In the day I had a job and worked 3 - 12 hour days; Friday through Sunday 7AM to 7:30 PM. 36 hours worked, paid for 40. Off work Sunday at 7:30, not due back til Friday morning.

Current job promised this seven months ago. Announced two days ago the big change would only be available to 25% of the employees- not including myself.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do 4 10s and the only way I get through it is having 3 days off to recover.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm already there for 8 hours. 2 more a shift and a 3rd day off? Don't mind if I do.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I’ve done 2x16’s and a 5 before when I worked in social care. Usually my 5 was an 8-2. 4.5 days off a week was great but the pay wasn’t good enough to enjoy it properly 😂

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I like 4 8's too

he was so ridiculously over-the-top in that movie. i love him for it.

There's talk about moving to a full time 32 hour work week which would be amazing

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Here in the USA? Or is that possibly in Europe somewhere?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We started doing this. It's nice. I'm pushing for two 20's now.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Our 4 10s turned into 4 10s and 2 8s......

Unions is the way man

We are union. The union has been fighting to get us more staffing for years. But no joy.

A lot of healthcare providers work 3 12 hour shifts and that’s considered full time.

It ain't bad, but be aware, you will likely be so very tired on your first day off.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

That's my secret, cap...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

So very tired compared to your normal baseline. No movie quotes will change the fact that you've just done done five days' worth of work in four.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used to work 4 12s a week. 4 10s is nothing.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I do 12 hour shifts. I only work 7 days in a 2 week period. I don't really like it. I never have energy.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Would love to as a summer thing. But arriving and leaving work in total blackness in winter would start to bother me eventually.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Plot twist two of those days is the weekend XD

steal away

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I fucking love four tens. Only asshole bosses disagree with that

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Since being in the military if I have to do 12hr shifts, "the panama" schedule is the only way to go. Every other weekend is a 3 day weekend.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This one entirely depends on whether you're hourly or salary, and whether your employer may make you work extra days. Job I'm at does a weird shift schedule where I work 3 12-hour shifts one week, and 4 12's the next. On paper I never work more than 3 days in a row without having either 2 or 3 days off. All good up until I start getting mandatoried to come in on my off days, then I'm working up to 6 days straight of 12 hour shifts. Also, whole thing makes doing anything on a work day a no go.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Man I worked at Graphic Packaging in Arkansas. In the finishing department where I was, it was mandatory 12 hour days 7 days a week. I lasted a month. Hard, fast work. The people there were like yeah we all have back, neck, leg probs, BUT THE PAY IS GREAT! I'm like...only because of the overtime.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

in my experience 4 10's was horrible. 3 days off was not as good as you think. the real problem was 40 hours a week. I will not work more than 30 any more.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

Yeah but you lose 10 hours of pay too

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

so?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You know the whole 4 day week is MEANT to be "work 4 normal days, get paid as much as when you worked 5 and STILL get more done because you're happy and rested"? It got twisted into "work the same number of hours over 4 days" by employers who really straight up refuse to process change.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Small changes, baby steps. Gotta play the long game here. First we get the 4 day week THEN we get the good hours.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Two 24s like a firefighter. 5 days off

firefighters aren't exactly off on those days. they still gotta work out n shit.

Done the 4x10(10pm-8am Mon-Thur) also done 3x12 (6am-6pm Tue-Thur) day's one week and 3x12(6pm-6am Mon-Wed) + 4hrs(6pm-10pm Thur) nights following week to make average 38 hr week worked out that got every Friday off and every other Monday so one week have Fri/Sat/Sun following week Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon best shift pattern worked.During working life done nearly every shift pattern in some form and preferred 3x12 happily now retired so don't have to go through the weekly grind do I miss work ? Umm Nope

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do 4 12s and have 4 days off. Its pretty nice.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd take 3 x 12s for a 36 hour work week in a heartbeat.

