In their defense, I'd probably have a crisis and need to sand off a few layers of skin if I crushed a fly with my bare hand.

But they have short memories so if you move slow enough they will think you've always been there and are protecting them, until the last second when you smack em

See also: all non-human mammals get a billion heartbeats regardless of life expectancy. A shrew lives less than a year but has a rapid heart rate and metabolism, and lightning reflexes to match. It stands to reason that time moves slower for them. Their subjective amount of life experience may be the same as that of a sluggish bowhead whale who can live to 200.

I use an electric swatter, even a grazing hit is sufficient.

Plus: the volume of air being pushed by the hand also helps to create a gettaway airstream. That's why swats are made of a grid.

Also, lighter weight for faster swing. My favorite one is long tapered shaft and whippy for maximum speed

Tip: This swatter works way better then the regular one. Can't quite figure out why, but I have a way better success rate with it: https://www.dnl.nl/spuitgiet-producten/vliegenmepper-altijd-raak/vliegenmepper-1

The design can also be used for other purposes, though for sanitary reasons I suggest not using the same one as for fly swatting. NSFW tag just in case.

See @spitfires2000 comment above. This swatter probably makes for a lighter push, making harder for the fly to fly away.
