Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio at the Fairmont Banff Hotel in Banff, Canada, five months before their wedding. August 19, 1953
Following Marilyn Monroe’s death, Joe DiMaggio was so devastated he held a private funeral barring all the Hollywood elite, delivered roses to her grave three times a week for over 20 years, never remarried, and his last words were “I’ll finally get to see Marilyn.”

4 year old Joseph Schleifstein, who survived the Holocaust by being kept hidden by his father
from Nazi officials inside Buchenwald concentration camp, is seen here shortly after his liberation in April, 1945
He was hidden by his father in a large sack, enabling him to avoid detection by SS guards when arriving at the camp. Other prisoners helped his father keep him hidden and Schleifstein survived until the Americans liberated the camp. After the war, Schleifstein and his parents emigrated to the United States. He did not discuss his wartime experiences for decades, even with his children. His case was discovered by chance in 1999, leading to a search for him and an eventual newspaper interview.

The Banff fairmont is one of the most beautiful hotels ever. Bucketlist that shit.

Did he hate the English? I read elsewhere a while back that he admired them and wanted the nation intact in his empire.

Global warming was in retaliation to the sinking of the Titanic. Take that you stupid iceberg!

Didn't even notice that iceberg but at least I wasn't the only one to miss it. That'd have been embarrassing

I can just imagine the conversation in #6. "They said rain, definitely rain; but it looks like it's brightening up Hitler" "Oh f**k off"
Hepina
"Whatcha thinking about?" "Dunno, just suicide stuff I guess."
MissTwist
On the Slave Retention Device Pic: There also appears to be a rigid bar on his left leg, keeping him from bending his knee to "run" away.
SummerGuineaPig
Didn't notice that at first glance. Damn :(
MissTwist
Also some interesting items at his feet :/

I get the distinct impression Bonnie and Clyde had lots of rowdy sex. The look on that dude's face...

I get that impression too! They look hot for each other.

At that point he was completely a vegetable. I very much doubt he had any thoughts at all in his final moments.

That slave retention one turned my stomach. Jesus
OSCgal
He's got a thing attached to his left leg, too. Like it's preventing him from bending his knee properly. Man alive...
GoneMadBrb
He still manages to maintain a dignified look, despite that contraption.
ChernoGamma
From what I've read, those collars were common on sugarcane plantations, so if they took off the collar would snag on sugarcane.
lostnortherner
Yeah I've seen pictures of ones where two slaves are joined together at the neck so they couldn't move independently, it's horrific stuff.
artsystuff
Every time someone tries to make the human race seem wonderful, I just point out slavery and get downvoted into oblivion. Worth it though.
Flyndaran
Few forms of slavery throughout history were anywhere near as bad as 1800s U.S. All are horrible, of course.
AtlasUnbound
I like to use "equal opportunity enslavers" for most old civilizations.
CitizenDickbag
I think that's a mischaracterization. While all slavery wasn't as bad as that, many times it was.
justherefortheshitposting
Most systems of slavery had provisions for the protection of slaves and/or paths by which slaves could gain citizenship. Not so in the U.S.

GANDHI KNEW ENGLISH, PEOPLE. That's why his letter is in English. Also, Hitler would have to understand what was written, so... English.

Rumo2me
Why is Gandhi's letter in English?
IOnceOwnedMoonMoonButOnceHeTriedToLickMyBallsAndRanAwayIMissHim
Why NOT English?
DeadyBearr
Because he didn't know German?
Spacebandit
India was a Britain colony at that time.
oldmachead
Gandhi was a lawyer in South Africa before he moved to India. Courts (India and South Africa) used English. English is widely used in India.
Flyndaran
His first draft was in Sumerian, but as no one knew that language then, he changed it.
Taxicat
Most of India speaks some variation of English. Not all the time, by they certainly learn it.
RandomMagus
Gandhi was educated in England, wasn't he?
Rediculocity
English is still the common tongue for most of India as most provinces speak their own language, so it makes it easier for trade and travel.
uwpuppies
He was a lawyer in South Africa for a bit and he is widely known for protesting against British imperialism in India so yes he knew English.
dizzyplaya
Because English was and is widely learned by Indians, he studied in London and worked in South Africa then protested against England.