2 years ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 4

I let my staff make their schedules providing every shift had adequate coverage and 4 people chose this. Everyone loved it. 6 people worked 5 eight hour shifts, 4 worked 4 ten hour shifts and then the twelve hour shift people did weekends.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I work 3 12's and it is the greatest thing ever. 1 day to chill and recuperate, 3 days to get shit done baby!!!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I do that at the hospital. The four days are awfully nice...

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same, I sleep for like 10 hours the first night off, but I still enjoy the trade off

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

12's are too long a shift for me. Each to their own though!

2 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

May be easier to handle with a 4 day weekend either side? I’ve only ever done 5-6x12 back in my youth so I wouldn’t know

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Did that for a while. It’s a really nice schedule

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s what I do it’s great

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's a plastics recycling/re-manufacturing place that does it that way out here.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do 2x12hr morning shifts, day off, 2x12hr night shifts and 5 days off. Love it

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did that once and loved it.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We do 4 x 12s followed by 4 off, over year works out to 38 hours/week and means you can properly get away and recover from work, even get away if you are willing to push a little.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That sounds amazing, but it looks like that works out to a bit over 42 hours per week?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It gets really complicated when you roll it all out, a few hours from each week goes into the fact we have 4 weeks off every 6 months so need some hours banked to use as that's over standard of 4 weeks per year, we also do 2 weeks of 4x10 training on return from each leave block.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The trick is to put the extra day off in the middle of the week. That way you're never more than two days away from a day off.

2 years ago | Likes 366 Dislikes 14

The trick is early / rest / rest / rest / late / late / mid. Maps well for hospitality with Early is Monday. feels like 2 weeks. chef life!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I took wednesdays off for 4 months instead of taking vacation one year. Fuck that was amazing. 2 2-day work weeks with either 1 or 2 days between them. Loved it. Would totally do it again if I wasn't now the boss. Now I only take a vacation once every 2-4 years

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Got to do this for a year or so…was amazing. Life was nothing but weekends, Mondays, and Fridays. No matter how bad a “Monday” was, tomorrow was always going to be “Friday “

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

There is a benefit to both, 3 day weekends mean longer holidays. You take 3 days off and you have 10 days in between working days. Going for 2 days off work 1 day off and 2 more days means you get to do things while offices are open. No longer needing to take time off to go to the bank for example. I've done both and both are better than 5 days in a row

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My old schedule was 2 on 2 off 3 on 2 off 3 on. 12 hr shifts and never more than 3 days without 2 days off.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now im back to 5 8s but i am in a high supervisory position.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone who likes to do all my work then take a long break- I've always hated this idea of having to trick ourselves into when the next day off is. I've worked 4 on 4 off and now at a new job I'm 7 on 7 off. I'd much rather have the time to actually get away between work periods. I just plan ahead for appointments and groceries and I'm good to go.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can't do it. Two days just isn't enough for a full reset.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I would love that

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s what I do. Two day work weeks babyyyyyy

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Or…all three in a row, so you can do chores and appointments on one, and have two “Saturdays” with which to Füçk off

2 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 2

I did that for seven years. A day off in the middle is better, trust me.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 9

Speaking from experience, the one day isn't long enough to decompress from the previous two and you burn out.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The 2-day weekend is for decompressing. The 1-day break is just for running errands and other necessary crap.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

With 3 days in a row. I'm able to travel a half day or a full day away. Have a full day at the destination, And travel back for a mini vacation. 2 days are significantly more restricting on what your capable of doing for a weekend

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I work a 2-2-3-2 schedule, it rocks! Every other weekend is a 3 day.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Having done both, personally I prefer the 3 days of in a row. The 1 day off in the middle always seemed useless to me

2 years ago | Likes 182 Dislikes 2

because it is. You are either recovering from the several days of work from before or you realize you've just spent your one day off doing catch up home stuff.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends on what you need it for. Extra day on the weekend feels way better than a day in the middle of the week to me. But if your job was high stress, 2 days on max might be much more useful - or the weekday off is good for appointments

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

For people who struggle with high stress levels and similar, that day off in the middle of the week is a port in a storm. But all else being equal you do definitely get more out of a three-day weekend than a mid-week day off.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think a weekday off in the middle would be great since every goddamn doctors/dentist/vet/wizard/school admin don't do weekends for most appointments.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

If you have a three-day weekend, one of the days will be a weekday.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

But if everyone has a three day weekend then Friday just becomes an official part of the weekend and you're back to getting the middle finger when you try and schedule an appointment. If anything, banks need a split shift where the paperwork and accounting people can be there whenever they want, but the money people and lenders are there when everyone else gets off work.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The trick is, not everyone has the same extra day off.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That's what I do. Can't go back.

