as a latino I'm proud that we've got badasses like Cassian Andor and Poe Dameron representing us in rebel alliance

It was nice for me to see half-Asian characters in Big Hero 6~ :)

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

As far as I'm concerned, we're always going to be in Mexico's debt for Salma Hayak.

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 2

I did the same for my Canadian dad with Deadpool.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I need to see a villain with the Muppets Swedish Chef accent, please.

old my son to see it today, thought this character was French. My bad.

The movie did great in paying respects to the old film. The diverse cast in this film helped overseas but it to me made the film a more <1>

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

<2> diverse galaxy.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and then everyone clapped.

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 5

And his dad asked for three fiddy, (or 74.70 pesos)

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of that feeling when Temuera Morrison's Maori accent kicked in for Jango Fett (and the clones!). I'm not Maori, but as a 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It's sort of nice, but then again it kind of effed up the continuity with Boba. (also I'm not sure his performance was very good anyway.)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

New Zealander I was so proud. And then the wee boy had it too! So awesome.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Representation matters up until we gut movies/plots/characters just for the sake of diversity. Diego Luna was phenomenal, but other 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

times when we completely rewrite things to feature those kinds of things, the people usually manage to jack it up. Ghost busters anyone?

Mu Italian grandparents did their best to learn, then clean up, their English for the country they chose to reside in. Not sure about this.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's nice to have talented actors in good movies. Actors shoehorned in for the sake of virtue signaling is bollocks (see 'Ghostbusters')

9 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 31

And the one character working a blue collar job with little academic education... was the black woman.

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 7

The sound of crashing irony is yet to subside

I didnt know Diego Luna was famous-er now. I only know him from a guilty pleasure movie I used to watch "Y Tu Mama Tambien" in which you

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

get to see him get sexyyyy mmmmMMM

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's really cool. Diego Luna's great, he played one of the only characters in the film that had enough depth for me to relate to him.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

I thought Jyn grew throughout the movie too. What was K2's last line to her? 'Your actions continue to be unpredictable.'

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Nah I found her really shallow; only thing that made her interesting was her father. Now he had depth.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think the characters were intentionally shallow because of later events in the film

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah but most were just deep enough to get feels by the end.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This guy has clearly never seen Nacho Libre

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Huh. I didn't even notice it.

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 4

it's because everyone in the Rogue One squad has some atypical accent or skin color. It's supposed to show diversity

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Isn't that a good thing? If it didn't affect how you enjoyed the movie, then the actor did a fine job despite not being a "typical lead."

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I'm suddenly wondering how people in Star Wars can have Mexican or British accents in a galaxy that doesn't have a Mexico or Britain.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Because the actors are humans from the planet earth

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I have the same confusion as to where the people with American accents came from, but I couldn't fit "or America" in the character limit.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

LOL, my Mexican dad was somehow oblivious to the fact that Cassian was Mexican until I pointed it out to him.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We need windows to see outside our own experiences but also mirrors to see ourselves reflected (in movies, books, etc.) like your dad saw.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

And the mirror for his dad is a window for those of us who aren't Latino.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, good point!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's a lovely way of putting it.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Now be in the shoes of other ethnicities that wish to be portrayed correctly or at all. Hollywood is so scared of black ppl protesting 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 12

2/2 that it forgets about so many talented ethnic actors/actresses. I wish I had more characters to really say how I feel.

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 9

There is more hispanic people than black people! By how much black people are represented in culture, I'd say they're 50%.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I agree, but demographics are really prohibitive. 73% white, 13% black, 5% asian, 1% native. Statistically, most actors will be white.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

That's assuming all the actors come from America which isn't really true

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Yeah, a lot of them come from England too, which is far more white than the US. :P

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

England uses more diverse casts without stereotyping than the US does.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

That's further exacerbated by the fact that a much larger percentage of white people end up acting as a career.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

This is what doesn't get talked about enough when the other conversations come up....

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, and I didn't even care to bring up that most screenwriters will also be white, and people write from their own experiences.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is if you only cultivate from Hollywood. Diego Luna for example was an international actor. If you want to be close minded sure.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Well yeah, you are the one who called out Hollywood, so that's what I'm "cultivating" from. Of course international actors act in Hollywood

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hollywood is able to cultivate from other countries and you know that. So don't act like you don't know what I am saying.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

movies, that's absolutely a given. But for every Diego Luna, there are 50, 100 people from the US. Even if foreign actors made up 5% of

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You may be quoting a bunch of stats but you know damn well there is a diverse set of actors and it can be done if they chose to.

"Representation matters". Right up until it becomes enforced. Then it's not representation anymore, but quota filling. Which is bad.

9 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 21

I had exactly this conversation with a few people at work today.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think the way things currently are, appropriate representation cannot occur without it being forced to some degree. The characters in...

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 13

...Rogue One were undoubtedly cast to be diverse, entirely consciously. Films like this need to set a precedent, and then eventually it...

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 11

...will no longer feel forced. Diversity in Hollywood can't happen naturally because Hollywood is by its very nature racist.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 13

I don't think it's inherently bad. I think some people won't get the point of why/how representation matters, so the plopping a minority 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

2/ character in w/o giving them depth/personality beyond that characteristic can lead to awkward storytelling, but that in itself provides

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

3/ us with "bad examples" and therefore concrete examples to which we can refer in our ongoing dialogue as we progress. That has value.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

4/4 I don't think we should assess things so B&W, as if they can only succeed/fail as a work of art. Everything is a great convo piece.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Now if only Asians got serious roles outside of stereotypical ones

9 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 9

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I still don't get why they couldn't get an Asian dude for Edge of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise was way too old for the roll anyhow.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Fast Five

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sure but I'd argue Asians are one of the demographics that has the least amount of exposure in Hollywood mostly limited to stereotypes.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But in Rogue One, they had the Hong Kong dude. I thought that was purty cool.

