At home
• Clean regularly, you don’t need to clean the whole house on a weekly basis but some things should be done at least once a week, these are:
o Change your sheets. You sleep under these for 8 hours, that’s 56 hours’ worth of sweat, farts and dead skin cells, seriously you want to change this up regularly
o Clean the toilet, a brush and bleach. Seriously you don’t want that stuff going nasty
o Laundry, dirty clothes stink up the place if not done regularly.
o Bins, empty once a week or when they are full
• Put things away properly, if you are done with it, put it away not only is it tidy but you will know where to find it next time.
• Don’t put dish soap in the dish washer REALLY DON’T

Groceries
• Shopping lists, make a list before you go and stick to it.
• Store brand is usually just as good and much cheaper
• Buy some fruit but not more than you can eat
• When shopping for meals, ready meals are easy to cook but are loaded with salt and cost a small fortune. A simple meal of pasta, meat and sauce is cheap, easy and filling.
• In the UK at least most supermarkets offer home delivery services which save you all the hassle of shopping.

Saving Money
• Don’t buy things you don’t need
o If you aren’t sure ask yourself, “Will I die if I don’t have this until next week?”
• Buy the things you need before you buy the things you want ( a had a buddy and the first thing he bought with his pay check was an Xbox… great but he couldn’t afford food for a month)
• Credit cards, you should not spend more than you can afford to pay off in a single month unless it’s crucial. (Aka if you only get paid £1,000 a month do not have outstanding payments of more than this in a month including other bills)
o Emergency payments for things like car or medical bills are acceptable.
• Treat yourself, even if you are saving make sure to spend a little money on yourself from time to time.
• It is NEVER too early to start saving for your retirement
• Be realistic with your savings goal.

Car
• If you own a car, respect it. Keep it clean and serviced at regular intervals. If the time comes to sell it you will get more for it.
• Learn some basic mechanical skills, when you have a problem you may be able to fix the problem yourself or at least protect yourself from mechanics who would take advantage.
o Know how to change a wheel
o Know how to check your oil
o Know how to change light bulbs (This is one area mechanics make a fortune. Bulbs cost £5 and can be fitted in five minutes but they will charge £30 to fit them)
• Learn to Parallel Park.
• Learn to drive a manual

Work
• Know who manages you and who manages them. This way you know who to talk to when your own manager isn’t around.
• Accept that some days are going to suck. Don’t let it follow you home and never let it follow you back into work.
• Go out for drinks or meals with your co-workers from time to time. It’s good to be social.

Social
• Value your friends. Even if you can’t see them often send them the occasional message.
• Making friends is hard, so you should fight hard to keep them. If you fall out don’t hold a grudge admit you screwed up (There is no time you aren’t both at fault so just suck it up and apologise)
• When going out, work out ahead of time how you plan to pay. Don’t be that person that makes others pay for them. But also don’t be that person that pays for everyone else.
• If you are drinking, know your limits, don’t put yourself in a position where you will wind up in danger.
o If your group has a designated driver his / her soft drinks are paid for by everyone else (even if they never drink)
o On the subject DO NOT EVER drink and drive.
• Friends are the people that can see you at your worst and still be there, so stick with them when they are at theirs.

Relationships
• Relationships take work. Don’t expect it to be rainbows and sunshine all the time.
• Sometimes you will HATE each other.
• Even in a relationship you are allowed alone time, and allowed to keep secrets, just make sure that you don’t exclude them from your life.
• When it comes to sex you don’t and likewise they do not have automatic rights to one another.
• Communicate!

General
• Aim to get somewhere 15 minutes early and then leave five minutes earlier. If there are delays or traffic you can find alternative routes and still get where you are going on time.
(If you are starting a new job, try out your commute before you start. This will mean you can work out how long it takes under rush hour conditions.)
• Learn some basic first aid.
• Tip your wait staff, and your barber.
(On tipping, only tip when the service is good.)
• The saying don’t put all your eggs in one basket is a great lesson for life. Don’t pin all your hopes on a single interview, job, trip, relationship or anything else. If it fails (and it often will) you wind up depressed and upset.
• There are almost always multiple ways to reach the same goal. Try to find the one that works for you.
• Sometimes you will fail, learn from it and grow from it. Being an adult is not about having all the answers, it’s about knowing how to make mistakes.
• Learn how to read a map.
• At least once in your life try something that scares you
• Don’t be afraid to ask for help
• Learn to give and take feedback
• Learn some history especially history beyond your own nation.
(Try and find some lessons in there)
• Don’t start a fight if you don’t have to BUT if you have to fight, finish the fight before it starts.
(There is no such thing as a fair fight. Martial arts are largely useless in fights unless you study for years)
• Know and UNDERSTAND your rights.
o If you find yourself arrested, you are entitled to FREE legal advice.
o You may have the right to free speech but you do not have the right to be a dick
o Just because something offends you does not give you the right to shut people up.
• And finally, don’t cheat, don’t cheat at cards, don’t cheat at work, don’t cheat in relationships and don’t try and cheat at life. You will always lose out in the end.