2 years ago | Likes 522 Dislikes 0

I’ve been self employed for 12 years. I don’t think I’d last a week if I had to go back to having a manager.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Our employees have been doing this for 5 years. They LOVE IT!!!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am currently financially stable - by razor thin margins - by doing absolutely nothing all day. I will find it VERY hard to go look for work again if something upsets that balance.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Next steo, try 4x8! 4day week is incredible. I dont see anyone who seriously gets 12 or 10 or even 8 solid hours of work actually done in a day, so instead rest more, work better/harder but for less time

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Got Friday through Sunday off and I wouldn't trade it for a 5 dollar raise.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I will see your 4x10, and raise you 7x12 *cries in hospital worker* (but good break between)

2 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

No. I'm keeping my 3x12's ... join me!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I had a job that was 3 days for 12 hours. They gave you enough of a differential that you basically getting paid like you were working 40 hours. Ugh it was the best shift. But they took it away because they didn't want a weekend shift anymore. Granted i almost passed out from being gassed by amonia. But barely had to talk to anyone.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I did it for a while but my days off were rarely consecutive. I wouldn’t mind it as long as it’s a long weekend.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Same. Worth. Such a change of life style. Work my booty off 4 days, then 3 days to relax.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I work four days a week at around seven hours for an IT Desk but we also work three weekends in a row every eight weeks. Evening shifts are basically the same as not working if clients don't reach out, which they rarely do.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

is that how they do it in Europe? Something tells me they do it differently

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same. We’ve been doing it where I work for nearly 2 years. It’s the most popular thing management has ever done.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I only got to work that shift once for 6 months. I still dream about having it back from time to time. I had weekends & Thursdays off, it was glorious. You’d think having to go back in Friday would suck, but it really just meant I had 2 Fridays in my week.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All of my staff get to do it but me. Damn management lol I'm really glad they get to though. Makes them so happy

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

yeah it was nice when I could do that. Depending where you live, you loose a lot of time commuting and getting prepared for work so it's a nice change of pace : P

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Agreed ! One less commuting + getting prepared a week makes quite some time spared at the end of the year.

I had this for a while, trick was to split the team up into diff days...some took monday, some took friday, a few of us took wednesdays...note - taking wednesdays off is amazing, every 2 days you have day off to get shit done

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I had it. God it is sooo much better than surrendering every day of your week for 8 hours a day.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I currently work 4 10's. Trying to get it to be 3 12's with an 8hr make up day every other week.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also tell them paid lunch and thatll actually make it 9 hours of work. That's the most clutch move, trust.

We all getting our own supporting cast? That’s great, helping us stay on track in this 4 leaf clover seasons.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

how about 4 8's? Do we really need so many work hours?

2 years ago | Likes 320 Dislikes 7

No, but people are so used to the 40 hour work week that they won't likely eschew it anytime soon.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Liston, I may be there for 10 hours most days, but I ain't getting 8 hours of work done.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah but for most people reducing their hours would not increase the percentage of time they spent working during those hours.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

So? Increasing the hours or keeping them the same doesn't either. The point is people should be able to spend their time as they see fit and still afford to live.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We are currently talking about implementing 4x8 at work and I cannot contain my hope

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

According to studies 5d/6h or 4d/6h seems to be optimal for productivity.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly. Keep the salary the same but do 4x8h days. I actually come in on Sunday and take Monday, weds, Saturday off

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Depends on the job. Plenty of jobs are time dependent (most factory, shop sales, building etc.)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

