I was 42 when I got into my "Dream Job" as a game designer. Previously I've been working as a programmer in the financial sector for about 15 years or so. Not all bad years, but none were good.
That sucks. It may seem bleak now but there will be other comparable opportunities. I just got accepted to my dream job after 2 years of trying. Another position I got after three years. Play that long game, and don't give up unless the goal no longer suits you
guess players rich n politicians teachers god or brain never wanted good planet for most , or churches cause they never picked up the slack of the rest failing in the public schools or private to train people to be good leaders caring for most and the planet , if leaders are taken over by aliens guess your movies n songs taught them crap on their way here picking up the radio waves going through space crap moral crap humanity crap to home and to most crap warmonger n violence greed think n do
Can you do your job solo or freelance? I interviewed at 72 places when finally 2 guys told me that with my extensive experience i should open my own company. I did & while it took 12 years of poverty to build up the independence & ability to make a healthy office environment was well worth it.
Got knocked back twice from a job that I would have loved and added so much value to my life. It's still hard to think about. But you have to reprioritize and move on. You have no choice, even when you don't want to anymore.
Some companies use algorithms to automatically reject certain application answers, so maybe it wasn't that you turned in a bad app, maybe it was a bad algorithm
you got this. you're more than what job you get or don't get - you're a whole, valuable person and in the scope of this amazing weird life, what you did to get money is low on the list of what really matters. it *does* matter to feel contentment, fulfillment and gratitude though, that's totally true. Can you seek what else in your life could provide what you were hoping the job would give you? If it involved helping others, could you volunteer a little? if it was an intellectual position, could
you do a personal project that would get your neurons firing? ditto for creativity or whatever it was that made it your "dream job". maybe you can still bring those things into your life. it may even help set you up better for a similar job down the line if you still want to pursue the field. Sending good vibes your way <3
What profession are you trying to get into, if I may ask? I know some of the niché ones can be difficult to get into the 'conventional' way. I heard someone who had studied to become a paleontologist but couldn't get any teaching job anywhere. He eventually managed to land many consultant jobs and advisory positions by helping to make pre-historic art books and even Youtube content and getting noticed that way.
Cry it out, do some comfort stuff, then keep applying and trying. From someone currently unemployed and having been rejected for a few amazing job opportunities recently, you gotta keep up the effort. It'll pay off
I got a job offer from my dream job and it was too low to accept because I'm not privileged enough to be able to afford a job I enjoy and makes me feel life is worth living. So I'm forced to keep my shit job that I despise and I really hope I die soon. Life fucking sucks. It really does.
So sorry to hear that. I have had the same over the years. I still am a long way off from retiring/dying so no hope there. Just another 30+ years of shit jobs I have to have in order to feed my family.
I feel the same way, particularly since my prospects are only getting worse as time goes by. You'd think that 55 years experience in a technical field would make me an attractive employee, but what it makes me is simply old. I have been running into ageism for over five years (I'm 73) and I'm not getting any younger but I still want a decent job bc medical stuff ate my retirement fund, I have the will & skill to rebuild it, but can't get hired.
Only put max 15-20 years of experience on your CV. People don’t need to know past that. You are never required to disclose your age, so don’t. Take a few new relevant software courses from EdEx or similar organisation to ‘freshen up’ your expertise on your CV.
That is very good advice. I am turning 40 this year but I also noticed that I include only skills needed for the job. I do not want to look overqualified or some other bs.
I'm fairly decent writing Rust. (I'm totally pro with C++.) There aren't a lot of Rust programmers; I thought that becoming facile in that language would make me a more attractive employee. However, that does not appear to be the case. I used to include the fact that I have written computer programs in over 50 languages. That fact seem to scare more than impress.
Mood. I was given a grant if 200k to make my dream job making a public access gaming studio (like a library), in partnership with my city. Spent 3+ years getting companies and the city onboard. And then COVID hit. Been just clinging to sanity since as I work as a minimum paid technician in a basement of a building I have to drive 60km each way to get to.
*sigh* I don't think the interest is there anymore. I'll try some feelers but most people now have home units they're happy with using due to covid and have their own setups. And personally I don't think I can, I just feel so old and outdated and I guess the wind was knocked out of my sails. Not really good with bouncing back. Wow I have a lot of excuses eh?
You should definitely cry and carry on. But when you’re finished, dust yourself off, pat some cute animals then find out what it is that you’re missing to get this job. Also take time to reassess if this is the right path for you. It’s completely okay to change track.
I was about to say, “wow, that’s really solid advice…” and then you outer yourself as a career counselor. Well done. And good on you for offering free help to this person!
@op took me 3 attempts and 6 yrs at getting the job I always wanted and now I’m traveling all the time, got a great team that reports to me and got a seat at the table. Failing is just a part of succeeding. Don’t give up!
Soooo.... I just hit undo on an email that I drafted to inquire about a position that I am told (from a current employee) is supposed to be open. I am not OP, but any chance you could give me some advice? Doesn't necessarily have to be free, I am actually really interested to get a perspective from someone like you on my situation in general!

Your job does not define you!

You can cry and give up, but please limit it to one day. One day of emotional evacuation. Then Jump in the saddle, hold on to the bridle.

I've been rejected for jobs I didn't even really want. So if you're even going for your dream job, sounds like you're on your way.

Tokamak fusion reactor design and development

Keep at it! They may really need your ideas; and we all need fusion reactors.