*Front page Edit*: Umm wow I honestly expected this to die a cold and lonely death. For those wondering... I fail at most of if not all of these things, I did the soap in the dishwasher thing.

Since front page send... actually send whatever you want its cool!

As someone who grew up with no real parents. This is all helpful advice. thanks!!

As a southern young brit. Adulting now its spend almost all my money on rent, then have estate agents, mechanics, dentist and the 1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

government take the rest 2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Very rarely is store brand not acceptable: paper towels are one of those things. They're just paper.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@OP call a Jack a Jack and call a Smith a Smith, but always call a Whore a Lady. Their lives are hard enough and it never hurts to be polite

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"will I die if I don't buy this thing?" great! I don't have to pay my phone bill

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

this is too complicated. just drink a lot and whisper "what the fuck" under your breath a few times a day.

8 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 1

This made me laugh. And then cry hysterically

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wonder if my parents will let me move back in with them.

this is a repost not that it matters :P

No!

LEARN TO COOK!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sugar is your enemy in ready meals. Salt is necessary for survival, before we had preservatives we packed food in salt and brine

Floss

Always tip... Like literally always tip, servers make dick in America, and very often your percieved bad service is out of our control

I know multiple people that cheat at everything and are living phenomenal lives. Last item does not check out.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

Luck trumps everything. I used to sleep around with married women and men who had amazing lives yet still cheated on their partners, for e.g

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Only because it hasn't caught up to them yet.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

This. Cheat, then quit at some point is how most influential people I know got to where they are.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Good list. My motto is, everything in moderation. Partying, working hard, saving, spending, knowin and everything else. Even internet time.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

When we party we will party hard!

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.

8 years ago | Likes 385 Dislikes 3

I remember that song

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Everybody’s free!!

8 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 4

And good posture. Laugh at it when your young and pay for it when your older. Both are hard lessons to learn.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

What’s wrong with dish soap?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's no sex in the champagne room.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Depends on the champagne room.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

As a redhead, I agree

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Same

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks bud. That one goes way back.

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Waaasy way waaaaaaaaay back.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

#1 did your parents never warn you about dish soap in dishwasher. that had to be a fun lesson to learn lol

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In a pinch baking soda with a drop or two of dish soap will work.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh no I did it...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Highly recommend taking out the trash every night...it smells a lot more then you realize

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I don’t have that many bags. I had a problem with it smelling, ended up gettin a trash can that sealed better and disinfectant spray

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

About that eggs & basket thing and relationships - as a married woman should I now have an affair or something? :/

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, but make sure you still have friends and interests that are your own. Too many people become nothing but the relationship

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And make sure you can financially support yourself in the care of a divorce. You don't want to be dependant on one person for that

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I understand this. My bf and I are only just starting to evolve out of that after 3 years and it's challenging, but overall positive.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don’t leave zero tip, even for what you consider bad service. Tip 20% for good service.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I mean, if it's real bad I'm not tipping. Only had to do that once. She was rude to my little sister

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You still would have tipped her after being rude to a kid ?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You ate the food? She delivered the food?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

This is some sensible common sense nonsense

8 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 3

Yeah they offer no advice just tell you to do them

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I'd like to see OPs adulting qualifications first before I take all these in

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Agreed

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As an alleged adult, knowing and doing are very different. 99% of my problems would be solved if I started applying this advice.

8 years ago | Likes 176 Dislikes 2

Still not gonna....

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

But a bitch ain't 1%

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Then you should start working on which one's you can till they become second nature, then keep going.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Been unemployed since January and I approve of said above text and Thargrid sadly...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My problem is that I'm expected to clean up after others and that doesn't seem fair.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Don't have kids then.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I can still teach her, I just thought I would have help.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m just pissed off that nobody ever paid for my Diet Coke when I was the DD.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I went to a private bar to pick up my mom, bartender gave me free soda while I was waiting on her drunk ass to stop talking.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Why the dishsoap one? I already put it on the sponge, but for the parents ya know.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Because if you put dish soap in a dish washer your entire kitchen will be filled with bubbles promptly.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Which can actually be a good time, if you're inebriated enough.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I misread it, thought it said dish water not dish washer. My bad

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Me too! Was so confused

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where do you find the time to do all this shit AND write a list?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I found a little spreadsheet on reddit for cleaning with dailies, weeklies and monthlies to do for home upkeep. Helped me a lot

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A link for us peasants, please?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i started with something like this (link in next comment) and then made one specific for me in excel that i printed and put on my fridge.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and last, ive also seen white board or laminated versions of chore calendars so you can write on them with expo markers or whatever

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i also did the same thing for my brother's car maintenance schedule and put it into his google calendar app so he wouldnt forget too.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a lot of cleaning! If I did this, on top of my job, commute, and kids, I'd have basically no free time at all.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yea... im 23 and single with no kids. so it kinda works for me. and like i mentioned, i changed it to fit my place and what i need to clean