40 hour weeks took decades of organizing and fighting from the labor movement. shorter weeks aren't going to happen without more of that. join the iww, organize with your coworkers and make demands.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

the truth is none of us should have to work any more than we want to, and the only reason we do is because this arrangement benefits the people who own businesses and who consequently have the most economic power to influence politics with. the only way can counter that is by organizing. the more, the better.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

unfortunately sometimes it depends on your industry, if it's fast paced deadline based... i do 5 10's and still randomly get hid with a bunch of OT -.-

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The industry is key, as well as outside obligations. I keep trying to take an extra day off to focus on school but either bring work home or work over if I don't have an assignment due. I worked 11 hours on Friday because I'm taking vacation days this week and really didn't wanna work from home. I typically do 9-10 hours but I'm only scheduled for 8.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sounds like the company is keeping you understaffed and/or giving you unrealistic deadlines. Some industries you have unlimited work that needs to be done, so forget about the idea of "I just need to finish this" - when your hours are up you should be able to put down your work and go home for the day. In my opinion all workers should try to enforce this at their workplace... Except maybe if you are a doctor in the middle of surgery or something 😅

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Company is def understaffed at times. But it's partially due to using older proprietary niche software in a small industry that's hard to just get people to come in and get started quickly. Also we have clients who have demands, and if we don't meet them they'll go elsewhere. Not excusing the company for their faults, but just giving insight.. its not just "busy work" for the sake of busy work. If that makes sense.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I expect reception would be rather mixed among those who are hourly, because that added free time (which is good) comes with a 20% drop in pay (which is not so good).

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 7

The 4x8 is usually proposed as part of 100:80:100, 100% pay, 80% hours, 100% retained output. So there would be no drop in pay. Otherwise if you wanted 4x8 with reduced pay, thats what permanent part time would get you

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, no drop in pay.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

And if they did raise wages to compensate, many of my coworkers would just volunteer to keep working 5 days because they want the money. That's an extra $150 a week for people making $18 p/h. Bump them to $22, many of my coworkers would just work 5 days for the extra $200 a week rather than take the day off. Since covid, we've all gone up 20-40% in hourly rate and some are volunteering for 6 days.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's exactly where I am. I was in a hard- toxic environment and I worked so many hours! It was nuts... Now I'm in a very different environment, I work an average of 36 hours or so, in 4 days, it has done wonders for my mental health...But my finances have suffered. I feel like a hamster in one of those wheels

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They should keep the same hourly/salary because it’s about changing the definition of a work week from 40 hours to 32 hours.

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

Hourly would have to go up in that scenario. Salary would stay the same.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Except they won't. And we all know it. Sure, it'd be great if every employer was decent about it and increased everybody's pay accordingly so everyone's standard of living stayed the same, but that wouldn't be what would happen. They're not going to put the well being of their employees over their profits.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

We can fight for it. Look to France for inspiration

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

They won't go up in pay unless forced to by government mandate. And then they will drag their feet as long as humanly possible.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why should the pay drop?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Hourly employees would only work 32 hours, instead of 40. Which means they'd only get paid for 32 (instead of 40). Unless the employer increases everyone's hourly pay (which they won't do), that's less money in the paycheck.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Or hourly wages go up so nobody looses their current paycheck value like it's been done in Belgium and Iceland. And the trend is continuing. If the companies won't fall in line then we should look to France for some pointers

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Uh huh. Federal minimum wage hasn't changed in 14 years. You think people working FEWER hours is gonna get places to actually start raising people's pay? Standardizing a 32 hour work week is unlikely as is. You're deluding yourself if you think that a lot of people WON'T get shafted in the process if it did somehow happen.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is what my salary employees do. We changed it to a 32 hour work week because no one needs 40 anymore. It’s time to change.

2 years ago | Likes 122 Dislikes 1

Are you hiring?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They’re all part time.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

In full time hourly so that's not true.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

The hourly employees that work for them are part time. They’re not saying all hourly employees everywhere are part time.
