Where did they think the terms "fast forward", "rewind " originally came from?

don't forget pause, or 'la cucaracha', as it should be called

Saw each one in theater's with my dad, he told me recently that taking me to see Fellowship of the Ring when I was 10 is his fondest memory

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I watched the two towers on VHS. My stepdad rented it from movie gallery

I'm still here. It's cool though I've got doritos.

I was there, Gandalf. When the strength of VHS failed...

I still own VHS tapes. I have no VCR, but still.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I still have a ton of VHS tapes. I have a VCR too, but unfortunately it didn't survive my last move-just don't have the heart to toss it

Confession time: When I set the DVR to record something I still refer to it as "taping".

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same

Was in a business class recently and mentioned the Betamax-VHS branding case. Blank faces everywhere.

Tape cassettes? hmmm

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This last week I had a kid in my class ask me what a VCR is, Id mentioned it in passing... I died a little inside... I felt so old...

I tend to show my age when I say "I have this on tape" instead of "recorded."

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would say 8-track, but that is just one long continuous loop of tape...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Side question, but how do elves not get bored of living? I imagine after 3K years you've seen it all.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

or the ones who will never know what trading a cassette tape felt like after listening to the same one all day at school.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

We even had LOTR on VHS

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I still have LOTR and the original Star Wars Trilogy on VHS

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I asked my kids a question about The Matrix the other day. They just said 'What's The Matrix?'. Same with Fifth Element..

Kids wouldn’t care about vhs because it’s not HD.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are HD vhs:s our there tho :D

rewind (v.) Noun meaning "mechanism for rewinding film or tape" is recorded from 1938. Related: Rewound; rewinding.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You telling me you're from the 30s, pal?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Please be kind and rewind

8 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

We had a brown and black one with that plastic wood labelling on top

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

We had a black one with white trim. Jesus I'm getting old...

From reel to reel tape decks.

It actually HAS been 84 years. The first reel to reel tape deck, the 1934 A.E.G. Magnetophon K1:

Well I'll be damned, got to learn something new today, thank you!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fast forward and rewind came from reel to reel audio tape recorders. Video is so new age.

8 years ago | Likes 112 Dislikes 1

Besides, “fast forward” makes sense regardless of the medium.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True. But to be fair vhs was pretty much an identical design

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Still not the origin

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Good point

My boss brought a few VHS tapes into work one day... the 17-18yr olds didnt know how to work the VCR or even how to put them in right

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

If they can't reason it out, that's bad.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Hmmm that's true for so many 17-18yr olds though!! Boom!! Phrasing!!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I remember having to mess with the "tracking" knob to clear up any static and fuzzy picture.

8 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

Auto tracking or detgh

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And you could record in two different speeds!

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Commonly three on NTSC VCRs: SP, LP, and SLP/EP

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How about Laserdisc

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

I honestly don't know what Laserdisc is. Time to google I guess.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My first time seeing the star wars trilogy was on laserdisc. I'm 28, and it still makes me feel old as fuck.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I first saw Labyrinth on laser disc :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel sorry for the four people that bought a Laserdisc player.

I just shed a tear for Blockbuster. Gah I miss the nights we went there. PS2 rentals...

8 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 0

That place was lit on a Friday night!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I went to get a rental, my dad had HIS unpaid fee, pitched a fit, paid it, canceled his card and I got nothing. XD I was not happy.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Our libraries carry new release video games now.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One of my favorite jobs, actually. Worked at a big metro hub, talked about movies with customers. Ate candy for meals. Those were the days.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Man, I don't. No one could ever agree on a movie and we'd end up with 3 and no time to watch them all and then late fees.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's apparently a few Blockbusters left doing rentals. Mostly in Alaska

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's the circle of life. Blockbuster wiped out independent stores and now they are the ones being taken out.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I still go to the Family Video down the street every Friday.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Greetings from the future. Invest in Apple before this thing called an "i-pod" comes out.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also, pull as many fire alarms as you can in the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11, 2001.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm old enough to remember NES game rentals from independent stores before Blockbuster rose to power. . . And now I've made myself sad :(

8 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I remember missing mom & pop shops for books and videos. Now, I miss the Blockbusters, Borders, and dwindling Barnes & Nobles.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You ol' so-and-so. Ha

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Used to rent sonic 2 and then 3 and I remember finding out Tails could fly AND THEN CARRY SONIC TOO!!! Good times

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Blue Moon Video. I will never forget you. RIP

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Video 4 Less in Rockford, IL. Had bins of pogs and a small popcorn machine you could fill up for like .25 cents. NES all weekend <3
