Do you know how big avocado trees get?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Needs more toast

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I chucked some avacado pits into my compost pile...I now have an avacado tree growing inside my house after seeing random growth outside.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Somebody needs a grafting!:)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Avocado growing is great. I have two plants of 1 and 2 years old now. About 50% of the pits die amongst me, and most people I've talked to.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Did you graft them?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#2 Do you happen to know the name of the species on the right? I used to have a huge (~25 yr old) one of these, and am looking to replace it

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Schefflera arboricola.. dwarf umbrella tree!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nice! You can sell these, I saw what seemed like a drug deal at a brewery but it was a girl selling a starter avocado tree.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A brewery is the EXACT location I would expect a drug deal type plant sale to go down ??

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What are those succulent leaves in the pot for?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought the pit was dead so I just started propping my succ leaves on the soil ?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aha okay:)

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The electrical outlet saying, " don't do it, don't jump"

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

? if any of my plants jump off the sink ledge when I’m watering I WILL have a heart attack!!!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do I need to wait 5 months or can I just watch it now? Hehehe

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

@OP if you turn Live Photo off, you'll save on storage space and battery life.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unless the Libe photo is intentional, in which case how dare you deprive us of the videos.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I usually keep it on because I take A LOT of photos of my cat ??‍⬛

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Avocados grown from seed like this rarely fruit. And if they do, it can take 20+ years for the first fruit. Good luck OP.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My avocado is called “Mexie”. I’m going to transfer her from water to soil this weekend. 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow!!!! Great work! Funny how it’s growing out of the side like that ?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Didn’t realize that was weird until just now! Nice addition to my weird plant family :) :)

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it October already?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've had the best luck just throwing an old, rotting avocado in, skin and all. If you put it outside, make sure you bury it deep enough to

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My tree in northeast Thailand gave fruit after five years, bought grafted plant at the local market.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Now wait another couple of years till you get your first avocado

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If it start saying feed me throw it out.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've never seen an electrical outlet so damn close to a water source.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think my house was built in the 50s….

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the most recent pic is from today, 5/20 ?

Have water below the pot that the roots can grow into and have a constant supply and it will grow like crazy

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you have any questions im a horticulturalist pm me!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think its ready for a larger pot

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was just thinking that when I watered it today!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not that I wanna disappoint you but... https://youtu.be/yWAR_DotvZs

4 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

crab avocado tree

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

is it because the fruit is a mendelian hybrid?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes :)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

:D

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That was my exact thought!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That was informative and interesting, thanks for sharing

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I just watched it today and it blew my mind. If your gonna use what you grow as the base for a graft, then you should be ok.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I honestly don’t know what my goal is, but it’s fun to see it grow ?

4 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Graft it! Or play the lotto and love your likely gross avocado tree anyway.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

All avocado boyos are good boyos

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

When you learn that avocados dont grow true to seed, I hope you manage delicious avocados though

4 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

It’s all about the journey! I’m having fun watching it grow from pit. I don’t care if I never get fruit ?

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Yea it is fun and nice to watch, I just find it interesting that its a bit of a gamble to find out what kind of fruit you manage to grow

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Grows a pumpkin

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But rely, have you thought of maybe grafting branches from tasty avocado varieties? I know it's risky, but i would want fruit I can eat...

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Damnit. I'm on attempt seed number 4. They just won't germinate for me

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Just put it in the ground. I've grown a few and they keep coming in the compost.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm in Canada. Not sure it's warm enough

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A pot in the house is fine too. That's how I grew mine which is ~16years old now.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cool!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Now sit back and wait twenty years for that first fruit.

4 years ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 0

To get edible fruit you need to graft on a fruit bearing stem.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't they need to be pollinated (Which is why growers employ bee cultures making the fruit not vegan?)

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Which unfortunately is unlikely to actually taste good, because avocados do not grow true to seed.

4 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

I read somewhere that if you grow one like this, it never bears fruit. Don't know how this is possible.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Avocado trees require grafting to bare fruit that is edible. Same thing goes for apples.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A wise man plants a tree knowing he wont live long enough to rest in its shade. (Paraphrase).