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

Liked him, but still stereotypical. Asian men aren't all monkish martial artists. I liked Wen's character more as he's a "normal" dude."

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 3

Jiang Wen's inclusion as Baze was great. He wasn't: camp gay, a nerd, a martial artist, penis punchline, social bumbler, etc. Great role.

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Jiang Wen was ok. Donnie Yen was a stereotypical role because he was fucking Donnie Yen and seeing him lay out stormtroopers is hype as fuck

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Yeah, Donnie Yen's roll kinda pissed me off cause of how stereotypical he seemed.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

honestly if the movie didn't have Donnie Yen being Donnie Yen in the Star Wars universe, I'd have been disappointed tbh

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

If the movie ended up like Force Awakens, I'd demand my money back.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I mean, did you see Rogue One? The asian dude in it was fucking awesome.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

If you're unfamiliar with Donnie Yen ("the asian dude" you're referring to), please go watch Ip Man 1-3. He IS awesome!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"The asian dude" There were two of them.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I mean can you call an old married couple 2 people?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

He was awesome but still stereotypical. Not all Asians are monks and martial artists

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

I think that has more to do with Donnie Yen being Donnie Yen rather than him being Asian. Have you seen a movie where he WASN'T typecast?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

One was stereotypical, the other one looked like Machete and used firearms. Bit of a mold-breaker IMO.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I totally agree with you but the directed approached them b/c he wanted an international cast and they both are massive stars 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Also because China wouldn't allow the film to be released in there if they didn't have Chinese actors in the roles.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I hadnt seen that. I know studios will add a Chinese actor to keep the country happy but I had not heard of it being a demand for release.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They're making more demands now that they have more buying power in the middle class. https://youtu.be/8R-FQTY4KJk

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yen has spoken about how he created the character with the director. He used his martial skills and faith in development of the role 2/?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

He said casting him and NOT using his skills would have been inconceivable. I totally agree that Hollywood makes racial stereotypes 3/4

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

and it needs to be addressed, but in this case I think they showed Yen (and Jiang) playing roles they enjoy. 4/4 :)

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Oh werd my criticism isn't for this movie in particular I thought they did a good job of diversity but more so in a broad sense of Hollywood

MRW the only white males in Rogue One were the bad guys and I'm a white guy

9 years ago | Likes 911 Dislikes 52

More problematic was that nearly 100% of the bad guys were white males. In a galaxy with hundreds of species. And multiple genders. Uh huh.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Well the bad guys were Brits.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In England we take it as a compliment that we're always the bad guys. But then, we're famous for disregarding the opinions of lesser folks.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And one of them has been dead for 22 years. I never even knew he was full on CGI the entire movie...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yall need some Catalyst in your life. The prequel book establishes his goodiness

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

He was arguably the hero of the film

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

You could also argue that he was a villain.

They were, though, because the movie woukd have been more diverse without them. They're totally problematic.

How about just get the best actors for the part instead of pushing political narratives?

9 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 52

Do you even Hollywood?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

It's not a political narrative, it's pure capitalism in a good way. More representation means capturing potentially different markets.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 4

I agree. I didn't say they couldn't do what they want with casting. It was just a point to respond to the original comment.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TIL getting a minority = pushing a political narrative while getting a white guy = best actor.

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 10

Literally not what I said. Maybe the Mexican guy was the best. The comment I made is why not just get the best, not that who they had werent

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

There are more white actors than nonwhite. Statistically speaking only 12% of roles should go to blacks if it's a meritocracy.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

Most actors are Asian (that includes the Indian subcontinent). Unless you only count Hollywood films.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The world isn't a meritocracy and never has been, and hollywood doesn't accurately depict racial makeups of the world

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

He was responding to the guy who said make all main characters a minority. Don't misrepresent what he said.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 8

The limited information provided means that their words are open to interpretation. You might not have the correct understanding.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Who said that?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How do you know the best actor didn't get the part?

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

duh, because he wasn't white, he was a minority picked to push a political narrative! but don't call ivefallen racist.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 5

He might have, it just hurts the argument when Disney comes out and says they are actively pushing a diverse casting.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To defend the point...The producers/creators of the film open said that they were pushing a political narrative.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

*openly

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

*everything* does. The only reason people bitch about "pushing a political narrative" is because it's one they disagree with.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

But wasn't the actor that was spoken about in this post white?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

Yeah, but for some reason a lot of Americans don't consider hispanics white (I have no clue why)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Many people in America consider Hispanics to be a separate race but it's not. You can be any race and be Hispanic.

Is that not considered white in America?

I think the FBI call it white, but otherwise it's designated as a separate race. If you hate latinos (and you're white) you're racist (1/2)

But if you're white and hate a different kind of white (e.g-Irish hating on italians) you're not racist. So I think Luna would be non-white.

technically you answer "white" in the forms, and then there's a seperate box for "hispanic latino" that usually follows it

There's a story behind that. I can't remember what it is, but there's a story.

We're not white in the same way some consider jewish people not white despite their fair skin and light hair and eyes

Not knocking your point, but the only ppl who don't think European jews are white are usually the anti-semites
