Kimi no Na wa (Your Name)

Kimi no Na wa is a Japanese animated movie that released a couple weeks ago. It is directed by Makoto Shinkai, who's known for his brilliant Byousoku 5 Centimeter (5 Centimeters per Second). Living up to his name, Kimi no Na wa is lighthearted and fun, but at the same time, it will tear out your heart with a rusted razor. This movie will summon onion cutting ninjas. You've been warned.

Art

Kimi no Na wa is beautiful. Literally every frame of the movie could be used as a wallpaper. Just look at the gifs. A round of applause for Mateusz Urbanowicz (background art) and Masayoshi Tanaka (character design).

Premise

The story begins as a comet is about to fall in Japan for the first time in a thousand years. Mitsuha is a high school girl living in the countryside. She's tired of the idyllic country life and wants to live in Tokyo. Then, there's Taki, who is a high school student living in Tokyo with his friends while working as a part-timer at an Italian restaurant. He also has a strong interest in fine arts involving architecture. One day, Mitsuha dreams of herself as a young man. Taki also has a dream where he is a female student attending high school in the countryside. What could be the meaning behind these dreams?

Music

The songs in Kimi no Na wa are performed by Radwimps and composed by Yojiro Noda, Akira Kuwahara, and Yusuke Takeda and they all did a fantastic job. On its own, the music can already give me goosebumps and chills so when played with the movie, smiles and tears are essentially guaranteed.

Here's the OST if you wanna listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2kGaP7N2VA

Where can I watch this masterpiece?

Sadly, if you're not in Japan, there's no way to legally watch the movie. The keyword here is legally. Google is your friend. But you have to promise to buy the Blu-ray or DVD when it's licensed and released. When you watch it, you'll understand why they totally deserve your money.

Final Thoughts

If you couldn't tell by now, I fucking loved this movie. Kimi no Na wa was a rollercoaster of emotions and it left me with puffy red eyes and a tear stain face, but also huge, dumb smile. I went into the movie expecting nothing and it just blew me away. But hey, don't take my word for it. Go watch it yourself.

tl;dr
Story: 8/10
Art: 10/10
Music 9/10
Overall Score: 10/10

Watch it. You won't regret it.

Edit 1: Funimation has licensed Kimi no Na wa for theater and home release! Prepare your wallets!
Thank you, @ionicseraph for the news link: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2016-07-03/funimation-licenses-makoto-shinkai-your-name-film-for-theaters-home-video/.103928

Edit 2: It has just occurred to me that several scenes in this movie would be perfect for the John Cena meme.

Best kinda of things to watch when you are high

Go to Gogoanime if you want to watch it. Watched it like twice there

Was able to watch it legally with English subs. Hooray for being a featured film on ANA flights for November.

If you really can't wait for an official release, you can find an English subbed low/medium-quality torrent download at www.nyaa.se

This is pretty good... But it's no Catdog

Went to see this in theaters and was surprised how lackluster the story was, however, it's a great work of art.

I'm not a fan of anime but it makes me happy that these animators put so much time and effort into their art. Looks amazing.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

upvoting because this has more thought put into it than an anime list or movie list or any crappy list.

Just watched it thanks to this post and it is very good. Just the kind of story that I like. Plenty of feels. The story was a 9/10 for me.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

where did you see it, I found it on putlocker, had a meeting, came home and already taken down

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wouldn't your overall score be nine?8+10+9=27/3=9

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I saw it the other day illegally. I'd recommend it

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now I wanna watch it, but I can't. This is frustrating.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok i have to admit...the experience was breath taking...I'm still in shock...One of the best if not the best movie i ve seen this year.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

THANK YOU! I wondered about that Story8/10.. While watching it felt like it so long but at the end with everything coming together.. 10/10.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wasn't too keen on 5cm/s, but I did love Children Who Chase Lost Voices, Garden of Words, and a The Place Promised in Our Early Days

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

5cm is not for the faint of hearts. It is a very, I mean very sad animated film but beautifully made at the sametime

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the visuals in it are absolutely amazing

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck it I'll watch

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Watched it... Loved it!

does he know he's an ad?

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

I'm getting sick of these "Why you should watch fill-in-the-blank-anime" posts. No, I shouldn't, because I don't like anime. Fuck off.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Shhhhh don't tell him.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

After watching this movie... just wow... I would pay a high price to re watch it in HD and I will 100% buy the blueray.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

also thanks for including the full OST was looking for it since I finished it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Hmmmmmmmm no.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Dude, all you had to do was post a black picture with "Shinkai has another movie out" and you'd be on the FP. Thanks for the FYI!

Funimation licensed this back in July for theatre and home release. I'd link sauce, but links were too long.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In the future, Google offers a link shortening service. To find it, just Google "link shortener"

If you pm the link, I'll throw them into the description.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It is super beautiful but They legit fast forward the best part and leave you with the boring crap. Also there’s a GameCube. That was nice.

Makoto Shinkai is an incredible director and any attempt to get more people to watch his stuff is +1. He's better than Ghibli by a longshot.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Makoto's art is wat makes his anime so good and while his romance skills are cliche but he made Kimi No Na Wa an interesting romance

What about Bebop?

9 years ago | Likes 153 Dislikes 11

Bebop is a very nice jazz style, but i have no clue what it has to do with this.

im just making a silly comment to his silly comment.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I actually haven't watched it yet because I thought it was 50 episodes long. Turns out it's only 26 episodes, so it's next on my list.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I could watch this gif all day

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Dat loop.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was about to make a serious response until I saw your name. xD

9 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 0

What about Gurren Lagann?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Are there Gundams in this movie?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes. Comet is actually on collision course with Earth. The kids are trained to be Gundam pilots so they can blow up the comet before it hits

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Now you have me interested. Is there a hot springs scene?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Totally. The ice on the comet gets heated as it enters the atmosphere, effectively turning it into a hot spring.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

there's currently no legal way. It's done so well in Japan's theaters Funimation, CrunchyRoll, or maybe even Netflix will pick it up soon.

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 3

Netflix has garden of words, which is similar in its beauty and lovely onion cutting story. It should pick this one up soon hopefully.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd hope so too. It's literally ranked as the best anime of all time on myanimelist.net. There's no reason not to.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Initial hype. It will settle down once the Blu-ray is out and more people can watch it.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Screw legal, I can't afford that. I'll watch it on kissanime

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

But it's not there yet:(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Support the creators. They deserve it. I'm planning on buying it once it's officially licensed and subbed.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I would if I could, but I don't believe someone should be exempt from an amazing story just because they can't pay for it

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Friends can buy it and you can watch it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

pffthaha ^this guy assumes we have friends

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you're going to watch something with high quality animations/art, use a torrent... Not a shitty stream. At least do that for me.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Kissanime uses the same files you get from torrent sites,

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Doesn't include video/audio filters, and is most likely compressed quite a bit.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I only saw a 480p stream last I checked anyway. I should check again. Deserves nothing less than bluray quality

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's 720 right now, probably be a better one up soon

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What do you mean crappy streams? 1080p not gud enuf?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's more to it than the resolution streaming website claims to have. http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/11144

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Including video/audio filters, being able to choose your own sub group, audio quality in generla, blu-ray, etc.