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Jesus how much is it for an avocado?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s been 15 yrs, still waiting...????

4 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

??

4 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Dang. :(

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unless it’s grafted even if it does bear fruit it will most likely not be edible. Avocados are like apples. Grafted trees are supposed to

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Produce fruit within 3-4 years, if not then it may be too cold where you live.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And by not edible I mean not taste good, it will most likely be safe to eat it’ll just taste like crap.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Live in Qld, Oz, tree is fine, not grafted, just bloody waiting, had flowers last summer, so here’s hoping??????‍♀️

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good luck man, I think it’s like 1 in 10,000 ungrafted trees produce good fruit

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How often did you change the water? Is it regular tap water? I tried this a few times but the seed just rotted. Tips?

4 years ago | Likes 99 Dislikes 0

Mine only likes distilled water the tap water has too much salt content

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Strip the brown outer layer away, the acid inside of it hinders the growth

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

For me, placing them on top of moist soil worked best. Needs around two months to root. Got four plants from four seeds this way.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The toothpick water technique on the other hand had only a 30% success rate.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I changed the water every day - tip it out and refill with fresh tap water

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I did the pick/jar method for a few. I’ve got a few in a plastic bag in my cabinet now. There are a few ways to start them. (Contd)

4 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

The first pic has worked best for me. I’ve got 2 now that are successful from toothpicks/jar/water. One from a south window, one in an east!

4 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Start a bunch. In my experience only about 25 percent successfully root and become a tree.

4 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 0

Don't you have to wait years for them to mature and find out if they're going to bear fruit too?

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yes. Mature trees are at least 10 years old before they will fruit.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Someone told me that the ones from the supermarket are less successful, maybe sterile? Better to get then from a market type place

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Agreed. the ones from my parents’ tree did great. made it 3+ years but I think it succumbed to the cold (even inside. Montana is rough)

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yes! Just regular old city tap water! And honestly whenever I noticed the water get gross… once every 10ish days?

4 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

How long did it take fof the first root to sprout

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

First tiny root in a month! I could tell things were happening bc the pit split open. Secondary roots at 3 months

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hope you are not in Flint.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Damn.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think you're supposed to cut the top third off after the first year. It hurts but helps it branch out 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

They did that with my yuzu trees before i got them.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I did that and my tree just grew a new branch next to the cut and continued to grow straight up but now with a little kink ?

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

A little kink is just nice though ;)

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am just now realizing what I wrote ?

4 years ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

Straight with a little kink, aye that's me!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Any tips on fertilizer? Mines about 2 years old now and looks similar to these photos.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I use a little compost from our bin but you might want to ask a neighbor for a cup to top it off if you don't have your own

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mines a few years old and it's three feet tall and about four feet wide. The leaves on mine

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Get brown tips in the early spring. It's in a big pot now. I'm not quite sure what to do with it next

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Take cuttings and breed an avocado army! It's the logical next step!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Profit.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on your objective.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I did that to mine and then it died :(

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah it never worked for me

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Funny to think it would obviously kill it, funnier still when someone confirms it does exactly what you thought it would do. My Condolences.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, I hope it gets a chance to produce fruit (a good tasting one). Sadly, avocados aren’t true to seed. Nice job though! Yay plants!!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes, not true to seed. The odds that a tasty avocado plant will be grown from a seed is about one in 10,000

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Then how do avocado trees not become extinct?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They reproduce with seeds like many other plants. OP’s plant will grow and produce an avocado but it won’t taste like the parent’s fruit.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just like how you aren’t an exact copy of your mom or dad, the fruit of an avocado isn’t an exact copy of it’s parent.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thus resulting in a different tasting fruit. It’s likely the fruit won’t taste great but it’ll produce fruit nonetheless.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What does one do then? graft?

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Correct. To replicate the avocados we see in grocery stores, these plants must be grafted. Otherwise there would be no consistency.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

but consistency aside, do they need to be grafted to produce at all?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They still produce when grown from a seed, it just tastes awful. Like if you pick 2 random ingredients in your kitchen
