Been thinking lately of taking up smoking via a Pipe and quickly became overwhelmed with how much is involved.

longer the stem, the cooler the smoke. Cooler smokes are thus more enjoyable.

In my experience, anything longer than those that you have pictured above are only good for sitting. otherwise they're too unruly

Well, I guess you're old enough to be an idiot. I quit when I was 30 (I'm 49 now) after a pack a day for 10 years. It's very hard to stop.
