relied heavily on VFX).

2 years ago | Likes 531 Dislikes 3

And their conditions and wages have not kept up with the rest of the industry. I heard they are treated really, really poorly.

I thought, I thought moon landing was cgi back in the days ?

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Adjusted for inflation, the movie Apollo 13 cost more than the actual mission.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Worth it

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Should have been double a mission. They were extremely underpaid pioneers.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

No, no, Stanley Kubrick shot on location didn't want to rely on the cheap looking stop motion cinematography of the day.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I really want to see a conspiracy theory movie where Kubrick actually gets to the moon in secret to do all the filming. And even the feds don't know he actually pulled it off

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Some junior fbi agent gets put on this joke of a tip. Kubrick has moon rocks(has to be stolen from NASA, duh) but then find that NASA didnt ever bring these particular rocks back. Follows clue and interviews remining astronauts and engineers to learn that he did actually film on location and of course NASA and (some bad guy agency, chinese maybe) both want the secret of how he did it. Idk thats as much as i can think of rn.

About time, the work culture in VFX is apalling

2 years ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 1

Yeah it is. I have a degree in computer animation and I was told because I have a vagina I'd never get a job because it's unsafe to be in a room with all men.

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

wtf lol

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thats madness. The agencies I have been at have been total frathouses though... Still excluding talent so people can act like assholes is not ok.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same and heard many stories from friends who passed over by talentless jerks that were bros with someone in the company. Didnt help we all graduated right when the industry crashed. Nothing like competing with dudes who had 10-20yrs exp. From all the horror stories I am glad I never got into the industry. Went into carpentry but atleast my boss is awesome. Still run into sexism but not from him.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately true. Just look at the shitstorms in Activision and Ubisoft. Disgusting incel fucks.
