As someone who has used GIMP intermittently since the 90s, there is also Krita (easier to use, imo).

I've been a gimp user for a while, and am often frustrated by how not so straightforward it is, so I'll be trying that out. Thanks for the info!

I'm not a fan of GIMP in general but there are some plugins out there that can improve the UX / UI. Have you tried out PhotoGIMP (https://github.com/Diolinux/PhotoGIMP) or anything like that? Not a shill but if you're already using it this is another option to Krita (though Krita isn't bad either).
