I've been putting off posting this because it was so painful to go through the pictures, but I really do want just... something out there. I want people to know how amazing he was. This is a small memorial to my best friend, and a project I'm taking on in his honor at the end.

"That's enough doomscrolling. It's time to pet me."

Gandalf passed away in January. He had kidney disease and diabetes. I kept him going for as long as I was able, but he eventually let me know he'd had enough. He was 17.

He was the stupidest, sweetest guy I've ever known. There will never be another one like him.

Even at his grumpiest, he was sweet. He let me give him his medicine twice every day without a single complaint. He just let me do whatever. He was such a good boy!

No matter how much we tried, he never quite got used to car trips, but he put up with that too. He was a trooper.

His favorite thing was holding my hand and sleeping on me. He would bother me at my computer until I gave him my hand to lay on. I miss that so, so much.

And I do mean that sleeping on me was his *favorite* thing.

He was very, very food motivated. Towards the end that was part of why I knew it was getting close to time. His appetite disappeared and then he stopped eating completely. He didn't even go for churus anymore. I gave him lots and lots of treats and love while I still could, and I'm glad I did.

He loved his spot at the window. He would follow us downstairs every day and yell for us to open the curtain so he could watch the world go by. He'd curl up on that chair all day sometimes.

Saying goodbye was the hardest thing I've ever done. I thought I was getting over it, but making this post really brought everything back. But I want to focus on the positive.

I decided, after he passed, I wanted to do something with animals. So I'm getting involved with a dog and cat rescue in Denver, CO. The pictures I have of Gandalf are my treasures, and I want to get better at taking candid pet photographs, both for my personal use and to try to get better social media attention for animals in need of fosters and adoption.

If you have any recommendations for cameras that won't break the bank, I'd love to hear them.

If you live in the Denver area and want to foster or adopt, please message me. The org I'm working with covers all costs including food and vet care for fosters, which I'm really impressed by. Not all rescues go that far.

Thanks for reading. I'm glad that someone else knows that Gandalf existed and I hope the pictures brought you even a fraction of the joy they bring me. Give your furry friend some love for us.

What an absolutely handsome buddy. I'm so sorry.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Just remember, you gave him a wonderful, loving life, and he loved you right back because you were his entire life, and you were there for him all the way to the end. You did well, human.

Damn you made me tear up. Gandalf is a beautiful floof. 17 is pretty good mileage though, even though the end times suck. I know. I know a lot. Too many of mine have gone way before then.

They say it gets easier. Buddy, it doesn’t. It just sucks less and less each day. September 2025 for me after 18 years together. It’s not easier. It just sucks a little less.

Sweetest cat-buddy! The photo with his pink tongue out is sooo cute. It’s wonderful your tribute to him is saving other cats . He would be proud that your loving relationship blossomed into helping other felines . Proper respect!!! 💕

I lost my handsome old man Kravitz at seventeen. Kidney failure. He also made it clear when he was ready. I can guess how you're feeling now. You did the right thing by Gandalf all along, and I hope that, along with the pawprints he left all over your heart, helps even a little.

Yes, indeed, certainly the handsomest. Grey cats are the best.

RIP to your Gandalf, OP. That's a handsome cat, and I'm glad that he was so cuddly, I always love that myself too. Great choice of name for your little gentleman, have an 8-bit Galdalf GIF, I hope that you feel better soon (don't forget to back up your photos of him multiple times, both online and offline as backups).

He had a good long life. It is always too short. He was a handsome cat.

Our recently departed still had fight in him, but there was no hope as cancer had spread so far and tumors were large, he barely managed to take in any food. We had to let him go. Luckily we got a vet to make a home visit and let him sleep away in the best place he knew, in the lap of my daughter.

He seems like an absolute sweetheart. You were loved by him, he was loved by you and the world is a better place because of that.

He was a lovely old man. In October 2025. My sister’s oldest cat Mittens who was 20. Passed away. He was grumpy too but friendly. His favorite person was my sister. I miss him but I remember that all the pets you have will come back to you once it is your time and be happy to see you once again.

I’m sorry. I lost my girl at 17 too and I’m still not over it nearly two years later. I’m trying to help the ferals in my neighborhood get fixed currently so that fills some of the void left by her absence but not much. I miss her like crazy everyday

I'm really sorry for your loss. For the camera: It'd help to know your budget. Absolute entry level would be Nikon D5600, D7200 for step-up. Buy used/refurb. For lenses, AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G would be what you're looking for (portrait photography and some general use) https://phillipre">eve.net/blog/review-nikon-a-8g">eve.net/blog/review-nikon">f-s-85mm">-8g">eve.net/blog/review-nikon-af-s-85mm-1-8g Examples with Nikon D5600: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1CUnyhtcmV/ https://www.facebook.com/share/p/189Xv72SPd/ https://www.facebook.com/share/p/17k1hj6BUg/

If you decide to go for the D5600, here's a book to help you learn how to use it https://drive.google.com/file/d/11cPg0MDCAL_FQ7_cSMnGA4QwTSeVlOZu/view?usp=sharing