itsakidsbooksantiago
They both deserved so much more happiness than this life doled out to them.
FilthyRedmond
How much older was he?
Flyndaran
Drug abuse wasn't doled out to them. Monroe had more than her share of mental illness though.
itsakidsbooksantiago
Drug abuse often has a self-medicating element in many cases. I dunno. I hate to judge either for it.
ThatsPermanent
Mute Lenin is the best Lenin.
samsonguy920
A lot of Russians would disagree. Lenin's illness and untimely death helped Stalin take charge. Stalin is just as guilty as Hitler in >
ThatsPermanent
You make a good argument. And Stalin was a jerk; he would have been better mute, too. I guess I think all politicians are better mute.
samsonguy920
Lenin was very vocal and very specific to his colleagues that Stalin should not be his successor. Of course, that was before he became >
samsonguy920
> a lot less vocal.
samsonguy920
> genocide.
SummerGuineaPig
I always thought Jerry Orbach and Joe DiMaggio looked alike.
TheKirkendall
He looks like the WWE guy to me. Vince McMahon:
SummerGuineaPig
Yeah, they could be 2nd cousins.
PlatonicPajamas
I totally read that as John Dimaggio and was super confused.
samsonguy920
Why must you do this?
Superchief86
Who is Jerry Orbach? I saw a street named after him when i visited new york. Never thought to look it up.
SpellboundFish
He was on Law & Order for years, also played the dad in Dirty Dancing. Had several other film roles.
SummerGuineaPig
He was also the voice of Lumiere (the candle) in Beauty and the Beast. I would have never guessed that was him.
SpellboundFish
Ah, I forgot that one!
Superchief86
Oh no kidding. I thought of law & order when i read the name. Thought i was mistaken.

Wouldn't have made a difference. The Romanovs had dug their graves long before Lenin started gaining power. If not Lenin, then definitely >

the look of a man who is watching what he built be taken over by a dictator
AliBarber
Funny cos he was a dictator
MerToo
Specifically it's the characteristic look of a person with significant brain injuries, which both Lenin (after strokes) and Charlie have.
MerToo
Charlie's intonation and nonsense words suggest that at the very least, he has suffered damage to Broca's area of the brain.
TurningTurningIntheWideningGyro
Broca's aphasia is the one where you understand, but can't produce grammatically correct language, right?
MerToo
Yeah, you get "word salad". Friend of mine fell not very far, hit his head, got occasional word salad among other symptoms. It was very sad.
lifeisapicnic
"Dear Friend" letter to Hitler from Gandhi. Wow, that's the biggest olive branch I've ever seen.

"Our words are backed with NUCLEAR WEAPONS!"
DMGuy
Ghandi was one of those guys who was a great man in many ways, and a big ol' asshole in others. History is rarely black and white.
HawasKaPujari
I don't think at that point in history it was well known what Hitler was actually doing. Everyone took him for another dictator.
sitemoth
Look at the historical context, both were fighting against Britain. In India as a German you often get greeted with "Heil Hitler"... (1)
sitemoth
... and it's hard to explain people that this is something bad. (2)

CubanDoctorRapist
gandhi was just another jackass
CryingDuringFinals
Why was Gandhi such a jackass? Seems to me that he was trying his best to prevent a world war.
CubanDoctorRapist
No, because he let his wife die for principle, but when he got sick he got treatment immediately. Hypocritical bullshitter
MerryJoe
This may be a dumb question, but why was it in English?
eggmuffin
Even if Hitler didn't know English, translating from English to German would be easier than from Gujarati. Gujarati might just be ignored.
InLumineTony
Pretty sure the answer is that world leaders always receive letters from all over the world that are translated by experts on their staff.
samsonguy920
It's a good branch language between Hindi and German, for one. Less likelihood of misconception.
samsonguy920
*Gujarati, too.
lifeisapicnic
Not a dumb question, I thought about that too. Perhaps because it was the only language they had in common?
sonicboom90187
Look up lingua franca. It's basically a non-native language someone chooses to speak to someone else who speaks another language—in this 1/2
sonicboom90187
case, English is their chosen lingua franca. Yay I contributed.
sonicboom90187
Someone else put it way better in this thread: "a language they had in common"
popejubal
The fact that English is the current Lingua Franca makes me laugh my ass off.

IOnceOwnedMoonMoonButOnceHeTriedToLickMyBallsAndRanAwayIMissHim
Yes because most of the Indians are illiterate and wild people who doesn't even know the English alphabet amiright?
Wodenifferous
Apparently it's legit. English has been the global lingua franca for a long time, so that's probably why.

Huh, good thing I'm not doing history at A level!
