I’m just over 24 hours sober. I cried through my whole first meeting. I’m really proud of myself and if you need help too, I highly recommend.

www.aa.org

FP Edit: you guys are amazing. Thank you from the bottom of my newly sober heart. I got so tired of waking up feeling like shit. And this weekend I very nearly died. It has to stop, or I will. Sooner rather than later. If you’re struggling too, please don’t hesitate to reach out. It’s okay to need and ask for help. A lesson that nearly took me too long to learn. Thank you.

My brother never learned to ask. I'm so glad you did. I know how hard it will be, but I have confidence that you can do it! You got this!!

Graced with 30 yrs. What I didn’t know then? The day at a time thing isn’t false modesty, it really is the key. Best wishes going forward.

@OP i had one of those until i got a year and then gave it to another newcomer, saying they should do the same. good job :)

One day at a time my friend. Also, as you'll find out, the big book is a life saver, but getting a sponsor is an anchor. God Bless!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Man, every time I see these I forget their for the aa, and I'm like" oh, he's been in the illuminati for 24 hours, congrats to him. Oh w..."

@OP IDK about you, but lot of my friendship withered away as they all still drink heavily. Stay strong. Life gets much better here on out!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You go sober fucker! I love you.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My dad never quit, and it killed him. Thank you, for his sake.

ODAT, baby!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Literally just do 24 hours of not drinking and repeat as many times as you can. That’s how it works :) congrats.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The phone may feel like it weighs a thousand pounds. Kick some ass and just remember how good life will be 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One day at a time. Even after 32 years... it's a evil tempting beast.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

32 years?! Wow! Congrats to YOU.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Those horsemen are hideous for sure

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's worth it. One day at a time... (Now an old timer)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You weren't given that. You fucking EARNED it :) Good on you!

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I made a dumb mistake on Friday night, flew too close to the sun, and now I'm right there with you. Stay strong man, we can do this.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also, this inspired me to go home and not drink. I was thinking about it, too.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I used to go to a bar that you could trade your chip in for a free drink.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Yikes

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Who the hell hands those out trick or treating?

8 years ago | Likes 272 Dislikes 8

Alcoholics?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Quitters who finally realized who's in the oval office

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 16

Started a similar thing today. No more spending all my money on alcohol and weed. Calling it: Sober November, or, "Sobember" if you will.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Gets easier day by day.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just celebrated 31 years this year. ONE day at a time. Proud of you - keep coming back!

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

Happy birthday!! I’ll have 3 years in January

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s incredible! I can’t even imagine that long. I’m gonna do it tho :)

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You will. One day plus one day plus one day. The joy and pride of it never end. YOU DID IT!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hell yeah dude. 10 years here, got sober at 22. Still doing it

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Quitter. +1

8 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

That +1 saved you from the down vote waterfall

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I like living on the edge.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Waterfall is the opposite of firefly

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn thought you got an invite to the Illuminati and you have to find the right vending machine to put the coin in.

8 years ago | Likes 96 Dislikes 1

Has to be in 24 hours

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Was looking for this. Am not disappoint

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like the way your brain works

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

AA would be better without all the faith stuff.

8 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 4

Agreed

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Smart recovery is a science based addiction meeting. I prefer it over AA but it's not as big as AA

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

For some its better and for some , worse. They would benefit from having a choice to pick from for sure.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Higher power is about believing in something outside of yourself. Doesn’t have to be God. It can be believing the sun will come up.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Give up one addiction for another.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

lame

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Is that just a US thing? I was watching a doc about US crime and addiction yesterday and literally everyone was name dropping Jesus and God.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Pretty much only US thing. But it isn't uncommon replacing substance addiction with religion addiction.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

lame description

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

12 step programs are not religious. religion assumes metaphysical realities. spirituality helps you connect with other people.big difference

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Emphasis in AA on your Higher Power AS YOU UNDERSTAND HIM (IT.) For many the group itself is their higher power! 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

But alcoholism is really a spiritual disease, therefore the treatment that works best for most people is a spiritual one.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

What do you mean, a spiritual disease?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It has physiological elements, but it's primarily a manifestation of hubris: of wanting to BE God, not follow God's 'rules.'

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

I disagree so much.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can anyone tell me a program like AA that's not religious. I'd like help but don't want the religion.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Look into refuge recovery (Noah Levine) it's spiritual but not religious. But not everywhere like AA.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I’ve been to numerous AAs in Oz, none of them are the slightest bit religious.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All they want you to do is find a higher power. I've known people who treat their sobriety as their higher power

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

There is SMART http://www.smartrecovery.org

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Emphasis in AA on your Higher Power AS YOU UNDERSTAND HIM (IT.) For many the group itself is their higher power!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

See if you have Smart recovery in your area. Either that or look for agnostic AA meetings. I prefer Smart to AA

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

There are secular/atheist agnostic AA groups. Might be hard to find outside of big cities in my experience

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

It is based off of Buddhist principles so I guess you could say it's "religious" but there is no diety.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

No, not at all! It stems from the Oxford Movement in the 1930s, which was a modern take on Christianity, based mostly on the Gospel of Luke.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good for you. Keep not drinking.

8 years ago | Likes 372 Dislikes 4

Cheers! Oh wait...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll drink to that

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m gonna really try.

8 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 3

You can do it! We believe in you!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One day at a time, man. Just one day at a time. You can do this.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Play games instead alot more expensive and intoxicating

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good luck @OP!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We all believe in you. Even if some of us are nit sure how to spell believe...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Or not

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Do or do not. There is no try

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

-broda

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't fucking try. Do. Never think try. You HAVE to do this or you'll regret it every day. Don't go near bars. No liquor stores

8 years ago | Likes 88 Dislikes 2

As yoda said "do or do not there is no try."

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

You got this!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You have to fill your time with other things. Any hobbies , exercise, anything. Get with friends and just hang out

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

I have hobbies. I just enjoy them more with booze.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Soon enough those 24h will be 2yrs, congrats

8 years ago | Likes 182 Dislikes 1

I don't know you, and this is crazy, but I'm proud of OP! Stay sober, baby.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you. I can’t even imagine 2 years right now.

8 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

Buckle up, it's almost 2 years.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You'll do it. First today. You got two days then soon two weeks.... Good luck God bless.

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

We can :) You'll get there!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Don't try to imagine 24 years, just take it one day at a time. Tomorrow is a fight you don't have to think about, just focus on now.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Step by step bro, congrats

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Nevermind that... Just don't drink today, and hit up a meeting!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s been 2 years, how’s it going?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One Foot In Front of the other and you'll eventually be there. Don't lose focus.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Before you know it you'll wonder how you ever lived like that.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aim higher. Sober until I died.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

When?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

They say take it one day at a time for good reason, but op is right, 2 years will sneak up on you faster than you think if you keep 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Do not think about years... think today.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Up with the work and keep doing what's right for you.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just keep imagining ‘tomorrow.’ I have cried through plenty of CoDA meetings - not the same but nonetheless - you’re not alone.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's all hard shit to get off of. Smile. Keep going strong.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Two years is peanuts my good man. Everybody can fight 10 seconds. Just keep adding up 10 seconds more. And more. And more.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Thanks Kimmy Schmidt :P
